The proposal was approved by Lakehead University's Senate on March 23, 2007. The HBEd (Aboriginal Education) will be the first 4-year honours degree program offered by an Ontario university and the first to focus on critical foundations in Aboriginal education and Aboriginal pedagogy. The program prepares people of Aboriginal ancestry to become teachers with particular expertise to meet the needs of Aboriginal learners. "This is a giant step forward for teacher education, especially Aboriginal teacher education in Ontario," says Dr. Julia O'Sullivan, Dean, Lakehead University Faculty of Education. "Graduates of this program will be highly qualified to teach primary and junior children using culturally relevant approaches and resources, and will have special expertise in early literacy and early numeracy education." "For the past two years, we have worked in consultation with Aboriginal communities to design a program which will reflect the needs of these communities," says Dr. Ethel Gardner, Chair of Aboriginal Education at Lakehead University. "Aboriginal communities want their children to find academic success in education that is culturally relevant to them and responds to their learning needs. Several new courses have been created for the HBEd (Aboriginal Education) which address the issues brought up through our consultation process." "This program provides graduates who will be well-rounded individuals who can teach in a context that is culturally relevant to Aboriginal students," says Goyce Kakegamic, recently retired Deputy Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation. "This program ensures that there will be First Nation teachers available for our schools, and this will help with the success of First Nations students. We are delighted with this development and thank all those who have put much effort and support into this initiative." Students who graduate from this program will have an understanding of culturally appropriate education grounded in Aboriginal philosophies. Kinomaagegaamig's Guiding Principles Harold Linklater' s Kinoomaagegaamig contains a student lounge, the NTEP coordinator's office and student resource area. It is named after the Native Teacher Education Program's (NTEP) founding director, Harold Linklater. In 1975, NTEP opened its doors and welcomed the first intake of students. Kinoomaagegaamig aims to offer a safe gathering place guided by the spirit teachings of the grandcestrals, M'Shoomisuk and M'Nookmisuk (Grandfathers and Grandmothers). The four scared medicines welcome the entrance to Harold Linklater's Kinoomaagegaamig and traces of sweetgrass and sage fragrance is evident. KINOOMAAGEGAAMIG means "teaching lodge" or "learning place" in Ojibwe. The name Kinoomaagegaamig was selected after many consultations with fluent Native language speakers, students from various Anishnawbe dialects and qualified language instructors. A consensus was reached and Kinoomaagegaamig was selected. A special naming ceremony was held during 2003 NTEP's orientation week. Where is Kinoomaagegaamig located? Harold Linklater' s Kinoomaagegaamig is located in the Faculty of Education's, Bora Laskin Building (BL 1019). Just look behind the painted door. The painting (as shown on the front cover of this pamphlet) symbolizes the Tree of Knowledge that comes through teaching, and with good teaching comes happiness for all. What does Kinoomaagegaamig provide? One of the many features of Harold Linklater' s Kinoomaagegaamig is the The Resource Study Area. It has a mini resource library which is home to unique books, binders, education curriculum units, videos and resources on Aboriginal education. Resource materials may be signed out on a 2 week lending honour system. A TV and VCR video for education pre-viewing are provided. There are two computers with online access. A printer is also available and NTEP can supply the use of draft paper only. The Kinoomaagegaamig Student Lounge provides a home away from home atmosphere for education students needing a few minutes break. The essential comforts of home are available, mini- fridge, microwave, kettle, coffee club (sign-up), food bank replenished by students, electric frying pan, pots and pans. Leather couches for relaxation and comfort. Telephone use for local calls. It's the perfect place to meet, share, and discuss academic issues with eers. Harold Linklater's Kinoomaagegaamig is guided by good spirits: 1) Respect Self 2) Respect Others 3) Respect Property Young children with supervision are welcome. NATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHER CERTIFICATION (NLTC) - A three summer program; training in teaching Native as a second language to students whose first language is English. -- --..;:__ ~-= •""'""'~---~ Lakehead UNIVERSITY - ..-- �THE PROGRAM The Certification Program is designed for individuals who want to teach a Native Language as a second language in a primary or secondary school. It focuses on developing skills required for second language teaching. The curriculum is designed for students who enter the program with an Algonquian language background. ADMISSION Applicants must: *speak an Algonquian language; *meet Lakehead University entrance requirements. A Certificate of Qualification (restricted) in NLTC is issued by the Ontario College of Teachers upon successful completion of each year. NLTC student graduates wishing to enter the fourth year of the NASL diploma program may do so providing that they complete all the NLIP requirements. COMPONENTS In order to qualify for the Certificate of Qualification (restricted), a student will be required to complete successfully all three half-courses in each of the following: 1. Algonquian - Introduction to literacy in Native Language, practice in reading and writing, curriculum materials and understanding of language structures. 