Dean of Arts Tim Ryan today announced that the University Senate has recently ~proved a I iberal i zation of the first year program which allows students more flexibility in the selection of courses: The decision was made after months of study by the Faculty of Arts: Previously four of the five first year courses were prescribed for most students: Now emphasis has been placed on general education through an extension and a broadening of the choice of courses offered: Also many of the previous first year requirements are no longer mandatory: "The new first year program is an exciting innovation which parallels a growing trend in Canadian universities towards general education and interdisciplinary study'; commented Dean Ryan: "The curriculum is designed to encourage the students' understanding of his own environment, of society and of himself", he said: "The criteria against which our objectives must be assessed are first, the development of sound judgment and critical faci I ities, second) y. the DEAN TIM RYAN encouragement ot a truly permanent spirit of enquiry creativity, and enlightenment, and thirdly, the maintenance and extension of our cu I tural resources:" Students are requested to select courses widely from among the many departments to ensure exposure to a variety of ideas, concepts. and ways of thinking: Each degree program should, ideally, be a balanced program with a judicious choice from a selected discipline, al lied di sci pl i nes,and general education.· It wi II still be possible for a student to follow a traditional program but it wi 11 now be a matter of his own choice: The new program, thus, is not a ra.dical uprooting of the old but merely a reconsideration and realignment which makes other alternatives possible: It will make provision for new areas of specialization which defied old disciplinary boundaries: The student will thus be able to look at a field of study rather than a discipline. As an example, although the matter is still under consideration, he could build his own program on urban studies or developing nations, looking at the political, economic, historical, sociological and psychological aspects of the overall problem: This is possible because he may now more easily combine relevent courses in other disciplines with his regular major. Dean Ryan emphasized that the new program wi 11 bring an embarrassingly . rich freedom of choice to the student and ·that close consultation with and counselling by faculty members will be vital: He stressed the importance of the role of the secondary school counsellors in preparing the groundwork for the development of a meaningful program in the first year: In general, the program is prepared so that students may change direction completely after first year without serious confliction or comp I ication. The first year program has been divided into four major groupings, language, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. The student must choose one course from each of three groups and one from the fourth group if required by the department in which he is majoring: He is then left with one or two course electives to make up his five first-year courses. Because of the new grouping system students will also not have to be concerned with conflicting course times, a major cause of concern in the past. The four groupings are as fol lows: Group 1: One course selected from: English 1a6, English asa 2nd language(operi to students whose mother tongue is not English and who have not had their secondary schooling in English), and French 1a6. Members of the Arts Committee on counselling and registration meet to discuss procedures for the forthcoming pre-counsel ling program. * NEW CLC COURSES 1,,., * COUNSELLING PROGRAM FOR ARTS FRESHMEN t]The Faculty of Arts at Lakehead University begins a program of individual counselling for first year arts students early in July. The counsel I ing sessions wi 11 give more personal attention to the students• individual programs, particularly since the university this year is offering a revised first year program with a wide element of choice. Dean of Arts. Tim Ryan has emphasized that .. the new program brings such a rich freedom of choice to the student that close consultation with and counsel I ing by faculty members will be vital. .. It is also hoped that the early counselling will alleviate the rush of registration in the fall. In the past students have been counsel led during the registration procedure. This year they will be encouraged to decide their programs beforehand. so that registration will only involve fee payment. student's cards and the completion of forms. In addition to their notice of acceptance from the university. each freshman has already received a first year calendar of courses to enable him to chose his options. • Now. during the counsel ling session, he and the faculty advisor will discuss his preferred options in order to determine a we 11-formul ated program. A number of first year students who are employed outside the Lakehead for the summer have already been counselled. The majority of students. however. wi II meet by appointment with the counsel Iors during the next month. Upper year students of all faculties will also receive a form outlining their options in addition to receiving their university calendar of courses. Their timetables will be initially determined by the returned forms