As you will observe, we not only have expanded facilities, but also expanded student enrolment. Including those people registered in the Secondary School Teachers' course, some 1,700 students will be on campus this summer. . The summer program is designed, as much as possible, with the needs and interests of part-time students in mind. However, occasionally these can only be guessed at, and we hope they will be more clearly articulated either through representatives from the Summer Session Committee or by individual comments to me personally. I would like to meet with one special group of students those who will register in the winter off-campus program who are on campus this summer. MORRISON eThat one-storey, yellow brick house you may have passed on Oliver Road, next to the old Lakehead University entrance, isn't quite as sedate as it might appear on the outside. It houses the University's Day-Care Centre and is usually a home - away - from home for tens of boisterous children whose parents are University students. The services of the Centre are particularly aimed at mothers who wish to take classes during the day and who don't have anyone to look after their young offspring. It is open every day during the week from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and is under the supervision of Mrs. Theresa Jacobs. Children of any age are welcomed at the Centre and they are all treated to hot lunches and snacks each day. In addition, a separate rest room is set aside in the Centre for naps, if the parents of the children wish that they should have one. In between eating and sleeping, the youngsters can exercise their artistic talents in many ways, play games both indoors and outside the building or just do their own thing, under supervision by the DayCare staff. Their parents are charged a very modest monthly fee for this service. The Centre has been in operation for about three months now and most of the toys which were originally donated to it have had a fairly good workout since then. "We are desperately in need of new toys (second-hand will do) and play equipment," said Mrs. Jacobs, "and now that summer is here we would like to have a couple of inflatable swimming pools for the children." Anyone who would like to donate these materials or some of their time to the Centre may contact Mrs. Jacobs at the University, Extension 431. eThis edition of LU WEEK is dedicated to some of the various University services which will be available to summer session students this year. News of future University activities will be published in this news bulletin every other week during July and August. When he finally got his camera ready to shoot, these four moppet-heads appeared out of the woodwork and posed themselves for the above picture. .Our �Forll eAn information centre for counselling and reference services on birth control and venereal disease has been set up at Lakehead University by the Women's Liberation in co-operation with the Academics Department of the Alma Mater Society. The organizers of the centre felt that there was a need to establish a service of this kind because there is no family planning or birth control information centre for the public in Thunder Bay. Therefore, the purpose of this centre is to educate local citizens on these two vital subjects as well as provide a direct link between the public and medical advisors and other authorized areas of assistance. Books, pamphlets and other up-to-date information on birth control and venereal disease are available in the growing library of the centre which is located in Room 109 of the University Centre Building. Suggestions for new reading materials are welcomed. You are invited to drop by the centre for information or "just to rap." eA program in drug education will operate at Lakehead University this summer from July 1 until August 15 in conjunction with both the Free North Festiva1 (which anyone may attend free of charge) and the Drug Information Centre. The co-ordinators of the program stated that: "factual presentations about the use of drugs will be given by doctors, social workers, lawyers, sociologists, and others. The final decision concerning the use is left with the individual. It is hoped that he or she will be able to make a more intelligent, logical decision based on the socio-medical facts presented, rather than on rumor and imagination." "No instructor or resource person will encourage the illegal or thrill-seeking use of drugs," they continued, "hut he will not moralize against it either. Discussion groups will be conducted by young adults, most of whom have had some experience with drugs. All drug education programs are, at present, experiments. It is hoped that this experiment will prove a working basis for further programs of a similar nature. Under the expert guidance of Bert Sitch, Supervisor of Grounds, the department has been making many noticeable changes in the physical appearance of the campus. To make room for new parking lots, for example, they are presently transferring 5,000 square yards of turf from the area east of the library to other grounds west of the Centennial Building and south of the shopping mall. In addition, hundreds of new bedding plants and shrubs are being planted on the campus this year. This includes 150 deciduous shrubs (12 varieties, plus 8 varieties of roses); 118 coniferous shrubs (9 varieties); and 6,600 annual bedding plants (15 different varieties in various colors and shades.) Mr. Sitch and his crew are now charged with the demanding chore of maintaining the 24 acres of lawn and gardens within the three-quarter mile-long campus area lying between the golf course and the Faculty of Education Building. Another 19 acres of land