Watson attended a recent Users' Conference in Birmingham, New York to discuss the new computer language (A.P.L.) which is widely used in the United States. It is used as a teaching aid by physicists, chemists, biologists, psychologists, philosophers, engineers and {'0mputer scientists. The Department of Mathematics pioneered its use at Lakehead University in 1968 and Lakehead became one of the first universities in Canada to use it. Beginning in September, the Department of Mathematics wi 11 use A.P .L. extensively in the first year 1a8 course. Enthusiasm was great for the A.P.L. as a simple mathematical language at the Users' Conference. Fleming Board Of Governors Chairman OJohn Murray Fleming, a member of Lakehead • University's Board of Governors for seven years, was recently ai:>pointed Chairman of the Board. ,... Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Mr. !"leming received his public and high school education in that city and graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1921 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Structural Engineering. In 1922, after a year of study toward a Master of Science degree, he joined the Manitoba Power Company. In 1924, Mr. Fleming joined the C. D. Howe Company of Port Arthur as a structural designer of grain elevators. He was made a partner and chief engineer of the company in 1933. Si nee 1936 he has served as General Manager and company president and currently is J. MURRAY FLEMING Chairman of the Board. Despite the demands of company responsibilities, Mr. Fleming found time of the Engineering Institute of Canada to be Chairman of-the Lal<ehead Branch and to serve on various institute com- WEEKLY EVENTS mittees. In 1963 he was one nf four outstanding engineers elected to Fellowships in the Engineering Institute of Canada, a distinction bestowed only on members who have high achievements to their credit within the institute. Mr. Fleming has served as senior advisory member of the Port Arthur Town Planning Commission, as a director of the Community Chest and as a member of the Northern Development Committee of the Ontario Economic Council. He is past president of the Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce. After his appointment to the Lakehead University Board of Governors in 1962, Mr. Fleming became Chairman of the National Corporations Division of the Lakehead University Development Fund. This division was responsible for raising over $1,600,000 in the 1967 campaign. He was appointed second vice-chairman of the Board in JL1ne of 1967 and first vice-chairman in 1968.' DR. J. H. Widdop as Professor and Chairman of the university's new- School of Physical and Health Education. Born in Halifax, England, Dr. Widdop obtained a Teacher's Certificate at Leeds Training College in 1949 and the following year received his specialist diploma from the Carnegie College of Physical Education. In 1957 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from London University and "in 1963 obtained a M.A. degree in education from McGill University. He received his Ph,D. in Physical Education and Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin in 1967. Dr. Widdop's teaching and supervisory experience includes eight years in Halifax, England and two years in Montreal schools. He has been on the staff of the Faculty of Education at McGill University for eight years. In addition to his Ph.D. disertion entitled '"The Motor Performance of Educable Mentally Retarded Children and -the Identification of Factors Associated with Individual Differences", Dr. Widdop has had a number of papers published in both ca .. adian and American journals deal• ing with educable mentally retarded children and other subjects including a study on the effects of ballet training on athletes. Dr. Widdop has already assumed his new duties. The new program, leading to a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education degree, wi II begin in September. Mr. Colosimo, Mus. Bae., Mus. Mas., Mus. Mas. Ed., has an exce~ tional list of accomplishments to· his crenit. including performancesunderLeopold Stockowsky with the American Symphony Orchestra, first clarinet -in the Manhattan Symphony Orchestra and the Radio City Music Hall Sym• phony Orchestra. He studied under Leon Russianoff at the Manhattan School of Music after beginning his music career in Fort William and then moving on to the National Youth Orchestra in Toronto. Mr. Dahlgren, Mus. Bae., is the co•founder of the Lakehead Symphony Orchestra and this year wi 11 be a special guest lecturer in the univer• sity's CLC course, Man and His Arts. Mr. Dahlgren was born in the Maritimes and studied at Acadia University School of Music and later under Alberto Guerrero in Toronto and Leon Kushner in New York. He has many recitals to his credit and recently has been active as a festi• val adjudicator across Canada. Gregory Schulte is a native of Saskatchewan who is living in POIL Arthur in order to continue his studies under Mr. Dahlgren. He has been a consistent winner in the NAME ALUMNI EXECUTIVE O Mrs. Margaret Page was elected