and any counselling they require will then take place at registration. DA unique new series of •comparative Literature and Cul~ure ' ( CLC) courses wi 11 be offered to first year Lakehead University students this fall. Writers. thinkers and artists of various ages and cultures who have contributed to the development of western civilization will be studied in five full-credit optiona! courses offered by the Dept. of Languages in the Faculty of Arts. The CLC series wi 11 al so provide an opportunity to evaluate interactions between literature. music and painting. One of the courses, 'Man and His Arts• ,will be an ambitious. interdisciplinary course taught basically from a 'sights and sounds' philosophy. Developed by the University's Director of Music, Boris Brott, the course will consist of two series or sections running concurrently. The first section will be made up of live lectureconcerts using various groups and special guest lecturers. Highlighting this series will be seven 'Intimacy• concerts which wi II be divided into three sections. each proceeded by a short lecture. The first wi II be on the music of the era. the second on the graphic art of the era and the third will be devoted to literature. The second section will be nourly classes devoted to technical aspects of music and involving live musical demonstrations. Each student wi II be fami I iar enough with an instrument of the string and wind families to play a simple melody by the end of the course term. The full credit course will include lectures. discussion groups and seminars in addition to films, television tapes and recordings. A second CLC course. "Classical Literature in Translation', offers a background knowledge of Classical Greek and Roman authors and their works. A study of mythology is included. An 'Introduction to Russian Thought and Culture• will involve a survey of the development of art, literature and the socio-political and regional aspects of Russian history from the Kievan civilization to the end of the Tsarist rule and including Soviet political thought and scientific achievement. This course has been previously offered as Russian Civilization 2c6. The fourth course is •world Literary Masterpieces in Translation•, a study of major works of world literature. It is hoped that a CLC extention course in Europe will be held during the 1970 Summer School. The course 'Themes in Western Civilization' will include visits t~ European countries includi•ng Belgium, France and Switzerland. Studies wi II concern the principles of of western thought and culture as illustrated in major I iterary and philosophical works. Included wi II be studies of current problems in western civi Ii zation and their institutional framework. * COMPUTER CENTRE TO SHUT DOWN O The University's Computer Centre has scheduled a shutdown of approximately three weeks duration, August 4 - 23rd. This interruption is necessary to complete major renovations of the Computer Room. The shutdown is dependent upon the delivery of materials and may be altered accordingly. The Computer Centre wi II provide service on a limited scale by uti I izing I.B.M.'s Winnipeg Data Centre for processing production and high priority special jobs. A grant of $1,670 from the Department of University Affairs is for a study of the environment, particularly temperature, as it relates to aquatic vegetation such as wi Id rice. The second grant of $3,000, from the Canadian Department of Indian Affairs and ·Northern Development, is for a study of wild rice and blueberries in the Nakina-Armstrong region to determine the economic and biological potentials of these crops. ****** 0 Dr. K.J. Charles, Professor and Chairman, Department of Economics wi 11 be presenting a paper on ,.The Mechism of Value Change in the Introduction of a New Food An Economist's View" at a conference on "The Persistence of Food Habits"to be held between July 14and 18, 1969 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The conference is being sponsored by the Engineering Foundation Research Conference in co-operation with the Agency for International Development. * * * * * * Ivor Davies of Lakehead University's Geography Department visited Toronto June 23 - 25th to confer with members of the Regional Development Branch regarding his recent research into the pattern of service provision in Northwestern Ontario. Preliminary findings were presented to an Inter-Departmental Committee of Deputy Ministers and the· results wi II appear in an interim report to be released in the fall. OFF TO MEXICO Twenty-nine students bound for six weeks of studies in Saltillo, Mexico departed by bus from the university on ·Tuesday, July 1. He hopes to have the problem ','dried, up" and grassed before the end of the summer .. Mr. Sitch and his crew, despite unfavorable weather, have been able to plant a wide variety of flowers and shrubs, both native and exotic about the campus. The intention was two-fold: to make al I members of the University community aware of appointments, changes, etc: before, or at least at the same time, as the general public; and to provide a complete copy of the release as the press version was often shortened or changed. Some members have pointed out that the information was often redundant, esp_ecially since internal mailing problems have caused releases to arrive I ate. Other members, however, have found the releases a valuable