In every field - arts, science and technology - this ever-increasing flood of literature is doubling every 22 years. Right in the thick of this 'information explosion' are the libraries which are having to put forth gigantic efforts in order to meet modern requirements in disseminating ideas and retrieving information. In our industrial society professional librarians cannot do this job alone. They need enthusiastic, intelligent and well-trained assistants to help them meet the challenge of this ever more pressing problem. Modern library service requires men and women who will help the librarian on the technical level. Whether they be called library assistants, technicians or technologists the demand for them is growing. Professional Librarians are trained on a post-baccalaureate level at graduate library schools. The preparation for Library Technologists consists of a post-High School, two-year curriculum program, comprising survey courses in general education as well as intensive training in the techniques and basic methods of library science.