president of the Lakehead University Alumni association at the annual meeting held recently. Berndt, wi 11 present, during the 1969·70 academic year, a special program entitled 'SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ASPECTS OF PLURAL SOCIETIES'. The course wi 11 define the con· cepts and conditions of social and cultural pluralism. Some attention wi 11 be devoted to the conceptua I framework of the "plural society,. current in the theoretical literature. Particular emphasis wi 11 be devoted to revealing the diversity of cultural bases and examining the types of social organization evi• denced by African and Caribbean ethnographic literature. It is hoped that this investigation will indicate its importance for social theory and research. Pacific Investments MID CANADA CONFERENCE NEARS O Lakehead University wi 11 be the centre of national attention from August 18-22 when m,re than 200 prominent Canadians · convene to discuss Canada•s future. The occasion wi 11 be the Mid-Canada· Development Corridor Conference .. to examine the advisabi I ity of establishing a nation-wide policy and plan for the development of Canada•s mid-north:• Governor General Roland Michener, C.C. C.D. will head an impressive list of keynote speakers which includes the President of the National Research Council, Dr. D. W. Schneider, the former Premier of Manitobat Duff -Roblin, ..Mr. Canada", John Fisher. and Dr. D. M. So I andt, chairman of the Science Counc i I of Canada. Twenty-Eight resource speakers, including CBC president George Davidson, wi 11 lead discussion on the development concept under seven seminar headings, Resources, Industrialization, Environmental and Ecological Factors. Urbanization, Transportation, Communication and Financing and Trade Implications. They will be supplemented by an additional 15 key resource people representing the many facets of Canadian society, from business to the Indian-Eskimo Association of Canada. Delegates to the conference include75 representatives from Canadian-control led businesses, 25 representatives from sponsoring universities across Canada and 25 representatives from government agencies. The delegates will meet again in August. 1970 for the final session with a tour of the Corridor itself and a visit to Northern Siberia and Sweden planned for the intermediate period. Although attendance at the conference is by invitation only, the public is invited to view the special display of future-oriented designs and devices for northern living. The display, which involves approximately 45 exhibits, will be presented in a revolutionary building concept, an air-supported dome structure which wi 11 be constructed directly behind the new Centennial Building. The disPIay wi 11. be open every day of the conference from 1-9 p.m. The Centennial Building itself will be officially opened on the first day bf the conference, Monday at 4 p.m. by Dr. Schneider. The Chairman of the Conference and the man who conceived the Mid-Canada Corridor idea, Richard Rohmer, O.C. will officially open the conference itself Monday evening. Dr. Schneider will then give the opening address on Tuesday morning when he discusses .. The Role of Research in Northern Development ... He will be followed later in the day by Gaternor General Michener and Dr. O. M. Solandt. Chairman of the Science Coµncil of Canada who will talk on .. Technology & Northern Development". Dr. N. W. Judd, of the Scott Polar Research Institute and W. Currie, President of the Indian-Eskimo Association of Canada are -scheduled to speak Wednesday. John W. Human and Economic Factors ... * BUBBLEDOME, SPACESUITS AND FLOATING AIRPORTS O A replica of the $300,000 space suit designed for the Apollo moon walk... Foods of the future ... A floating airport design ... The above displays and more than 40 other products, concepts and research projects which have imp I ications for future Canadian development will be on display during the Mid-Canada Development Corridor Conference. And they will all be housed in a bubble. The •bubble• is a 20,000 square foot air-supported structure which will be constructed behind the Centennial Building on Tuesday morning, Aug. l2. The dome was developed by Astrodome Structures Limited whose General Manager is a former Lakehead University professor. Phi I Coulter. The displays have been provided by architects, engineers, and companies across Canada. They are divided into five categories: industrialization, urbanization, transportation and comm uni cation and futuristic ideas or extrapolations. Industrial displays include models with functioning moving parts. a capsule pipeline to carry semi-solids. pellets. iron, coal, crude oil,a walking dr-agline,an encased model of a quadrant shiploader and the Apollo 11 spacesuit. A photographic display of the development of a futuristic town site. models of future house designs and an encased table showing food people wi II eat in the future are included in the displays under the category of .. Urbanization ... The C.N.R., International Hydrodynamics and the Canadian Forces Air Transport Command have provided exhibits