should also he under maintenance in September. "The Grounds Department appreciates the efforts of all who use the campus, in keeping our grounds neat and clean," commented Mr. Sitch and he continued," real attractivegrounds take time, and beauty is something that comes only with maturity." eThe first bus arrives at the University at 7:55 a.m. each day and every half-hour thereafter. Gym facilities in the building will he available from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and also 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Everyone is welcome to stop in and shape up, or down, whatever the case maybe. If you want to set up your own physical fitness program or have one of the Athletic Department experts prescribe one especially for you, there are various pieces of equipment which will he at your disposal. Perhaps a few games of badminton, tennis or volleyball is all you need to keep in shape. Or you may want to tackle a daily 15-minute workoufi on "The Gladiator" a sturdy structure of stainless steel which can hold more than a dozen people at one time. If you only want to jog a bit between classes, you're welcome to drop into the Athletic Building any time during the week. Gym clothes will he , supplied. . .the rest is up to you. In case you only enjoy spectator sports. . . as a spectator. . the University's fastball team plays two and three times a week at St. Martin's Diamond in Thunder Bay, North. And there is usually a game or two underway on the tennis courts next to the women's residence buildings or the squash courts in the main building if you'd care to idle a way a few precious summer moments in quiet observation. More than 350 people attended the 16th Annual Meeting of the Institute on Lake Superior Geology Conference. "We had only prepared for about 250 delegates," said conference co - ordinator Dr. J. Talbot, Associate Professor of Geology. "This was a record attendance for the Institute and it reflects an intense interest in the geology of Northwestern Ontario," continued Dr. Talbot. "Participants arrived from as far afield as South Africa and Australia, although most registrants were from the United States. The prime interest in this conference centred around a symposium on the volcanic belts of Ontario which are now recognized as having great mineral potential. The recent discovery of a large copper-zinc deposit at Sturgeon Lake, north of Ignace, certainly contributed to the unexpectedly large attendance. Four field trips were offered - the one to the nearest volcanic belt had to be repeated four times to include all those wishing to attend." Attendance at the Canadian Library Association's workshop was "beyond all expectations," commented Dan Sudar, Chairman of the School of Library Technology. "The workshop was entitled 'The Library Technician at Work'," added Mr. Sudar, "and the main reason for having it at Lakehead was because we have the only two-year program in Canada for training library technicians at the University level. We also have a most important facility - a library containing more than 100,000 volumes - in which to conduct a course of this nature." Conferences on a variety of other subjects - from law to youth theatre to medicinewill have attracted an estimated 2,300 people to Lakehead University during a four-month period from May until September. While some two dozen conferences are held here during the year, the majority are during the interim periods befor and after summer session when the university service centres can cater to conferences; whether that service is planning meals for up to 300 people, setting up sound equipment or making "wake-up calls" for delegates who stay in residence. The University has many assets which make it an ideal location for conferences: large numbers of delegates can be accommodated at one time with sleeping and dining facilities, meeting rooms, laboratories and lecture theatres all within easy walking distance of each other; it is centrally located in Canada; and the services and facilities of Thunder Bay are readily accessible. George Lawrance, Director of Services commented that the university cannot live in a vaccuum. He said we receive support from tax dollars, paid directly or indirectly by delegates to conferences. We must be responsive to the needs of the public and offer our facilities to interested groups. "There are other indirect advantages," Lawrance said. "Every conference delegate from outside the Thunder Bay area will undoubtedly mention his visit to Lakehead to friends or associates and therefore create goodwill for both the University and the city." DIRECTOR RESIGNS eMr. George H. Schmidt, Dir• ector of Information Services, has resigned his position at Lakehead Universitj·. Mr. Schmidt will be returning to his home in Washburn, Wisconsin, to devote his attention to business interests there. Mr. Bryan Mason, Research Assistant to the President, will serve temporarily as Information Officer. WHITTLE RECEIVES CANADA COUNCIL GRANT eDr. John Whittle, Associate Professor of German, has been awarded a $3,250 Canada Council grant to conduct research in Europe on his book "Italy and The German Baroque" which is currently in progress. Much of his research will be done at the Austrian State Library in Vienna and various other countries in Germany. He left for Germany on May 12 and will be there for most of the summer months. OPEN HOUSE MAY 22 eThe public is invited to attend an open house in Lakehead University's Centennial Science Building on Friday, May 22, from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. All science research laboratories will be open for viewing in addition to demonstrations of research equipment. STUDENTS TO STUDY IN GERMANY