2. Methodology - Methods of second language teaching, planning, use of curriculum guidelines, classroom activities, evaluation, and materials production. 3. Pedagogy - A survey of teacher ethics, classroom management skills, record keeping and planning. An examination of characteristics of children. Identification and solutions to common problems facing Native language teachers. An examination of bilingual education, strengths, weaknesses, problems, and opportunities. 4. Practicum - Students become familiar with Ministry of Education documents, plan for instruction, classroom observation and teaching experiences in Native language classes with children aged five to sixteen. Participate in workshops that provide activities and resources for the classroom. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 3. GENERAL EDUCATION - PEDAGOGY 1. ALGONQUIAN COURSES ED 1571 - Introduction to Teaching A survey of teacher ethics, classroom management skills, record keeping and planning procedures, with special attention to the relationship of core language teachers to the total school experience. Identification and use of standard classroom materials and equipment will form part of the course. AL 1212 - Oral Algonqulan Part I Prerequisite: Fluency in an Algonquian Language. An introduction to the analysis of spoken Algonquian Languages and orthographic principles, through the study of examples from the various Algonquian Languages represented by other class members. AL 1232 - Oral Algonquian Part II Prerequisite: Algonquian 1212 Structural study of the Algonquian languages with emphasis on conversation patterns. Students will also read selected texts and participate in selected activities requiring a standard orthography. AL 2213 - Oral Algonquian Part Ill Prerequisite: Algonquian 1212 & 1232 Continuation study of Algonquian Language structure, with students assuming increasing responsibility for independent analysis of speech patterns. Application of orthographic principles in proofreading and correcting of unedited text. 2. SECOND LANGUAGE METHODS ED 1351 - NASL Methods Part I An introduction to the general principles of second language teaching, stressing development of listening comprehension and speaking skills. Structural and communicative approaches will focus at the lesson level. Micro-teaching will provide practice in the teaching methods under study. ED 1352 - NASL Methods Part II A continuation of the topics of Part I, with the focus broadened to the unit level. The practicum will encourage originally within the bounds of second language teaching criteria, in the preparation of teaching units. ED 1353 - NASL Methods Part Ill Consolidation and extension of the principles and techniques presented in Parts I and II with emphasis on reading and writing skills and the relation of the NASL program to the school and community. Focus will be on planning a full year's program. ED 1572 - The Development of the Chlld An examination of the physical, mental and emotional characteristics of children and youth through elementary and secondary school years, with emphasis on the implications of language teacher interactions. The practicum will entail production of language teaching material suitable to each age group. ED 1573 - Current Issues In (Native) Language Education Background for this course will be laid by surveying the policies of educational agencies and professional organizations, the regulations of the Ontario Ministry of Education and other sources of help for the language teacher. Students will identify common problems facing language teachers and identify appropriate solutions to these problems. 4. STUDENT TEACHING - PRACTICUM ED 0190, 0290, 0390 - Practicum Students participate in an on-campus student teaching experience; develop lesson, unit, and long range plans; attend presentations pertaining to the professional life of a teacher; and attend two workshops. �NLIP RESIDENCE Townhouses are set aside each summer for the use of Native Language students. The residence provides an atmosphere conducive to serious study and encourages the use of the Native Language to the greatest extent. Parents are responsible for children in the residence community and on campus. Children under the age of sixteen years must be supervised at all times. CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS Classes in Native as a second language are available to children five to sixteen years of age. A Cultural Program is available at a small cost to parents. STUDENT SUPPORT WORKERS Student Support Workers are available to students during the day and evening. The support workers provide academic, social, personal, and cultural support. Paterson Chairman, Development Council �Our Programs Lakehead University's innovative curriculum offers our undergraduates and graduate