How to get an education despite the existing system".

re : The Li b r a ry .
1.The Library is a focal point of University Activity. It is both the resource
centre for all activity for most interested students. Now, our library is
not a great library, but for those of us who have chosen to study in the
Lakehead, it is the best we have -- it is all we have. As students we
must make an effort to share the resources available communally.
2.Remeber, the•re are many reasons for the existance of the present university,
but the single reason that we must hold before us at all times is that this
academic centre exists for the students, for the ones who want to avail
themse 1ves of the fas c i 1it i es. i.e., The needs of the students and community members should always be the prior concern of those who administrate.
3.From time to time we are forced with the necessity of having to remove
books from the library when the circulation desk is closed. This is
acceptable, but the books must be returned, when you are through with them
so that others may use them. Again our responsibility is to the other
students, not the rules of the library. Similarly with books on your carrel,
when you ~re no longer using them, a1 low them to be restacked. You can do
no wrong in the library as long as you are constantly aware of the needs
and privileges of other students.
4. If you work daily in the same carrel, don 1 t allow your carrel to be cleared.
We can 1 t al low the interuption of our studies just because rules and regulations
are being enforced.
5. If you do find your carrel cleared don't take your anger out on the library
workers. Complain to the chief librarian, A.M.S. V.P. of academics, the
Dean of Students, or the President or Vice-President of the University.
But do oppose the clearing of your carrel if you think you are making good
use of i 'l ·
6.Don't al~ the library to turn into a clinical laboratory -- many of the
best scholars and artists worked under very human conditions, i.e., the
crying of children or the playing of animals. Perhaps the presence of
other forms of life wi 11 help us keep a sense of balance when we are
dealing with concepts like Platonic forms or economic theory.
7. If you are disturbed by excessive noise, deal with the problem politely
and rationally. People aren't basically "evil" and they will respond
appropriately to your needs if you know how to ask and explain.
REMEMBER:

SCHOOLS ARE FOR STUDENTS NOT FOR SYSTEMS AND BUREAUCRACIES.

Dare to Struggle,
Dare to Win.
STUDENTS UNITE.
