LaKehead University , Campus Notes Seot.18, 1970. Volume 3, No. 2 Board of Governors On . Wednesday, September 17, the President Dr, W. G. Tamblyn, reported to a meeting of the Bo'ard of Governors on the latest developments in the Clp;rent situation affecting the capital expansion prog,ram of Lakehead University. Capital Projects at Ontario universities are financed primarily through Government funds, which are distributed by means of a formula based on student enrolment. Lakehead University's enrolment justi­ fied the expansion of its physical resources at this time, and planning had proceeded for the construc­ tion 'of a Library extension, a new Academic Build­ ing, an addition to the present athletic complex, and an extension to the University's Power House. All of these projects had been approved by the Board of Governors.· After the question of possible course duplication in the two institutions of post-secondary education in Northwestern Ontario was raised in the press and in the Provincial Legislature, the Government appointed a specia1 sub-committee of the Commission on Post­ Secondary Education in Ontario to examine the sit­ uation. In April 1970 this subcommittee visited Lake­ head University and Confederation College of Ap­ plied Arts and Technology. At that time, the Univer­ sity presented a brief to the Commission detailing its position concerning the continuation of specified diploqia programs at this institution. In 11:tte July of this year the University was informed by the Department of University Affairs that no approval would be given to its Capital Projects by the Department, pending the handing down of the teport of the Commission. In order for these required facilities to be ready when• needed, construction must begin shortly on sorri·� ''.of� tAe' buildings. In a letter to the Deputy Minister ·of University Affairs, Dr. Tamblyn ex­ plained the gravity of the situation, expressed con­ cern about the delay, and asked for early approval of the j;frojects in question. On T\iesday, 15 September, Dr. Tamblyn and four members of the Board of Governors met with the Minister in Toronto and again presented the case on behalf of the University. The Minister promised University officials that the preliminary report of the Commission would be available by October 5th, and that a final settlement of the situation would be reached by October 15th. ' The· President reported to the Board that this delay in construction would be serious but not disastrous. . : ..; In other developments at Wed.'s meeting, the Board of Governors confirmed the awarding of a contract for the extension of the Power House to Stead and Lindstrom Construction Limited. In spite of the difficulties of the present situation it was felt to be essential to proceed with construction of the facility immediately. The University has made a commitmen,t to provide services to the new Re­ gional School of Nursing on the campus and could not meet that commitment without the extension. The Board also authorized the preparation of plans wr th.e 2nd phase of the Athletic Building extension. ,,., J. P. Ryder, Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, will appear on C.K.P.R. Television Wednesday, September 23, 1970, at 8 p.m. Dr. Ryder will participate in the program entitled "The Geese of Canada", and will describe some of the ecology of Ross's Goose, which is the rar­ est and smallest wild foul species in North America. Mr. J. Haggerty, Chairman of the School of Forestry, has received a letter from Mr. J. E. Bothwell, Timberlands Manager of Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd. During the 69-70 academic year the School of Forestry held a lecture series featuring Mr. Hans Lindberg from Sweden. This was sponsored by a grant of $1,000.00 from the Weyerhaeuser Founda­ tion. Mr. Bothwell noted that they were very im­ pressed with the lectures and enclosed a cheque for another $1,000.00 allowing the School of For­ estry to hold a symposium or some silimar func­ tion pertaining to forestry methods. Dr. J. D. Rabb has been appointed Assistant Pro­ fessor, Department of Philosophy. "Camus Exhibit" The first of a series of exhibitions concerning French Culture, arranged by the Language Depart­ ment was presented in the Aesthetics Gallery this past week. The exhibition consisted of more than 100 photographs, documents and texts representing the life and works of Albert Camus; Nobel Prize winning novelist, dramatist and essayist. The series (available through the aid of the French Embassy in Ottawa), is intended to cover Ap­ ollinaire, French Cathedrals and other topics chosen specifically to coincide with the studies of University French majors, but they also may be of interest to students of thought and literature. Dean Ryan announced the following appointments in the Faculty of Arts office: Miss Marsha Buchik Research and Grants Officer and Mrs. Diane Kelsey, Secretary to the Dean. Both will endeavour to assist you in any way pos­ sible, and can be reached at extension 201. C.U.G.O. Chairman W. J. Hanley urges members of the University community to present their briefs and opinions as soon as possible, (but not later than November 16, 1970). The commission has yet to name a research assistant, however Mr. Hanley expected the incumbent will be on hand early in October. The first gen­ eral meeting will be held Wednesday, September 