students many career alternatives, with programs in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, fine arts, education, business administration, engineering, forestry, library technology, nursing, outdoor recreation and physical education. Many of these programs have a regional emphasis that combines formal classroom instruction with the natural laboratories of the Canadian Shield. As a smaller University, our highly qualified professors are readily available for guidance and counselling on a one-to-one basis. " Our Beginnings Lakehead University evolved from the Lakehead Technical Institute which was established in 1946. In 19 56 the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology was created by an A ct of the Ontario Legislature and a year later, it moved to its present site, donated by the former City of Port Arthur. As time passed, the College expanded in response to escalating enrolment; courses were added to the curriculum and the College was empowered to confer university degrees in arts and sciences. The first degrees were granted on May 6, 196 5. The Lake head University A ct was given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario on June 22, 196 5 and came into force July 1 of that year. The Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology became Lakehead University. Its mandate includes a special concern for the unique needs of the region's population as well as those who come to us from across Canada. The growing reputation of the University's excellence has created a need for additional equipment, testing facilities, physical space, and research funding. In recent years, government grants to all post-secondary institutions have not kept pace with inflation and the growth of enrolment. It has become extremely important to augment this shortfall with gifts from the private sector. In concert with this solicitation, 19 83-84 marked the beginning of an Alumni Annual Fund. Your support in partnership with Lakehead University will truly be an investment in its future. Academic Development New developments in every academic discipline demand that teachers and researchers strive to keep current in their related areas of expertise through publication of their work and participation in conjer enc es and seminars. The fresh perspectives thus gained are passed on to colleagues and students. Additional sources that provide appropriate funding for these programs are required. The f acuity and students of Lakehead University undertake numerous projects each year in the public and private sectors of industry. Much of the research done at the University has implications both provincially and nationally. Some of the projects deal with the unique problems encountered in the northern regions of Ontario. In response to this need, Lakehead University and the Province of Ontario recently established Innovation North through which faculty members from many departments work together on such projects. To fully meet these commitments, Lakehead University is soliciting supplementary financing to provide for needed academic and research support equipment. �Library The Chancellor Paterson Library is the academic heart of Lakehead University that provides program support to students and f acuity. At the same time, the Library reaches out to serve the University's Of!-Campus program and the citizens of the Thunder Bay area. The Library is creating a computerized database of its catalogue. The transition from catalogue cards to electronic technology is expensive, but the benefits are great in both service and long-term cost of operations. To obtain this objective, significant capital outlay is required, which cannot be fully financed from operating funds. The Library has the only research collection in the rfgion and must keep current with the rapid advances of knowledge and technology. At a time when the demand for information is increasing, the cost of this information, (books, periodicals, and other materials), is increasing too. In order to continue to serve the University community and the greater community which surrounds it in a meaningful way, collections must be expanded and technology constantly updated. Present funding allocations are such that supplementary financing must be sought. Computer In this age of electronic technology, the quality of computer services is fundamental in maintaining contemporary instructional, research and administrative activities. Lakehead University's computer services ha·ve expanded dramatically to fulfill this critical and central function. Over time, further expansion and continued up-grading requirements will place a heavy demand on capital resources, thus competing with and threatening financial allocations to other important University functions. Financial support, in addition to normal University funding, is solicited to maintain this essential program. Space Development and Fabric Renewal Significant growth and greater technological content of several academic programs at Lakehead University have resulted in additional allocations beyond the dedicated spaces. A recently completed comprehensive space allocation study has identified ways by which present program requirements can be consolidated and accommodated within the total available space. A one-time capital outlay will be required to make the