in the category of .. Transportation and Communication". Futuristic Ideas (Extrapolations) include displays by the Canadian Air Forces, Air Transport Command and the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests. �PLAQUE TO BE UNVEILED DR. SCHNEIDER TO OPEN CENTENNIAL BUILDING O Dr. D. W. Schneider, President of the National Research Council wi II officially open Lakehead University's new$14,000,000 Centennial Building on Monday, August 18. Dr. Schneider, who will be in the Lakehead as a keynote speaker at the Mid-Canada Development Conference, wi 11 be handed a symbolic key to declare the bui Iding open. The ceremony wi 11 begin at 4 p.m. in the agora between the Centennial Bui !ding and the University Centre Building. A tour of the new building will be conducted for all guests who will then be served coffee in the agora. A special plaque unvei I ing wi 11 also take place during the ceremony. The plaque, out1ining the history of Lakehead University from 1946 to the present, wi 11 be unvei I ed by the present Chairman of the Board of Governors, J. M. Fleming after a brief address by the past chairman of the Board, Or. Mel Bartley and Prof. s. F. Wise, representing the Archeological and Historical Site Board bf Ontario. Born in Wolseley, Saskatchewan, Dr. Schneider received his M.Sc. from the University of Sask- atchewan, and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from McGi 11. He joined the staff of the National Research Council of Canada as Head of the General Physical Chemistry Section of the Division of Chemistry in 1946. He served as Director of the Division of Pure Chemistry from 1963 to 1966, and Vice-President (Scientific) of the National Research Counci I of Canada from 1965 unti I his appointment as President on September 1, 1967. Dr. Schneider is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, The Royal Society of Canada, and the Chemical Institute of Canada. He has been awarded the Chemical Institute of Canada Medal and the Henry Marshall Tory Medal of the Royal Society of Canada. The Honorary Doctor of Science degree has been conferred on him by the Universities of York, Memorial, Saskatchewan, McMaster, Moncton and Laval; the Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Alberta and Laurentian. Carefully chosen by the conference chainnan, Richard Rohmer, a Toronto lawyer who is also the dri,ving force behind the Mid-Canada concept, all members of the team are keenly concerned about Canada's future and feel that through the conference, they may help plan an intelligent and rational development of Canada's habitable MidNorth. To accomplish this they have worked 14 or more · hours every day of the week for months and, in some cases, for the past year. Al I enthusiastic and wel I travel led, the members of the team are from al I parts of Canada. Some are sti 11 students and will return to university in the fall. Some knew each other before when they worked at Expo in the Ontario Pavilion and a number will continue working together with Mid-Canada after the Lakehead conference. Brian Hay,, 25, a former special project officer with • Department of Trade and Development in Toronto, is the Conference'·s Executive Secretary. Armed with a walkie- • talkie in one hand and note book in the other, Bri an is continuously in motion about the campus, checking, re• checking and revising plans and projects with other members of the group. A recent article in the Toronto Telegram, commenting on the young team, said "undoubtly, if their enthusiasm and long working hours have anything to do with the outcome ( of the conference) it wi 11 be a resounding success.'' Dressed in olive green outfits ( dresses for the girls; pin striped suits for the males) the team will also act as hosts and hostesses during the five-day conference. Their major duties will be to provide transportation and information for the 160 delegates who represent sponsoring universities, business, industry, commerce and government from all parts of Canada. As orie of the girls quipped, they will do everything from "waking the delegates up in the morning to tucking them in at night." Lloyd Rain, a recent graduate in Architecture from UBC is the bubbledome expert and is in charge of displays for the dome. He "raised" the 12,000 sq. ft., air supported structure which will house 45 futuristic exhibitions contributed by many coJporations. When the conference ends. he will probably return to promoting the unique new air supported structures for his own company, Rain Air Structures. Sally Bowen, a former Expo hostess was ca I led from Brussels where she was a French-English translator to serve as an Administrative Secretary for the group. John Campion is the conference's Press Officer. In September he will return to the University of Toronto's Law School to continue his post graduate work in international relations. Darlene Haywood is also an Administrative Secretary with the group. A former Winnipeg resident, she joined the young team after being contacted in San Miguel, Mexico where she was studying photography. Wendy Wilmot, a former personal