eSummer studies m Germany will begin this month for two Lakehead University students. Part - time Arts student, Kathleen Kuz is enrolled in a course on German language and literature at the University of Kiel in the north of Germany. Second year Art student, Susan Cambell, will be engaged in similar studies in a course conducted by the Goethe Institute of Stauffen (Breisgaul). Both girls have been awarded scholarships to aid them in their studies. The trips are made possible through close cooperation between the university, the Canadian German Academic Exchange Association, and the West German Government through its Embassy in Ottawa. Two other students, Ines Krainer-Berday and Marlene Doerflinger have been given assisted flights by the Canadian German Association to live and work in Germany this summE>r to learn t.he language however, they will not be foJ. lowing a required course of study. �UNIVERSITY TO eA new approach to the obtain• ing of the M.A. degree - two year programs in either Psychology or Economics • will be inaugurated by the Faculty of Arts at Lakehead University this fall. Dean of Arts, Tim Ryan, commented that: "the empha• sis will now be placed on ob• taining the Master of Arts degree and not simply on receiving the Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree, which has limited career possibilities. Moreover there are now two options within each Masters program • in Psychology, for example, the student may opt for either Clinical or Experiental Psychology, while in Economics the student may select either a thesis or a non• thesis route to the M.A. degree." Each program, which may be considered as a five year dual• degree program, will have two stages. Stage one will extend over three years leading to the B.A. degree, and is essentially general education, although it does provide for concentration in the major discipline of either Psychology or Economics. The objective in this primary stage is exposure to the intellectual heritage of the student's society and a demonstration of the relevance of his studies to reality and to life. The second stage covers the next two years, and involves the completion of the course work and dissertation if required lead• ing to the M.A. degree. This stage has, as its essential objective, professional education and it gives specialist training in contrast to the broadly based general education of stage one. Stage two prepares the student, through a broad and intensive study of a given field, for a career in his area of concentration. Vol. 2, ~35 _ May 15, I 970 ()j~W' 'Nit; M.A. PROGRAM The M.A. students enrolled in the Psychology program will have a choice of two options. Clinical or Experimental Psychology. The first three years (stage one) of the programs lead to a major in Psychology and the degree of B.A.; in the next two years (stage two) the student selects one of the two options and proceeds on to the M.A. degree. The M.A. program in Economics also presents two options following stage one, i.e. the initial B.A. degree: the thesis option which consists of eight courses at the fourth or fifth year levels and a thesis, or the non-thesis option which consists of ten courses at the fourth or fifth year levels and both a written and an oral com• prehensive examination near the end of the student's program. The new programs were developed during the 1969-70 academic year by Dr. W. T. Melnyk, Chairman of the Department of Psychology, and Dr. K. J. Charles, Chairman of the Department of Economics, with the encouragement of Dean Rvan. They were discussed initially at the department level, then by the Faculty and, finally, ratified by the University Senate at a recent meeting. QUESTION: What was your general recommendation? DEAN RY AN: That the fourth and fifth years be organized as a program of specialization which would give a level of competence at the end of the five year period sufficient for professional employment, and so place our students at Lakehead University in a better economic position in a highly competitive market, and moreover that we present alternative methods of obtaining the Masters degree, so that each student would have a better opportunity to complete his degree. QUESTION: How many students do you estimate will be involved in the new M.A. programs? DEAN RYAN: My estimate would be 50 to 60 students, at least; probably this would be an underestimate for the initial interest has been considerable. QUESTION: Will an Honors B.A. student graduating this year be able to transfer into the second year of the M.A. program? DEANRYAN:Yes QUESTION: How long will it be before Lakehead University has similar M.A. programs in all disciplines in the Faculty of Arts? DEAN RYAN: This will be a matter for each deoartment to decide for itself. Some departments may wish to follow this pattern immediately; others may not wish to follow it at any time. It will most certainly be a matter for each department to decide independently. QUESTION: You recommended tha t specialization in the final two years of the program would qualify the student for professional employment. Does this mean that Honors B.A. students in the past were unsuccessful in obtaining employment without additional training in these two fields (Psychology and Ee· onomics)? DEAN RYAN: At the moment, Honors B.A. students are at a disadvantage in their career expectations when competing with those holding a Master's degree, and it is our wish in this program to emphasize the necessity for the Master's degree, and to provide alternative routes to the degree and so give our students an opportunity to compete more effectively in an ever tightening market. The former route towards the Honors degree will, of course, be available for those who wish to take advantage of it, but certainly, the emphasis will be placed on the completion of a Master's degree. His Excellency Georl,(c fgnaticff • The Convocation Address at Lakehead University's graduation exercises on May 30 will be delivered by the distinguished Canadian, His Excellency George Jg. natieff. His Excellency has served the Canada Department of External Affairs in a variety of positions and locations for many years. