I Development program commencing January 1967. Lakehead University's proposed developm nt is stage one in a three-stage program up to the year 2010 or to a 10,000 enroll ent level. It is the result of a two-year study by university officials and planning i xperts. 1. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COMPL ~X-Main university building which will house science and technology facilities and administration. 2. PRESENT MAIN BUILDING-This buil ing will be adapted to meet the needs of the greatly expanded arts program. 3. PRESENT UNIVERSITY CENTRE. 4. UNIVERSITY CENTRE ADDITION-Th addition will consist of service areas such as dining rooms, book stores, and oth Jr facilities for student government, vocational guidance, etc. l 5. UNIVERSITY LIBRARY-Three additio ~al stories will be added to the present library, raising its capacity to 400,00 volumes. The library will be the tallest building on campus at six stories. 6. PROPOSED ACADEMIC BUILDING-Ttpis proposed new academic building has not been included in the present program of development. It has been given first priority in Development Plan B. t RESIDENCE-This first 225-bed resi ence will bring the capacity to more than 300 beds. This is a minimum require ent for Lakehead University where 40% of the student body comes from out~ide the Lakehead area . 7. 8. RESIDENCE-This second residence Will be started in 1969. It will have a capacity of 225 beds. 9. ATHLETIC CENTRE-This is a mini f) um requirement athletic centre-gymnasium. An addition has been includev in the building program for 1969. 10. I MAN -MADE LAKE-The lake will be at the centre of the campus. Its creation has been carefully planned with the r ¢gional conservation authorities as an important flood control project for the M~lntyre River. l �a. FROM THE CHANCELLOR ... When I was invited to take an active part in the development program of Lakehead University, it caused me to reflect on an area where I had spent most of my youth and many of my adult years before coming to Ottawa. The Lakehead, for decades thought of as a railhead, is today a thriving community of 100,000 with an additional 150,000 in the surrounding area. When evaluating the significance of Lakehead University one must also look at the Northwestern Region of Ontario, the area which it serves. This Region, a vital factor in our national economy, is rich in natural resources, offering opportunities for industrial expansion that will ultimately benefit everyone. However, it is not sufficient to offer natural resources; we must also be able to offer human resources by way of well trained, highly qualified university graduates and technologists, who can take on a leadership role now and in all future expansion. Too often in the past many of our youth were lost to the Region when they remained down East or out West after completing their university education in those areas. I believe that Lakehead University is already playing a major role in reversing this trend. It is for these reasons, and I am sure others, that Lakehead University warrants your consideration and support so that it can play its part in uplifting our young people, who, in my day, were denied the opportunity of higher education. I commend Lakehead University to you and ask that you give serious consideration to its plans and needs. My very best personal wishes to you all for every success in your endeavors. In addition to this, more than 500 students registered for Summer School last year, plus 800 adults who enrolled in extension courses. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO OUR REGIONAL ECONOMY? Before the founding of Lakehead University in 1963, it is conservatively estimated that at least 500 young people left Northwestern Ontario each year to attend universities in other areas. Since the approximate cost to the parents was $2,000 for each student per year, if can be said that one million dollars was lost to the economy of Northwestern Ontario each year, or ten million dollars from 1953 to 1963. Even more important than the monetary loss was the loss of many of our highly qualified youth who remained to work in those areas where they received their university education. The proposal was approved by Lakehead University's Senate on March 23, 2007. The HBEd (Aboriginal Education) will be the first 4-year honours degree program offered by an Ontario university and the first to focus on critical foundations in Aboriginal education and Aboriginal pedagogy. The program prepares people of Aboriginal ancestry to become teachers with particular expertise to meet the needs of Aboriginal learners. "This is a giant step forward for teacher education, especially Aboriginal teacher education in Ontario," says Dr. Julia O'Sullivan, Dean, Lakehead University Faculty of Education. "Graduates of this program will be highly qualified to teach primary and junior children using culturally relevant approaches and resources, and will have special expertise in early literacy and early numeracy education." "For the past two years, we have worked in consultation with Aboriginal communities to design a program which will reflect the needs of these communities," says Dr. Ethel Gardner, Chair of Aboriginal Education at Lakehead University. "Aboriginal