source of information and wish to continue receiving copies. * * To make this area of communication more effective, two small changes have been made. First, copies of all press releases will now be sent only to department chairmen, the AMS and staff members who wish to be included in the list. (If you wish to receive your own copy, please have your department secretary contact the Department of Information Services.) Copies of all press releases will also be posted on bulletin boards. DR. WATSON TO SPEAK THURSDAY One of the world's leading geographers, Dr. J. Wreford Vvatson, wi 11 deliver an address entitled "The University as a Community", on Thursday, ' March 27th in the University Centre Theatre; As a guest of the LakeheadUniversity Lecture Series Committee, he will give the fifth in a series of lectures entitled "The Nature of the Universi• ties/' The talk will begin at 8:15 p.m. From 1937 unti I 1949, Dr. Watson was professor and head of the Geography and Sociology Department of McMaster University. He then became Di rector of the Geographical Branch of the Canadian Department of Mines and Teoi,nical services and for five years promoted and organized much of the geographical research· in Canada. One of his outstanding contributions was to initiate the production of the official Atlas of Canada. In 1954 he became head of the Department of Geography at the University of Edinburgh. 1/vhi le at Edinburgh, Dr. Watson was one of the leading forces behind the creation of the University's Faculty of Social Science. He became Dean of this Faculty in 1964. Dr.- 1/vatson was visiting Professor of Geography at the University of British Columbia during the summer of 1968; He presently holds this same position at the University of Manitoba. For the summer of 1969, Dr. Watson will assume the position of Director of Graduate Studies in Geography at Columbia University in New York. The Hatachi RMU-7 Double Focusing Mass Spectrometer will be used by chemists, physicists, geologists, biologists and material technoligists in both applied and pure research. Members of the Chemistry Department's academic staff are now conducting research programs which require the information the instrument provides. Sponsored by the Aesthetic Society of Lakehead University, the exhibit includes sound track tape recordings of adapted music and poetry, paintings in various media, ink drawings and sculptures: One of the highlights of the exhibit is a liquid light show. The St: Paul Woodwind Quintet will be featured on March 31 at 8 p:m. The exhibition concludes on Thursday, April 3. Charles Sharun, co-ordinator of the exhibition, is shown in the photograph (left) above with some of the paintings. Persons appointed to these committees would serve a two-year term plan and be eligible for an additional two-year term. Each committee would include 11 members: two members appointed by the president; two by the Executive of the Professional Association; two by the Director of University Schools; and two by the Chairman of the School in consultation with the Director of University Schools: In addition, the President, the Director of University Schools and the Chairman of the School concerned act as ex-officio members: Al I appointments are subject to ratification by the Board of Governors. The Advisory Committees are intended to help the academic staff design courses which are as practical as possible and yet flexible enough to meet the changing needs of industry and society. SHOPPING MALL D Dr. Tamblyn stated that a meeting was held with a number of local merchants to discuss the concept of shopping mall. Under the Shopping Mall plan, a tunnel would be built to connect the Food Services and the existing tunnel between the I ibrary and the university centre buifding. The tunnel would be enlarged to incorporate four or five stores. Rental payments of around $4.50 per square by the stores would be necessary to finance the tunnel itsel_f and the stores: The merchants, however, stated that such a figure was unrealistic and that they couldn't even consider any proposal over $3 per square • foot. Dr. Tamblyn stated he would ask the Planning Department to see if a simpler version of the Shopping Mall could be designed to minimize costs. The fi Im is described as "h-alf thriller, half parody" and will be shown at 8:30 p.m. in the University Centre Theatre. Films made by the Advanced Creative Writing class (English 3w6) will be shown three times on Wednesday, April 9 on the television monitar in the Senior Lounge. The approximate times of the showings will be 10 a.m., 12 noon and 3 o.m. D Despite a heavy snow cover, a group of 16 third year geography students, led by lecturer Brian Phillips, visited the Black Sturgeon Field Station on Friday and Saturday, March 28 and 29 for an exercise in ground survey techniques. They were the first organized student group to use the University Research Centre. The exercise involved the laying out of ground control for low altitude helicopter photography from which large scale sequential mapping of the changing topography of the snow surface could be obtained. The research program was, although feasible, a fictitious one in view of the cdst of such mapping method&. But the students, divided into two competing survey parties organized their activities weli and spent a Saturday of magnificent weather engaged in the project. Each instrument