30, 1970 in the Faculty Lo·unge. �Miss Purity Special Senate Meeting People are doing a lot of talking about pollution the§e days, but very few seem to be taking constructive steps to stop it. There are exceptions. and "Miss Purity" was not just the exception, but the exceptional. "Miss Purity" was the University of Toronto's entry in the MIT/CALTECH Clean Air Race which was held August 24th to 30th, 1970. She placed first in her class, and in the top 5 overall. At a special meeting of the Lakehead University Senate on Monday, September 14, 1970 a motion was passed ratifying the proposal by the Committee of Presidents of Universities of Ontario to establish an Advisory Sub-committee on Academic Planning. Senate strongly recommended that· the smaller universities, as defined by C.P.U.O. be represented on this committee as they have special problems relating to their growth. The Senate also discussed President Tamblyn's letter to the Deputy Minister of University Affairs concerning the situation affecting the capital expansion projects at Lakehead University. The crew decided that while on their return trip, they would stop off at the Canadian Universities they came to, to promote their ideas. They wheeled into Lakehead University on Monday September 14, for a short while to talk to students. Doug Venn, one of the trio of drivers from. the event, and a student at the University of Toronto, said, "These University stops were a last minute decision, but we felt a necessary one, in that it was an ideal opportunity to present our ideas to people that could ultimately do something with them." As presently constructed, the car uses basically a propane-fuelled LC. engine drive, but can operate electrically on batteries, as a hybrid, and on combined propane/ battery power. The vehicle can be readily converted to gasoline for ft:J.ture studies, when the electric hybrid system will be of even greater value. Student Radio Student Radio has arrived in Thunder Bay. Although the A.M.S. is now looking after the preliminaries. A production, in the future, the spot will be available to all segments of the University. C.K.P.R. 580 am has tentati vely offered a half hour slot on Wednesdays between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. The initial programs are to be of a general informative nature, however, it is hoped that eventually the discussions will turn to specific current issues. L. U. programming is still in the organizing stages and people are needed for production, announcing, reporting, etc. All interested persons are asked to contact either Art Looye, producer, or Mike Metherell vice-president of programming. They may be reached in room 1009A in the University Centre or by phone at 345-2121, extension 553 or 259. Research & Grants Office Tim Ryan, Dean of Arts, announced this week, the establishment of the Research and Grants Office. The areas of concern of the Faculty's Officer, Miss Marsha Buchik, are: the relation of the Universii,J' to granting agencies; the councelling of professors as to the existence and availability of research funds; and at.her matters. There is a detailed calendar of Granting Agencies for research funds available at the office. The Research and Grants Office is located in the Dean of Arts office and the telephone extension is 201. Weekly Events "Miss Purity" On the cross Canada jaunt, back to University of Toronto, they are using propane and are getting an admirable 16 miles per gallon. They can go 250 miles on a tank. Doug was asked if he had any problems with the low temperatures here in Northwestern Ontario due to our recent cold spell. He stated, "The car had no problems, but the drivers sure did. Because the race was run through the Midwest States, and warmer areas, we did not install a heater, consequently we almost froze the last few nights .without one." Drivers Steve Baker, Juri Ostason and Doug Venn, along with Simon Ng, engineer, Al Venn, special promotions, Ontario Government, and Professor I. W. Smith of University of Toronto were all part of the team that stopped at L.U. They said that the car took about six months to finish and that they were aided by two donations from the estates of two University of Toronto professors, each exceeding $10,000.00 and by financial and material contributions from many individuals and companies. The team members and "Miss Purity" will be taking part in further experimentations and research to further the fight against air pollution. On parting, they asked "What are you doing about it?" SPECIAL SENATE MEETING A special meeting of the Lakehead University Senate has been called for Monday, Sept­ ember 14, 1970, at 12:00 noon in the Senate Chambers. The meeting will consider ratification of the establishment by the Committee of Presidents of Universities of Ontario of an Advisory Subcommittee on Aca­ demic Planning. The function of the proposed Subcommittee is to conduct Discipline Assess­ ments, "formal reviews of cur­ rent and projected graduate and/or undergraduate programs within discipline groups," at the fourteen provincially - assisted Ontario universities. Senate will also consider a letter from the President of Lakehead University to the Deputy Minister of University Affairs concerning the recent decision by the Department to withhold approval of current Capital Projects at the Uni­ versity, pending the report of the Commission