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, the son of the late Count Paul Jgnatieff and Princess Natalie Mestchersky, he is one of four brothers all of whom have made careers in public life in Canada. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Toronto, and went to Oxford as a Rhodes Schollar in 1938 where he received his M.A. degree. He later attended the University of London. After serving in the British Army, he joined the Department of External Affairs in Ottawa in 1940 and served abroad in London and Washington, and with the Canadian Permanent Delegation to the United Nations. He attended the Imperial Defense College in London in 1953 and was appointed Ambassador to Yugoslavia in 1957. In 1959 he became Deputy High Commissioner in London and, on his return to Can• ada in 1960, assumed the position of Assistant Under•Secretary in the Department of External Affairs. Mr. lgnatieff was named Am• bassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the North Atlantic Council, Paris, in 1962. In March 1966 he became Ambassador and Permanent Represen• tative of Canada to the Unitro Nations. In 1968 he assumed his present position as Permanent Representative of the Canadian Delegation to the Disarmament Conference in Geneva. The four young people, Charles Sharun, Barbara Wil­ liams, Clint Kuschak and Peter Lenardon are all executive mem­ bers of the Aesthetics Society of Lakehead University. Their "Free North Festival" project is to organize an Art School at'. the University this summer from July 6 until August 21 to establish "person . to • person communications of creative ideas and art expression at a com­ munity level . . ." The Art School will involve workshops in music, literature, drama, and art which includeia; painting, sculpturing,photography, printmaking, etc. The instructors will include semi • professional artists, especially young people since the Aesthetics group feel that they "will be able to pro-• mote the relaxed atmosphere con­ ducive to the development of an understanding of creative works among the participants and the community." In addition, visiting person­ nel of the various communica­ tion fields will meet the stu­ dents so as to present as broad a community outlook as pos­ sible. The project will also include a feedback between it (i.e., student expression) and the community opinion. A van displaying the project's work will visit central locations in the city preceded by advertise­ ments to make the visits known to the community. Additional student • community dialogue will consist of interviews on local television, talk • back programs and open houses dur­ ing the complete length of the project. The majority of participants will be high school students. They will be made aware of the summer program within the next two weeks by the four artists who will conduct tours of all local high schools with an audio • visual presenta­ tion outlining the exciting pro­ jects which will be available to the young people during July and August. Financial assistance from the Ontario Council of the Arts is still in the final negotiation stages and the outcome will be announced in early June. How­ ever, a partial grant for pre­ paratory organizing amounting to $2,000 has already been awarded. "The important factor is to secure community involvement," commented Charles Sharun. "By involving the Parks Board, var­ ious Arts Councils and organ­ izations, we are assessing this participation in order to qualify for the major part of the grant." The idea for a feedback sum­ mer program in Thunder Bay was first discussed at a meet­ ing in June 1969 after the suc­ cessful group exhibition of "Pul­ sation 1" by the Aesthetic peo­ ple. In September 1969, the Society began the operation of establishing a painting and drawing workshop on campus as well as a pottery workshop. In addition, the Society, under the auspices of the Alma Mater Society and the Administration of Lakehead University, esta­ blished a Gallery in the former faculty lounge of the University. A series of student, local and imported exhibits were held during the remainder of the academic year. Meeting with various university officials the co-ordina­ tors received enthusiastic encour­ agement and unconfirmed state­ ments of support. After the ratification of sup­ port by the Ontario Council in­ clusive of partial financial as­ sistance, the Arts Faculty of Lakehead University pledged financial assistance as well as the use of selected university facilities which had already been confirmed by the Admin­ istration. In addition to this, the Thunder Bay Parks Board has pledged unconfirmed financial assistance to the project. The Aesthetics group is concerned about the teenagers of Thunder Bay. Instead of grow­ ing into local citizens during their high school years, they grow in idled energy toward an alienated desire to flee. (Mathematics) student. This medal is awarded to the highest ranking student in the graduating class of the Honors degree and it is presented to the winning student by President Tamblyn at the Convocation Exercises. The Lieutenant Governor's Medal for the highest ranking graduating student of the third year of the Bachelor's degree will be awarded to Linda Joyce Rintamaki, B.Sc. (Biology). Clifford