assistant to Canadian skier Nancy Green and Expo hostess is conference social convener. Magda Seydeygart, a student, is graphics assistant. Eeva Nagy, a former Ontario pavi 11 ion hostess, has lived in France for the last year. Her official capacity during the conference wi 11 be as a hos1ess. Ron Veale and John Monderick are in charge of transportation and tours for delegates during the conference. They are both law students and wi 11 return to their studies in the fall. Barbara Kennedy, a draftswoman, is the assistant to Lloyd Rain and is working on the exhibits for the dome. Tim Taylor, the youngest member of the group, is Registratar. Mr. McLeod has already assumed his duties. He will live in the Director's suite in the new Residence Vi II age. Mr. McLeod will also join the university's English Department staff as Assistant Professor. A drama enthus_iast who has, among other credits, directed two plays in the Playhouse Theatre in Winnipeg, he is also the coauthor of a book intended for Secondary School students of drama entitled "A Theatre Happening". After completing his high school education in Sault Ste. Marie, Mr. McLeod attended Victoria College, The University of Toronto where he obtained his B.A. degree in 1947 as a gold medalI i st. Canadian Union of Students (C.U.S.), I\Jational Congress will be held at Lakehead University from August 27 to September 3. It is the annual meeting for all member universities from across Canada to formulate policies for the union for the coming year. As well, the president for 1970-71 will be elected. C.U.S. is presently facing the problem of lack of membership due to the referendums on various campuses last year. It is the hope of the member universities that the differences of the various campuses can be resolved and that the delegates could then return to their student bodies with r,oncrete policies which could be carried out. The congress will be open to all interested persons (students, academic and administrative staff, public) and it will be an ideal opportunity for delegates to observe at first hand the formulation of guidelines by which the union will operate. Further, if anyone has an issue which hewishes to have raised, it may be brought before The Congress for discussion. Hopefully, The Congress will help to stimulate moreconscious and co-ordinated programs for Lakehead University in the coming year. Some of the issues which will arise should proveofgreat importance DENNIS WALLACE to students at Lakehead. AMS President They will include the growing level of student unemployment before and after graduation and how it ties in with the Canadian economy; the powers of department committees over top level representation such as The Senate; and curricula comn1ittees which would look into such things as the relevance of certain courses or the I ines along which they are taught. In the coming year, C.U.S. will be making an all out effort to rebuild the union and to implement bread and butter policies such as those previously mentioned. The overriding factor in all motions passed by C.U.S. is that they are of no use unless they are fol lowed up by the council and students of the member campuses. Bickell Foundation to( the purchase of grinding and polishing equipment for the preparation of polished specimens of sulphide and oxide ores. This equipment is specifically for the 3rd year Geology program as its use is essential to the course in mineral deposits. The grant represents a continuing interest by the Trustees in the development of geological teaching and research at the University. In May 1967, the Department received a grant of $15,000 from the Bickel I Foundation for the purchase of petrological microscopes. ** * * * * O Professor Tim Ryan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Lakehead University has been elected to fu II membership in the British Institute of Management, an independent and non-profit making body which has as its president His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh. The book is one of the selected readings in Physics published by Pergamon Press, and the author, Dr. John Kendall, was invited to contribute to the series by the Genera I Edi tor, Dr. D. ter Haar of Oxford University. The book covers the development of the transistor since its beginning, and the appropriate solid state physics necessary for understanding the way the transistor functions. Included in the second section of the book are selected scientific papers which were of prime importance in the development of the transistor. The book is intended for final year physics students and electronic engineers, as well as first year post graduate students in other related disciplines. It is the third book written by Dr. Kendall. Fellowship Committee has awarded the 1969 Fellowship of$2,000 to Walter R. Crowe, Assistant Professor of Business Administration. The award is intended to support Mr. Crowe's research into the use of computers in hospital administration. In specific, he is investigating both the possibi I ity and the validity of a computerized system to permit short term