on Post - Secondary Education. The Commission's re­ port, dealing with the status of post - secondary education in Northwestern Ontario, is not ex­ pected until later in the Fall. Senate meetings at Lake­ head University are open to ticket - holders. Tickets may be obtained in the office of the Secretary of the Senate, Mr. D. E. Ayre. FACULTY OF ARTS SEMINAR ON SURVIVA'L Contrary to opm10n, stu­ dents- who fail at . University (50% of those entering accor­ ding to a recent report) do not fail because of lack of talent or intelligence; they fail simply be­ cause they do not know how to apply themselves or how to study. Thus, the Seminar has two Main objectives: To motivate the student and give him assistance on how to motivate himself. To introduce him to the. study skills: • reading, listening, scheduling, taking of examina­ tions, using the library, and writing essays and papers. This seminar will be held the week of the 19th of October at 8:00 p.m. each evening. There will be no costs, however, there is a recommended text; On Becoming an Educated Person, by Virginia Voeks (W. B. Saun­ ders Company, $2.20). REGISTRATION 1970 PARKING AUTHORITY A meeting of the University Committee on Wednesday, Sept­ ember 2, 1970, approved the establishment of a Parking Auth­ ority for Lakehead University. The Parking Authority will be responsible for all parking lots on campus, will formulate and enforce regulations, and will determine and collect parking fees. President Tamblyn explain­ ed to members of the Committee that the Provincial Government had discontinued its financial support for the operation and construction of university park­ ing facilities. It has therefore become necessary to charge all members of the University community for parking privil­ eges. The Parking Authority will consist of three student mem­ bers, three faculty members, and three administration mem­ bers. Selection of members by the A.M.S., L.U.F.A., and the Administration should be com­ pleted by the end of the month, with details on parking regu­ lations and fees to be announ­ ced sometime thereafter. Meeting Cham. �COMMISSION ON UNIVERSITY GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION The cotnmission on University Governmental Organization has been appointed to: "critic~lly examine the existing governmental organization of the University and the functional interrelationships of its component parts, including the Board of Governors, the Senate, the Alma Mater Society, the Alumni Association, the Faculties, the academic departments and the administrative offices and departments in so far as they relate to these bodies. In light of this study, the Commission shall make recommendations concerning the governmental organization which is most appropriate in order to best serve the interests of the University as a whole. The Commission shall also outline revisions to the Lakehead University Act which would be made necessary by the adoption of its recommendations. These recommendations shall be embodied in a report to the President of the University." In order to accomplish this task the Commission is earnestly soliciting opinions on Lakehead University governance from all concerned. Accordingly the Commission would appreciate the expression of your thoughts by way of a written brief, supported by an open hearing if you so desire. Below is a preliminary list of issues to which you may wish to address yourself either in whole or in part. The issues and questions are intended only to provide guidance and a framework for the collection and analysis of opinion, information and evidence; in no way should you . feel restricted to the subject headings or queries. Again, on behalf of the Commission and in the interests of th~ University, its members and the community, I urge you to present your views as soon a~ possible (but not later than November 16. 1970) on these critical topics. Should this university seek a unique educa- tional posture specifically attuned to its environment, play a broad, general role in meeting the educational needs of the population, or embrace certain combinations of these approaches? What is the nature of the university's commitment to the community, to its members, to education? Should size and physical location influence the purpose of the university and the manner in which it is governed? How are the purposes of the institution related to its governance? What estates exist within the university to serve its purposes, how are they precisely defined, and what stakes does each have in institutional governance? 2. Governing Bodies - Senate and Board of Governors What is your perception of the existing structure and its effectiveness? What changes (if any) should be made in the functions, powers and responsibilities of these bodies? How should they be constituted and selected? How should they relate and interact with each other? What structural alternatives (if any) would you recommend, and why? What would be the relationship between governing bodies and the President and/ or other administrators? What committees should exist and what powers should they exercise? 