F. Strachan, B.A. (Economics) will be awarded the Chancellor's Medal for the highest ranking student (part-time) in the graduating class of the Bachelors' or Honors Bachelors' degree. The Arts Medal, for the highest ranking graduating student in the Faculty of Arts will be presented to Michael S. Sidorski, Honors B.A. (French). Wilkie, B.A. A YEAR OF MANY FIRSTS eThis year's convocation exercises will mark a number of firsts for the University. The first Masters degrees will be granted by the Faculty of Science and the first students will be graduated from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, the Faculty of Education and the Business Computer Systems programs. A total of 287 students will receive General Bachelor of Arts degrees. Of these, 39 will be awarded Honors B.A. degrees and four students will receive M.A. degrees. Firsf,'dass standings were attained.. by 38 Arts students this year. In 1969 1 a total of 217 Arts students were awarded degrees. The Faculty of : 'Science will graduate 69 students this year including six with M.Sc. degrees and 15 with Honors B.Sc. degrees. A total of 20 Science graduates received first class standings. The Lakehead Teachers College was amalgama,ted with the University on May 26, 1969 to form the Faculty of Education. The first graduates ' of the new faculty will be awarded their Interim Elementary - School Certificates in addition to a Diploma in Education from the University and the Department of Education. First class standings were obtained by 10 of the 152 students in the Faculty of Education graduating class. Degrees and Diplomas will be awarded to 179 students frorri the University Schools. This total includes 50 from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, eight from the graduate diploma and 32 from the diploma in ~usiness Administration; six from Engineering Technology; 38 from Forest Technology; nine from Forest Research; and 16 from Library Technology. The new three - year program in Business Computer Systems was instituted by the University Schools in September, 1967. A total of 20 students will be graduated from the program on May 30. AUCC MEETING eThe Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada will convene a conference on Canadian university planning May 24-27, at Lakehead University. • Chairman for the conference is Roger Gaudry, president oftheAUCC. A welcoming reception for the 200 delegates to the conference will be held on the evening of May 24 . The opening address will be made May 25 by W. M. Sibley of the University of Manitoba and the rest of that day will be devoted to panel sessions. Engholm has been invited to attend a one-day Conference at Carleton University on 23rd May which will include members from the Ministry of External Affairs to discuss Canada's foreign policy attitude towards the Republic of South Africa. Dr. Engholm will also be presenting a paper on Policy and Representation in Tropical Africa to the American Political Science Association's Annual Science Association's Annual Conference to be held at Los Angeles in September. eAt its April meeting, the Committee of Presidents received a report on the survey of citizenship of graduate students for 1969-70 from the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies (OCGS). A similar study had been done last year; the report for 1969-70 included statistics for 1968-69, making it possible to observe changes. Total graduate enrolment in 1969-70 increased by approximately 2,500 students, or 17'Yl, to 17,500 students, of whom 12,100 (69%) were full-time; the numbers of full-time students increased by 14% while part-time students increased by 25% The foreign-student component declined in 1969-70 from 20% to 14%, while landed immigrants increased from 13% to 17%, and Canadians increased from 66% to 69'Yc,. Together, Canadians and landed immigrants accounted for 86% of the total graduate-stu• dent population in 1969-70. BARCLAY eThe Donner Canadian Foundation has awarded a $3,000 grant to Dr. P. Barclay, Assistant Professor of Biology at Lakehead University, to support his studies of blueberry and wild rice crops as potential sources of income for non-reservation Indians in the area north of Lake Nipigon. " Blueberries will be studied using known management techniques to attempt to increase and stabilize yields in order to make this crop a more reliable and greater source of income," commented Dr. Barclay. He added: " the study of wild rice will be made from the point of view of establishing commercial paddy production and also improving wildlife habitats. A search will be made for suitable wild rice areas this summer. Again the purpose is to provide a reliable source of income for the people of the area." eL.U. The Centre is under the directorship of Ken Boshcoff, an Arts Student, and is being run as an extension of the Academics program of the Alma Mater Society. For the summer months, research papers will be done, info.c mation on all aspects of the drug scene accumulated and counselling on personal matters will be avail• able. The Centre is situated in the office across from the University Centre Theatre, which formerly housed the Winter Carnival committee. "This service has as its basic aims-education and communication ," commented Mr. Boshcof( "believing that much of the publi city given to the non-medical use of drugs has been based on ignor ance and isolation leading to a tremendous over-reaction by adults in general and parents in particular." Mr. Boshcoff has spoken to parents, teachers and professionals in their various organizations and he has also delivered a report to the Le Dain Commission concerning local aspects of drug abuse. In addition to several conferences and courses on drugs, he