associated physical changes. Many years of inadequate funding has made the refurbishing of the University's furniture a necessity. To provide for these needs and the implementation of the recommendations of the space allocation study, new financing is required to supplement traditional funding. Instructional Services The instructional support services required to maintain acceptable communication levels in all phases of the educational process at the University has placed a demand on aged and inadequate equipment inventories to the point where selected resource renewal and capability upgrading has become a necessity. At a time when financial resources are severely restricting program development, additional funds are required to meet this real need. Student A id and Service A comprehensive ongoing student financial assistance and counselling program is required at Lakehead University. The need for financial assistance has become particularly evident as student summer employment opportunities have declined significantly in tlze past several years. In a complex modern world, the need for professional counselling has never been greater. Because of the limitation of available funds, the University is unable to satisfy all the requests for financial and counselling assistance. A program that wi/1 provide a suitable counselling service, bursaries for needy students, and scholarships for those with outstanding academic and leadership qualifications, would be an initial step towards establishing a partnership between our students and the Canadian business community. �Serving Our Region Lakehead University is a major educational and cultural resource. In addition to the formal programs which the University offers, f acuity and staff provide consulting and counselling services not available elsewhere in the region. Playing a leading role in a wide variety of activities as volunteers in cultural, municipal, religious, social and other projects, they make a significant contribution to the benefit of our community. Many organizations hold workshops and regular meetings on campus. Our library is available without charge to area residents for study and research, while the C. f. Sanders Fieldhouse facilities are available for squash, swimming, or other activities at a nominal charge. During the summer months, the University hosts conjer enc es from across the country. Cultural events such as live theatre, recitals, art exhibits, concerts and workshops are held throughout the year and attract a large number of individuals from Thunder Bay and beyond. Academic Excellence: Lakehead University's annual budget is in excess of $30 million and has a substantial impact on its surrounding community. As one of the area's largest employers, its 1,100 full-time and part-time staff generate a monthly payroll of $1. 6 million, most of which is spent locally on goods and services. In addition, some 1,800 full-time students from outside Thunder Bay generate more than $8. 5 million annually to the local economy. Leadership and excellence are not sometimes things. They are developed through the intellectual and moral growth that are provided in ~igher education. Rosehart, President The role that Lakehead University plays in the Canadian post-secondary education system and its present respected stature did not just happen. It has taken decades of hard work and a combination of vision, faith and the financial support of countless individuals, corporations and foundations, who have all demonstrated a steadfast belief in the University. 1990 marked the 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary celebration of Lakehead's achievement in education and research. The imprints of change that have been made possible by the generosity of many individuals are visible in the legacy of buildings that have, in part, resulted from their caring and willingness to share in our vision. Located in Thunder Bay, Lakehead University undertakes many innovative programs and research projects that have been designed to take advantage of the natural laboratories of Northwestern Ontario: forestry, geology, biology, geography and outdoor recreation, to name a few. As a smaller University, our highly qualified professors are readily available to provide guidance and counselling on a oneto-one basis. This has fostered a warm and productive atmosphere that is conducive to learning and research. ' t Because of our technical education roots, many of our programs touch students from all parts of Canada. Lakehead University has long been recognized as one of the most progressive Canadian universities in providing opportunities for community college graduates to further their education to the undergraduate degree level. We have specialized access programs in engineering, forestry, business administration, nursing and social work in this regard. The University has a special mandate which strives in a proactive way to participate in the development of Northwestern Ontario. Weekly our professors travel hundreds of kilometres to teach in 16 regional centres. Through our Centre for Northern Studies, The Centre for Entrepreneurship and our Innovation Centre, we strive to assist in the region's evolution. In order to further research in sports medicine and sports science, major equipment purchases are an ongoing requirement.
