Klondyke photographs cover

Brown stock paper covering leather-bound photograph album donated by H.J. Goetzman

The leather-bound photograph album measures 29.21 x 38.1 cm (11.5 x 15 in.) Brown stock paper protects the album;  there are no illustrations on the cover and no date, publisher, or author.

The album features four large-format 34.29 x 26.67 cm (13.5 x 10.5 in.) and 24.13 x 19.69 cm (9.5 x 7.75 in.) photos, featuring just one per page. Pages are unnumbered and some of the images are cropped.

Photographs in the series "En route to the Klondike" document miners and mining towns, and transportation to the mines via railway, sternwheeler, and dog sled. Other photographs feature the Klondike, Yukon, Pelly Rivers; Lake Le Barge; White Horse and Five Finger Rapids; Five Finger Islands; Miles Canyon; and Chilkoot Pass.

Dawson city views feature many images of a growing Dawson City and its buildings including street scenes, celebrations, and sports. Goetzman's studios were based in Dawson City. A focal point to venture out by dog sled or sternwheelers to take views of Bennett, Gold Run, Forty Mile Town, and Bonanza Creek.

Donor inscription on verso of the title-leaf of the album

Inscription on verso reads "To E.E. Tiffin, With Compliments of the Photographer

Dawson Y.T - Aug. 2 -1902

A handwritten inscription is visible on the lower right of the inside cover of the photograph album: "to E.E. Tiffin With compliments the Photographer, 1902."

A personal album, such as this, was not unusual for the time. Goetzman more than likely knew E.E. Tiffin in 1902 and that this album was in fact a gift. The photo album also includes a photo of one of Dawson's hockey teams, including player E.E. Tiffin. Both Tiffin and Goetzmann were in Dawson in 1902.