has an in-depth knowledge of the drug culture. For those in need of counselling beyond this primary level, referrals to various professionals will be given upon request. Loubat, Assistant Pro• fessor, has been invited, as Visiting Professor, to give a series of lectures on the geology of Canada at the Institut de Mineralogie de l'Universite, University of Geneva, Switzerland. While in Geneva he will conduct a series of field excursions in theAlpine Mountains. Dr. J. Franklin, Assistant Professor, is spending two months in Europe and Britain visiting various famous mining localities with two purposes in mind. By discussing, with local geological experts, the condi~ tions of formation of these mineral deposits he will greatly enlarge his knowledge of his subject; but also, he will be seeking analogies with the mineral deposits of northwestern Ontario and thus furthering his researches into the local metallogeny. Dr. J . Talbot, Associate Professor, will be travelling to Missoula, Montana; unfortunately for the Department he will not be returning in the fall since he is taking up his appointment as Chairman of the Department of Geology in the University of Montana. "During the past year, data has been collected concerning the academic preferences of the students which will better able them to choose their courses with a greater than average possibility of success," the Dean explained. This information will be invaluable to incoming students as the norms are the most up-to-date and pertain exclusively to courses and programs at Lakehead University. By comparing his interests with those of graduating students, a new student can discover which subjects attract students with the same interests as his own. With this information, the student is better able to choose his courses and major area of study. The norms have been developed by Mr. Tosh Hayashi, M.A. (Lakehead); working under the direction of Dr. W. T. Melnyk, Chairman of the University's Department of Psychology. SHAKESPEARE SEMINAR AND THEATRE SPECl·ALISTS W. Pendergrast C. Pendergrast eAre you hung-up on Hamlet, mad about Macbeth or keen on King Lear? Well, you'll find all these characters alive and well at Lakehead University's Shakespeare Seminar and Theatre Workshop this summer. This will be the sixth summer for this special course which is co-ordinated by Dr. George Merrill, the University's Shakespeare specialist. It is designed to combine an academic study of Shakespeare, his time, his plays and his theatre with practical experience in acting, speech, technical theatre and a period study of Elizabethan life styles. This year there will be an additional laboratory course which will involve the rehearsal and preparation of a presentation of W. Shakespeare G.Merrill Shakespeare scenes. Plans for an Elizabethan "Midsummer Festival" are in progress. In addition, the Summer · School will show a limited series of Shakespeare films from many lands. It is expected that the regular theatre trip and tour of the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis will take place in July to see this year's production of "The Tempest." Dr. Merrill expects an enrolment of 40 students in the course which he will direct in co-operation with Mr. and Mrs. William Pendergrast of the faculty of the National Theatre School of Canada. They will be assisted by Mr. a11d Mrs. Bartley Bard who are graduates of the National Theatre School. The Kudder Preference Record, is used by Mr. Hayashi to measure ten broad areas of the students' academic interests and it takes approximately thirty minutes to complete. (The Record will be available to incoming students at the times indicated below). Because of the potential usefulness of this type of information, each student will be offering invaluable service to others coming into the university in later years. Because of the time required to score and interpret the form, each student is encouraged to come to the University at least two days prior to his appointment with his advisor so as to undertake the record. At the time of counselling, an interpretation should then be available. Each student is free to come at any time within the times indicated below. The counselling sessions will all be held in the Upper Theatre (Rm. 135) in the Agora. Parking lot #2 will be closed as of Monday, June 22 in order that construction on a wilding for the Regional School of Nursing may begin in that area. Parking lot #3 next to the Centennial Building will be closed temporarily during July while it undergoes expansion. It will accommodate 250 cars when completed. A new 450-car parking lot will be made between the University and the Faculty of Education building. It will be ready for operation in September when the students return for the 1970-71 academic year. But where will you be able to p:trk this summer? Director of Planning and Physical Plant, Claud Smith said: "there will be ample parking in the lot east of the Ii brary to replace that space lost by construction on the nursing building." And if you still can't find a place to park your car this summer, maybe it would be better to leave it at home and take the bus. The lots marked #4 (Student Parking) will be open to car owners .who normally parked in the #2lot. ePLEASE FREE NORTH FESTIVAL PROJECT AWARDED SECOND GRANT $8,000 grant from the Province of Ontario Council for the Arts (POCA) has been given to the Free North Festival project which will be held at Lakehead University this summer from July 6 until August 21. The Festival also received a $2,000 grant from the Council in May to cover initial operating expenses. Lakehead University, a co-sponsor in this ambitious project to inspire the arts in Northwestern Ontario, has loaned