                    <text>History of Lakehead University
Lakehead University evolved from the Lakehead Technical Institute
(LTI), which was established in 1946. From LTI, Lakehead became
the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology in 1956. The
Lakehead University Act was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant
Governor of Ontario in 1965, and Lakehead University was
established. The first degrees granted by Lakehead University were
in Arts and Science in 1965. Now, only 40 years later, the University
has over 7,500 students, more than 37,000 alumni working around
the world, and a bright future. Lakehead University has grown into
a vibrant and dynamic institution and we will continue to build on
past strengths for the future!

Why Celebrate 40 years?
The mission of the Lakehead University 40th Anniversary Celebration
has been to celebrate Lakehead University's 40th Anniversary, and
the institution's history and development as a leader in higher
education in the City of Thunder Bay and surrounding region, and
to bring back a significant number of alumni and friends to take part
in this celebration.

The Alumni Association of Lakehead University
(AALU)
The Alumni Association of Lakehead University exists to provide
opportunities for links among alumni, the University and the
community, and to be an active partner in the direction, success
and prosperity of Lakehead University. The AALU is proud to have
supported the 40th Anniversary Celebrations throughout 2005. We
would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have
made this weekend such a success - without the support of fellow
alumni and friends, this weekend would not have been possible. For
more information about all the AALU's services and events, please
visit our website at www.lakeheadualumni.ca

A democratic republic since 1946, Italy (population 58 million) with
its famous boot-shaped peninsula and two large Mediterranean
islands (Sici y and Sardinia) is one of the world's most popular tourist
destinations. This year, its capital city Rome was again selected
(second year in row) as the best city in Europe by Travel 6t Leisure
travel magazine, with the city of Florence, voted second.

The Republic of the Ukraine (population 48 million) is mostly a land
of fertile plains (steppes) located in the southeast part of Central
Europe. It became an independent nation in ~ugust 199~ aft:r
the fall of the Soviet Union (which had occupied the Ukraine since
1922). Traditionally an agricultural area, the Ukraine is one of the
world's ma·n centres for sugar production. The capital city is Kiev

First Nations

The Republic of Finland (population 5 million) gained its
independence on December 6, 1917, after centuries of being a
grand duchy under Sweden and later, Russia. Located in northern
Europe, Finland borders the countries of Norway, Sweden and Russia
and has over 60,000 lakes in a land about the size of Montana. The
capital city is Helsinki.

According to the Canadian government, 4.4% of all Canadians have
Aboriginal ancestry. There are over 608 First Nations in Canada,
comprising 52 Nations or cultural groups (Cree, Mohawk, etc.) and
more than 50 languages. The provinces with the largest proportion
of Aboriginal people are Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Canada owes its name to the Huron-Iroquoian word kanata
meaning "village" or "settlement" and Ontario, to the Huron word
omtariio meaning "beautiful lake" .

Known as Siam until 1939, the Kingdom of Thailand (population
65 million) is a constitutional monarchy and the only country in
Southeast Asia that has never been taken over by European powers.
Thailand is slightly more than twice the size of Wyoming, has a
tropical climate and enjoyed a free-enterprise economy.
The capital city is Bangkok.

The Republic of India (population 1 billion) • slightly larger than
one-third the size of the United States - has been an independent
nation since August 15, 1947. Its diverse economy ranges from
traditional village farming to wide range of modern industries and
services. Geographically, India has a bit of everything: upland plain
in south; flat and rolling plain in Ganges; deserts in the west; and,
Himalayas in the north. The capital city is New Delhi .

Canada (population almost 39 million) is the second largest country
in the world with 9,984,670 square kilometres (Russia is first with
over 17,075,200 square kilometres). An independent country with
a parliamentary democracy since Confederation on July 1, 1867,
Canada's 1,408,800 kilometres of highways stretch from the Atlantic
to Pacific Oceans and north to the Arctic (only 497,306 kilometres
are paved). The capital city is Ottawa.

The Federal Republic of Germany (population over 82 million) is
Europe's largest economy (world's fffth) and most populous nation.
In 1945, after the Second World War, Germany was divided into
two countries until German unification in 1990. Located in Central
Europe and just smaller in size than Montana, Germany has the
Bavarian Alps in the south, the uplands in the centre and lowlands in
the north. The capital city is Berlin.

Lakehead

History
Many years ago Francis Clayton, BA 1993,
had a dream of starting a Sports Wall of Fame
to honour those that have made outstanding
contributions to Lakehead University
Athletics.

"

THUMDl:RWOLVl:S
In September of 1993 the Wall of Fame
Committee was struck. It consisted of Norm
Lavoie, Ron Lappage, Hank Akervall, Peter Dika, Steve Daniar,
Francis Clayton, Dan Bissonnette and Darlene Yakimoski. Their
mission was to deve1op the criteria for the wall which included
who could be eligible for nomination to the wall. It was decided
that each induction year there was a possibility of one builder, two
athletes and one team being included.
In June of 1996 the First Annual Lakehead University Sports Wall of
Fame Induction Dinner was held. It continued for five consecutive
years. It was then decided that the dinner would be held every
two years. Earlier today, the 2005 Inductees were honoured at an
induction ceremony in the lounge of the Hangar where the new
Wall of Fame is now located.