adaptive forecasting of demand for hospital supplies. Work done so far includes discussions with computer experts, hospital administrators and industrial inventory control specialists in North America and in Britain, and an intensive study of the forecasting system designed by a I arge British engineering company. He has recently returned from sabbatical leave at Birmingham University during which time, besides devoting himself 'to full-time research, he was consultant to the Admiralty in London and did work in cooperation with the Royal Radar Establishment, England. He was born and educated in Birmingham, England and came to the Lakehead from London in 1964. He and his family are now Canadian citizens. His nine-year association with Lakehead University began in 1960 when he lectured in first year economics at the former College of Arts, Science and Technology. In 1962 he became Bursar and, when the college became Lakehead University in 19(,5. he assumed the position of Director of Finance. David was deeply involved with the Development Fund Campaign in 1967 and carried the same enthusiasm into his role as Director of the Mid-Canada Development Corridor Foundation Conference held here in August. Mr. Morgan expressedhis thoughts on universities and education in general in this recent interview with L.U. Week: L.l/. Week: What is the reason behind your leaving'Lakehead University? Morgan: I came to Lakehead University in September 1962 because I wanted to be associated with an educational institution. It has been a fascinating and rewarding experience to _see the university grow from 200 students to close to 3,000 over the past seven years. Recently my main work at Lakehead University has been of a promotional or public relations nature in the broadest sense, including such projects as the Fund Raising Campaign of 1967, which provided the necessary funds for the first phase of the bu i Iding program now nearing completion, and the Mid-Canada Development Corridor Conference. There doesn't appear to be any exciting and challenging projects of this nature on the immediate horizon. measure whether the educational experience wi 11 affect the student's approach to living, to being. I wish our educational system oould give more emphasis to international studies. Most Canadian universities are too insular in their thinking. They seem to feel that as long as their students understand western society this is al I that counts, and yet western societies make up only one fifth of the world's population. It would be extremely healthy if as many students as possible in Canadian universities could spend their third year studying in a "third world" country. It would be healthy for Canadian universities to exchange students with universities in Mexico and South Atnerica for instance. L.U. Week: Are you worried about student unrest and what directions do you think it wi II take in the future? Morgan: We need more "activists" in our school and university systems. I The cha I lenge of trying to be an effective full-time teacher appeals to me very much. I hope to make education in general and "economics" in particular meaningful to my students. L.U. Week: Are you happy with the relationship between Lakehead University and the Lakehead school system? Morgan: Frankly I find both too rigid in their approach to education. I subscribe to the kind of philosophy expressed in the Hall-DennisReport which reiterates time and time again that education is definitely not the learning of a multitude of facts about anything. Rather, the educator should try to arouse, encourage and stimulate the natural interests of students to learn more about themselves and the world in which they are living. I wish this university and all universities allowed much more freedom of choice to the student. The trend toward non-graded schools and recent changes in the Arts curriculum are most hearteninp in this respect. I wish universities, colleges and schools would abolish grades. I don't think an exam or a test can ever measure whether or not a student has had a significant educationa I experience. A test or exam can measure today what the student "knows" or remembers today but it can't possibly do not mean we need more "extremists" _ whose apparent answer to society's ills is revolution followed by anarchy. We do need more students who are dissatisfied with the kind of education and the kind of society we now have and are wi II ing to push for significant reforms. L.U. There is so much that needs to be done in this country and in other parts of the world that no students should feel that "tuning out" or"turning off" is a realistic approach. I hope the new faculty wi 11 provide much needed leadership by encouraging all of its components (academic staff, students, administrators) to become really involved in the fundamental policies of the Faculty. Morgan: I have never been able• to find out what this university's purpose or its philosophy concerning education really is. The philosophy that seems to emerge is summed up by the word "more"; in other words, more students, more buildings, more