facilities valued at $7,800 to the Festival and the University's Faculty of Arts has donated $735 to it. Four hard working young artists of Thunder Bay: Charles Sharun, Peter Lenardon, Clint Kushak and Barbara Williams the co-ordinators of this prO: gram have brought together more than thirty resource people to assist with the Festival. Their project consists of open ~orkshops in drawing, paintmg, sculpture, film making, print making, drama, music, photography, pottery, literature, crafts and ceramics and it will benefit the entire community of Thunder Bay since everyone is invited to come out to the university to either eAn watch or work in the studios. There will be no admission charge and supplies will be available for those wishing to participate. Although the Festival is open to the general public, emphasis is being placed on the great number of students who will be unemployed this summer and would otherwise have very little todo. The Free North Festival expects to draw out local talent as well as attract outside entertainers so that concerts plays and film festivals will be staged throughout the summer. The exhibit has come from the collection of the Extension Department of the Art Gallery of Ontario and is sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and the Aesthetics Society at Lakehead University. Picasso is widely recognized as the most significant of modem artists. This exhibia tion shows Picasso in all stages of his life and work from the 'Art Nouveau' elegance and tragic sorrow of 'The Old Guitarist' through the Blue and Rose periods to the invention of Cubism in 'Les Demoiselles d' Avignon', in the most crucial picture of the modem period. The exhibition explores the changes Cubism underwent; 'Synthetic' cubism appears in the 'Three Musicians', the happiest picture of 'le jazz hot' ever devised, and at last, Picasso's expressive distortions as m 'La Femme qui Pleure'. Perhaps no other artist has expressed with more passionate conviction the horror and futility of war than Picasso in his 'Guemica', seen in this exhibition Included on some of the panels are relevant texts, many drawn from Picasso's own writings. SUMMER OF ART, POP CONCERTS, PLANNED FOR FREE* NORTH FESTIVAL ein case you're wondering what that red and green and white and yellow and blue and orange thing was that passed you, here's the first clue: it belongs to the co-ordinators of the FREE NORTH FESTIVAL. Surely, you've heard of that. The Festival begins on Monday, July 6 and will include eight weeks of workshops in all types of art from painting and pottery to photography and drama. The FREE NORTH FESTIVAL was organized by four ambitious young university students, shown in the photograph (right). They are: Charles Sharun (left); Barb Williams (centre); Clint Kushak; and Peter Lenardan (right). Included in the picture is Kathy McGovern who has been looking after some of the reams of paper work involved in organizing a program of this size. Mr. McEwan, Director of the University Computer Centre, and Mr. Watson, Assistant Director, Academic Services, were recently invited to participate in a conference on System Applications, Implementations anct .l!.;xtensions of A.P.L., the relatively new computer language whose use is fast expanding in universities, business and engineering, at Goddard Space Flight Centre, Maryland. Mr. Watson presented their joint paper on suggested changes to improve the consistency of the language. �·--•tGf JUse Olly FACULTY OF SCIENCE TO OFFER COURSE FOR ARTS STUDENTS eA new physics course desi~ned specifically for nonscience students will be offered at Lakehead University this fall. ,, The course is entitled Contemporary Physical Thought" and it will be available as an option to Arts students in any year without prerequisites. Dr. Hastings, one of the innovators of the new course, commented on the reasons for developing a physics course of this type: "Students today place more emphasis on social thought than ever before. They believe it relevant to study about man and his role in society and they tend to shy away from science which they consider too technical and rigid. Our modern problems, such as pollution and increasing technocracy, have a more direct influence on society now than ever before." he said. "To understand and cope with these modern living conditions, students should be exposed to some scientific fact and thought. A sociology major, for example, would be better equipped to understand the reasons for the varying degrees of success of the world's many cultures if he studied the scientific influence on them." When asked why the course was being introduced now, Dr. Hastings responded: "The recent decreases in science enrolments have prompted many of us to reexamine our role within the university. This new course is a direct result of such a re-examination. Its purpose is to present physics in a manner which is not highly technical or mathematical but which brings out the essential beauty and ideas of the subject. It has not been designed to train scientists, but to give non - scientists an idea of what the physicist is up to these days." The course will be primarily concerned with recent ideas and discoveries in Physics. Chairman of the Physics Department, Dr. V. V. Paranjape . commented, "Science programs of this type are now being offered at several Canadian Universities and are proving to be extremely popular with the Arts students." The exhibition contains 55 reproductions and is sponsored by the Arts Faculty and Aesthetics Society. Hallman B.A. (McMaster), M.A. (Waterloo) who is coming to the Lakehead from Brock. In addition, Mr. Stephen Martin B.A. (Manchester), M.A. (S. Illinois) has been appointed to the faculty. He will be