The End of Ninette Sanatorium
By the late 1960s, tuberculosis (TB) treatment advances lessened the need for dedicated facilties like the Ninette Sanatorium. In 1965, the Province of Manitoba funded the transition of a pavilion into “Pembina House:” it provided education programs that promoted the integration of “social and academic upgrading,” and did not solely care for TB patients.
In 1972, Pembina House closed, and the Ninette Sanatorium followed. From 1973-2000, the Ninette Sanatorium facilities became Pelican Lake Training Centre, serving patients with special needs. In 2000, a Christian group used the grounds for retreats and conferences. At this time, the original Ninette Sanatorium grounds are privately owned.