communities want their children to find academic success in education that is culturally relevant to them and responds to their learning needs. Several new courses have been created for the HBEd (Aboriginal Education) which address the issues brought up through our consultation process." "This program provides graduates who will be well-rounded individuals who can teach in a context that is culturally relevant to Aboriginal students," says Goyce Kakegamic, recently retired Deputy Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation. "This program ensures that there will be First Nation teachers available for our schools, and this will help with the success of First Nations students. We are delighted with this development and thank all those who have put much effort and support into this initiative." Students who graduate from this program will have an understanding of culturally appropriate education grounded in Aboriginal philosophies. The goals of NTEP are: • To increase the number of qualified Native teachers available in Ontario through innovative programming; • To prepare teacher candidates to meet the educational needs of Native communities, taking into account such factors as cultural heritage, identity, and language; • To develop the teacher's intimate understanding of Native traditions, psychology, way of life, and language; • To create a learning environment suited to the habits and interests of the Native child; and • To prepare teachers for both elementary and secondary teaching. NTEP provides many new opportunities to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree while concurrently working toward a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree. Students who successfully complete a BA/BEd will be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) who, in tum, will issue a Certificate of Qualification and Registration. Students who wish to pursue other majors are encouraged to consult the NTEP Coordinator. �ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Admission consideration into any of the NTEP concurrent degree programs requires successful completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSO) or equivalent. A minimum of 6 Ontario Academic Courses (OACs) OR 6 Grade 12 U and /or M courses, or equivalent, including OAC English OR Grade 12 U English, with a minimum overall average of 70%. ADULT STUDENT Applicants who are twenty-one years of age in the calendar year of entry, who are residents of Canada, and who have not attended postsecondary institutions for two years prior to their admission, will be considered as adult students. Kinomaagegaamig's Guiding Principles Harold Linklater' s Kinoomaagegaamig contains a student lounge, the NTEP coordinator's office and student resource area. It is named after the Native Teacher Education Program's (NTEP) founding director, Harold Linklater. In 1975, NTEP opened its doors and welcomed the first intake of students. Kinoomaagegaamig aims to offer a safe gathering place guided by the spirit teachings of the grandcestrals, M'Shoomisuk and M'Nookmisuk (Grandfathers and Grandmothers). The four scared medicines welcome the entrance to Harold Linklater's Kinoomaagegaamig and traces of sweetgrass and sage fragrance is evident. KINOOMAAGEGAAMIG means "teaching lodge" or "learning place" in Ojibwe. The name Kinoomaagegaamig was selected after many consultations with fluent Native language speakers, students from various Anishnawbe dialects and qualified language instructors. A consensus was reached and Kinoomaagegaamig was selected. A special naming ceremony was held during 2003 NTEP's orientation week. Where is Kinoomaagegaamig located? Harold Linklater' s Kinoomaagegaamig is located in the Faculty of Education's, Bora Laskin Building (BL 1019). Just look behind the painted door. The painting (as shown on the front cover of this pamphlet) symbolizes the Tree of Knowledge that comes through teaching, and with good teaching comes happiness for all. What does Kinoomaagegaamig provide? One of the many features of Harold Linklater' s Kinoomaagegaamig is the The Resource Study Area. It has a mini resource library which is home to unique books, binders, education curriculum units, videos and resources on Aboriginal education. Resource materials may be signed out on a 2 week lending honour system. A TV and VCR video for education pre-viewing are provided. There are two computers with online access. A printer is also available and NTEP can supply the use of draft paper only. The Kinoomaagegaamig Student Lounge provides a home away from home atmosphere for education students needing a few minutes break. The essential comforts of home are available, mini- fridge, microwave, kettle, coffee club (sign-up), food bank replenished by students, electric frying pan, pots and pans. Leather couches for relaxation and comfort. Telephone use for local calls. It's the perfect place to meet, share, and discuss academic issues with eers. Harold Linklater's Kinoomaagegaamig is guided by good spirits: 1) Respect Self 2) Respect Others 3) Respect Property Young children with supervision are welcome. Kinoomaagegaamig Lounge and Resource area are kept clean and tidy with cooperation by all who use the facility.