concerned mainly with the presentation of off-campus geography courses under the Extension program. eMr. Claude E. Garton, curator of the Claude E. Garton Herbarium at Lakehead University recently announced that the nu~ber of plant sheets constituting the collection now exceeds 21,000. The collection is composed mainly of boreal plants 'but includes many temperate ;species as well. Specimens are .exchanged regularly with otl?,er institutions in North Amenca and Europe. Recently a total of ,3 084 exchange plants were sent tt>: University of Helsinki; Plant Research Institute, Canada Department of Agriculture; Univeri sity of Michigan; National Mus1 eum Ottawa· University of Sherbroo'ke; and Academy of Sciences, Leningrad. Plants from regions around Lake Superior and Thunder Bay are constantly being added to the collection as a result of a collecting program. These are carefully curated and their . localities and dates of collect10ns are recorded. eL.U. Parker and Mr. Bryan Mason to new positions, effective July 1, 1970. Mr. Parker has assumed the newly-created position of Chief, Academic Services, in which he will be responsible for planning and coordination in the areas of admissions and records, computer center, instructional aids, Vpersonnel and general services. f\ Mr. Mason has assumed Mr. Parker's former position of Executive Assistant to the President. The busiest studio has proved to be Stoneware and Pottery, headed by Jerry Ashby and located in the basement of "B" House, Men's Residence. The Drama group, headed by Frank Serio from Toronto, is very popular with its study . of 'life theatre' and the Comedia de l' Arte created and enacted daily by the participants. The Sculpture studio, headed by Peter Lenardon, is ~rogressing through a profus10n of dust, salt, stones, and plaster to many interesting, creativeartforms. The painting and drawing studio is presenting lectures on Colour, Theory and Composition. Hours and arrangements for special topics can be arranged through the instructors, Steve Elkerton and Mike LaBelle. The Craft Studio, in the charge of Sharlene Ticknor, 1?,as finished its Macrome sess10n and begins tye dye on Monday, July 20. The Print Studio is presently working on Silk-screen techniques with several participants in_volved _with orga~izing and 1llustratmg an ammated cartoon series. Free film features' •are presented twice each we~k day in Room 1029, Mam Building, at 2 and 8 .p.m. A schedule is posted on the main bulletin board, now locat. ed in the Great Hall. · The music workshop, headed by Bill Gabourie from Peterborough is established and offers ~lementary guitar lessons, organ and piano theory, composition and arrangement theory as well as the opp?r.tunity for advanced musicians to 'jam' with each other. Arrangements c~n be ma~e t~r?ugh Bill Gaboune for md1V1dual lessons and 'group' sessions. The co-ordinators are looking forward as more and more people come in every day, both to look and to participate. Parents are invited to attend the same classes as their children. The Commission held its initial meeting on July 13, 1970 and among its first actions wasl the election of Bill Hanley (Associate Professor, School of Business Administration) to the position of Chairman. Members of CUGO also agreed that the services of a full-time secretary/researcher were required. The position would ideally suit a graduate student who is looking for a year of practical research and writing. Anyone with a knowledge of the philosophy and literature of higher education and of university governmental structures, who may be interested in such a challenge, is invited to contact the Chairman for further information. CUGO will invite organizations and individuals, both from inside and from outside the University community, to submit written briefs. Although procedures have not yet been finalized, the Commission will be holding hearings to discuss these briefs. In the course of the study members of the Commission will also examine the governmental structures of other universities and colleges. Professor Hanley expressed his optimism concerning the final outcome of the Commission's deliberations, but noted that similar experiences at other institutions show that the process of self-examination is usually long, arduous, and occasionally W. HANLEY painful. eA group disguised as the 'Non-Such Players' will stage excerpts from four Shakespearean plays in the University Centre Theatre on Aug. 4, 5 and 6. In real life, the actors are all members of the summer Shakespeare Seminar and Theatre Workl:ihop. They have built a "stage within a stage" to recreate an old Shakespearean Theatre atmosphere. Their productions will include two pieces from Richard Ill, an excerpt from Twelfth Night, the witches' scene from Macbeth and an extremely humorous portion of A Midsummer Night's Dream. No admission fee will be charged. • As its June 19 meeting, The Committee of Presidents of Universities of Ontario elected the following officers for the period July 1, 1970 to June 30, 1972. She will also continue her studies m French and Russian at the University of Poi tiers. eLakehead University's Coc,m1ss10n on University Governmental Organization (CUGO) has been formed to begin the difficult task of examining the existing governmental structure and interrelationships. The goal of the Commission is to produce a report on its findings which will also contain recommendations concerning ways and means of improving the organization in order to best serve the interests of the University as a whole. CUGO was originally established on the recommendation of Senate at its November 29, 1969 meeting, though its terms of reference and membership were not approved until May of this year.