courses, more academic staff, etc., etc., but what for? . . ;, . Currently the university s main purpose appears to be to train people for industry, the teaching profession, and other professions. I personally feel that our universities shou Id be places where students are encouraged to think about themselves and the relationship of their actions on other people in society. I feel that the educational process should help students to expand their senses so that they can appreciate greatness and beauty in other cultures, in writing, music, theatre, architecture, and nature and that they should, after graduation use their increased awareness and sensitivity to help rid the world of ugliness and degradation. The following quotation succinctly expresses my views on higher education of whatever type: "The purpose of a liberal arts education is to expand to the limit the individual's capacity for self education, for seeking and finding meaning, truth and enjoyment in everything he does". A. Whitney Gri swo Id Problems and Prospects" will be given on Friday, September 19 by Mr. Klaus H. Pringsheim, Associate Professor of Political Science, McMaster University. It will begin at 8 p.m. in the Faculty of Education Building (formerly Teachers College). The lecture wi 11 help interested persons prepare for a Japan Study Tour organized by the Extension Departments of Ontario Universities in view of the widespread interest in Expo '70. Underthe direction of Mr.Pringsheim, who has travel led widely in the East and I ived in Japan, the tour wi 11 leave Toronto on May 11 and arrive in Tokyo on May 12. A brief Japanese conversation oourse is planned for April, 1970 to give tour members a basic vocabulary which will enable them to make their way al:x>ut the country. During his lecture Mr. Pringsheim wi 11 answer questions both about Japan and the Study Tour. Al I interested persons are invited to attend the lecture. Further information and a brochure outlining the tour are available from the Director of Extension, Lakehead University. A recent McMaster University press release describes Mr. Pringsheim as "a big man, a hard-driving man, who speaks and teaches Japanese". He has just come back from a quick roundthe-world trip which included a two week visit to Japan to set up the Japan Study Tour. His many years of residence in Japan during his youth and early adult years wi 11 be valuable to the tour and the Japanese culture, language and society course which proceeds it. Special lectures and seminars wi II be conducted by Mr. Pringsheim and others during the tour. Born in Berlin, Germany, Mr. Pringsheim attended the School for Japanese Language and Culture in Tokyo before serving as a Language tutor in German, English, Japanese and Russian from 1940 until 1952. From 1948 until 1951 he was Assistant Professor of Japanese at the Army Language School in California. He received his B.A. with honors in Political Science from the University of California. The money raised from this campaign wi 11 be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation. The disease, Cystic Fibrosis is a child killer affecting respiratory aid digestive systems. No cure is know'"!. The aim of the Shinerama Committee is to get as many students involved in the campaign as possible, l:x:>th Frosh and Upper Years. From the senior students we require drivers in particular. Shoe-shine kits, free transportation, free lunches and a free dance afterwards will be provided for al I participants. We need a minimum of 350 students to take part in Shinerama '69 to raise our objective of $7,000. We have received challenges from Canadian Universities and Colleges such as Mc~aster, Ryerson, University of Saskatchewan, B.C.I.T., and The University of Manitoba that we wi 11 not beat their totals. Brock University has even threatened a law suit against us.for even thinking of challenging them. Let's go out and show Canada what Lakehead is made of. Office (ext. 259). * * * LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY TO HOST CRIME, PUNISHMENT CONFERENCE A conference on "New Perspectives in Crime, Punishment and Rehabilitation" will be held at Lakehead University's Faculty of Education Building on September 26 and 27. The two-day conference is sponsored by the Psychology Department of Lakehead University, the Lakehead Social Planning Counci I, the Ontario Department of Correction and the Department of the Solicitor General. Talks will be given by three authorities in the field of human behaviour and law: Dr. A. Mahrer, Professor of Psychology at Miami University; Dr. P. Katz, a Child Psychiatrist from Winnipeg, and Magistrate J. Dubiensky, Police Magistrate for the city of Winnipeg. Dr. Mahrer will give two talks entitled "The Uses of Mental Hospitals and Prisons" and "Alternatives to lnstitutionali zation"; Dr. Katz wi 11 speak on "Patterns in the Development of Juvenile Delinquency"; and "Treatment of Delinquency"; Magi strate Dubiensky's talk concerns the "Role of Police and Courts in Correction". There will also be panel and small group discussions involving delegates as wel I as senior