tripod was supported on specially made wooden squares and each student wore snowshoes resulting in difficulties seldom faced even by protes.' sional surveyors. Each group calculated co-ordinates of their control points and presented a final base-map and verbal report on the Sunday afternoon. Both parties heavily criticised the others' methods and accuracy before packing to return home; Apart from a good bit of work being completed, the excursion was also a social occasion. Saturday evening saw much singing to the banjo and saxaphone and a look at several award winning and controversial films. The students agreed that it would be a long wait for next year's trip. CONVOCATION SPEAKER D Dr. John B. MacDonald, Executive Vice Chairman of the Committee of Presidents and former President of the University of British Columbia will be the speaker at Lakehead University Convocation Exercises on May 31, 1969. The convocation was previously scheduled for May 24 but was put back one week due to the February study week which necessitated changes in the end of term and exam schedule. HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR D The annual high school students' Science Fair will be held Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12 in the Great Hall of Lakehead University. Sponsored by the Science Teachers' Association of Northwestern Ontario, the exhibition will include science projects submitted by 68 students from high schools in the Lakehead and surrounding communities. The pub I ic wi 11 have an opportunity to view the exhibits and confer with the students on Friday from 8 p.m. until 10 p.-m; and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. unti I 3:30 o.m. �UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE SHOPP I NG MALL D The services of a Lakehead realty firm have been acquired by the university to find tenants for the proposed shopping mall. Simon Hoad was nominated to act as A.M.S. Steering Committee Chairman to work with the Administration on the shopping mall. PARKING President Tamblyn stated that preliminary plans for re-allocation of University facilities might have to be altered, (e.g. University Centre Building) if a recent Dept. of University Affairs ruling sticks. It stated that there will be no funds for new Capital Projects in 1969-70. Only projects which are currently underway will receive necessary funds for completion. The ruling affects the parking lot expansion pl ans. STUDENT FEES R)R A.M.S. PURPOSES A.M.S. representatives felt that A.M.S. and S.A.S. Fees should continue to be compulsory. OFF CAMPUS HOUSING RESEARCH GRANTS 0 Alan McEwan, Director of the Computer Centre, has received a $29,500 NRC Grant for the Centre to assist in the operation and maintenance of the university computer facility and to install two IBM 2741 communication terminals. 0 Hawker Siddeley of Canada Limited, Canadian Car Fort William Division, has provided a grant of $5,250 to the School of Engineering for research in the area of information and control systems for manufacturing production. Personnel involved in this project are Associate Professor Henry North, Chairman of the School of Engineering and Mr. L. C. Cooper of Canadian Car. O Assistant Professor D. Roddy of the School of Engineering has received a $2,500 National Research Council grant towards a research project concerning the optical properties of a class of materials known as semi-conductors. MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES An A.M.S. report stated the Lakehead Counci I of Churches had expressed an interest in having Minister -Counsellors on campus. It was pointed out that where Ministers are on campus at other universities, these Ministers are appointed by their own churches, not by the university itself. The problem is not an easy one: To begin with, the student population is growing at a much faster rate than job opportunities: Also there are a limited number of unskilled factory jobs in the Lakehead and other large population centres are too far away for any mobility: Job opportunities, to a great extent, depend on the shipping season: If it is good, more temporary employment is needed: Wages for students average from $1.50 to $3.00 per hour: Students enrol led in forestry, biology, geology and engineering technology have had the least difficulty finding employmentwhile arts students are the hardest to place: ONo job? Organize your own company! Atleast that's what30-40young Lakehead University students have done to guarantee summer employment this year: Under the leadership of third year science student Russel Kwailkowski. the Tree Planters Union was organized this spring to bid on tree-planting contracts: Many of the students were hi red by the Dept: of Lands and Forests last year for the reforestation program: They decided to opt for free enterprise this year, bidding against other private companies on the tree planting contracts given out each year by private companies and the Dept: of Lands and Forests: Last year approximate I y 7,000,000 trees were p I antin Northwestern Ontario.· This year it is estimated that 10,000,000 will be planted: The students a~e paid on a commission basis earning $18-$20 per 1,000 trees. J. Charles in their work involving formulation of policy objectives for developing countries. During this period he prepared a study on "Capital Efficiency in the Developing Economies".