officials from both Federal and Provincial Departmrots of Correction. One of the busiest places on campus during registration? Judging from the crowds coming and going in that direction, it is the Lakehead University Bookstore. For months now the Bookstore staff has been unpacking hundreds of boxes of textbooks and paperbacks pertaining to all courses taught at the University. Tons of writing paper and notebooks were stocked before regi stration. Bookstore manageress, Day Laban, is hopeful that all texts will arrive in time for the start of classes, and that the present small store will bear up under the strain of catering to the needs of some 3,000 ful I-time, and 900 part-time students. But better times are coming. Sometime around the first of November the Lakehead University Bookstore will move to its new and fully modern quarters in the newly vacated Lakehead University Cafeteria. The new Bookstore wi 11 have 3700 square feet of store-space as wet I as a stockroom I arger than the entire pre sent store. There wi 11 be thousands of paperbacks and hardcovers related to al I courses, and a large, general selection of good literature. Students will be able to browse to their hearts' content. A great variety of stationery items wi II be available as wel I as study-guides, drafting instruments, artists' supp I ies lab coats and dissecting sets. There wi 11 be space to stock a great variety of "bargain books". a sort of yearround book-sale of low-priced hardcover books on a great variety of subjects. A good selection of Lakehead University crested gift-ware, glasses, beermugs and jewelry, as wel I as greeting cards wi 11 al so be available. This new Bookstore was planned less than a year ago. It is the result of the energy and initiative of the Lakehead University Bookstore Committee which determines all Bookstore policy. The committee consists of three students, three members of faculty, the Deans of al I three Faculties, the Comptroller and the Bookstore manager. Initiated three years ago, the Committee forms a vital line between all members of the University community (faculty, students and staff) and the bookstore itself, making the bookstore a truly co-operative venture. One of the Committee's actions in early 1969 was the institution of biannual 5% rebate on each student's collected bookstore receipts, rather like a dividend. The bookstore's t prices are strictly publisher's and manufacturer's I ist-prices (with the exception of books ofr U.S. origin where the U.S. exchange js added), and the 5% rebate tlius gives the student a chance to save 53/o on al I Bookstore purchases. Another Bookstore Committee resolution was that any Bookstore profits must be used to improve the store's facilities, thus providing better book service for the students. Student-members of the Bookstore Committee function as liaison between the student-body and its Bookstore. They and their predecessors in earlier years have worked hard to make the plan of new and spacious quarters a reality. PSYCHOLOGY DEPT. "PLANNING" SESSION Future plans and directions for development of the Lakehead University's Dept. of Psychology will be the focus of discussion on Sept. 20 and 21 at a special meeting to be held at Memory Lodge. The meeting will involve faculty members of the Psychology Dept. as well as a group of students who have been invited to attend. Items on the agenda for discussion include such topics as: staff-student relations, psychology in the community, the direction of departmental expansion academic freedom, etc. The meeting is considered to be a most important one for the future of the department in the opinion of Chairman W. T. Melnyk. ..The importance of serious discussion in a milieu free from ordinary distractions cannot be underestimated," he said. Dr. Melnyk added: "The future development of any organization depends on this type of long range planning for healthy growth. All seven concerts in the "Intimacy'' series wi 11 begin at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of the University Centre bui Iding. The public is invited to attend each concert in the series. Tickets are $2 for adu Its and $1 for students. All students evrolled in the CLCe6 Credit Course (Man and His Arts) wi I I be admitted free of charge since the "Intimacy" concerts are a major part of their course work. Schedule of "Intimacy Concerts": "Campus" Stretches Over 30,000 Square Miles TRAVELLING PROFESSORS OFF AGAIN OLakehead University's "travelling professors" will begin their weekly trips to district communities in October as part of the University's Extension program. The Program stretches over an area of approximately 30,000 square miles and includes 10 Northwestern Ontario communities from Dryden to Manitouwadge. Using air, train and auto facilities, the professors· commute between their classrooms-away-frornhome about once a week in order to provide courses for adult students. Courses in Dryden, Sioux Lookou~, Geraldton, Fort Frances, and Kenora wi 11 be conducted via video tape lectures with bull sessions about once-a-month between the professors and their pupi Is.