3. Faculty, Students and Others What should be the respective roles • and responsibilities of individual faculty, students and others in university government? What parts should each play in governing bodies, committees, etc? Should representation of each in committees be fixed and uniform, or flexible according to purpose? Should any estate be deliberately excluded from official university bodies or committees? Should academic rank or tenure be taken into account in the holding of office on a governing body or committee, or in holding a franchise for election thereto? Should student 'seniority' be taken into account for the same purposes? 4. President, Vice - President Deans, Chairmen What should be their roles and responsibilities in the university? What parts should they play in the decision-mak.i ng processes? How should appointments be made? What relationships should exist between administrators and governing bodies, colleagues, academics, students, ai;ademic service staff, etc.? In short, how should the day-to- day work of the university be determined and execut~d? 5. Student Councils, Faculty Associations and Other Groups What should be the functions and responsibilities of these bodies vis-a-vis the governing bodies, the President and other administrators, their constituents? Should they play a more direct role in the structure of university government? DEPARTMENT NEWS Political Science Dr. G. F. Engholm, Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Political Science, is attending the Annual Conference of the American Political Science Association in Los Angeles, September 8th to 12th where he will present a paper entitled "Representation and Policy". Dr. Pradip Sarbadhikari, Associate Professor of Political Science presented a paper entitled "Towards a Study of Social Movements in a Typology of International Theories" to the VIIIth World Congress of the International Political Science Association held at Munich, Germany, between September 1st and 5th. Also attending was Mr. A. M. Macleod, Lecturer in the department. Psychology Mr. John Jamieson has been appointed as Lecturer, Department of Psychology. Computer Centre. Mr. Guy S. Davis has been appointed Faculty Advisor/Programmer. English Department Mr. John Rosenman has been appointed as Assistant Professor, Department of English. Business Administration Mr. E. Don Evans, Susan Sauvage and Donna Pierce spent the last few weeks travelling to outlying towns in Northwestern Ontario to speak with students who will be entering their first year at the University this fall, and their parents. Registration, off-campus housing, residence living, student awards and social events were some of the subjects covered in the counselling sessions. The purpose of these sessions was to let the younger people know what to expect when they arrive at Lakehead University in order to eliminate some of the confusion during their first week ortwo. Approximately 90 young people - actors, designers, musicians and dancers - from across Ontario are included in the company which is presently making a 3,000 mile tour of the province with this production. The play was especially written for them by G. V. Galwey and it deals with the self-destruction of man through the misuse of power on the one hand, and the blinding effects of greed on the other, both stemming from man's inability to understand his basic needs or to put them into perspective. Tickets for the production are $1 for students and $2 for adults. They are available at the University Bookstore and the AMS Office. "Babel" begins at 8:30 p.m. each night. Klissurski, an eminant European scientist, will be spending one year at Lakehead Universitv to associate himself with the research studies of Dr. Ross, Dean of Science, in surface chemistry. He will arrive at the university in September. Dr. Klissurski is a senior Research Fellow in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia. He has published three books and more than 30 papers in heterogeneous catalysis and adsorption in recent years and he has delivered papers at international conferences in Germany, Rumania, Italy, Russia and Britain, as well as his own country. He speaks fluently in French, Russian, English and the Slavic languages. While at Lakehead, Dr. Klissurski will also visit the University of Ottawa, McMastt>r University and the National RPsearch Council to meet Canadian scientists working in his area of study. Her new duties will include continuous touring throughout the Maritime Provinces with the Orchestra. Well known pianist Douglas Dahlgren has been appointed Musician-in-Residence at the University. His duties will include the instruction of musical theory and appreciation as part of the Faculty of Arts Humanistic Studies series in addition to the organization of a series of public concerts at the university and other locations in the community. McLeod, recently announced the appointment of 12 Residence Assistants for the coming academic year. "This is in keeping with the concept of the Residence which is student financed and, to a great extent, operated under student government in the form of the Residence Council." Since this is the first year that all of the residence houses are complete for the beginning of the new fall term, it is also the first time that the full number of Residence Assistents has been appointed. Applications for the positions of . Residence Assistants were circulated throughout the University last January. The 12 applicants who were accepted were chosen because of their experience in residence living, maturity and proven leadership abilities. Each Residence Assistant will be responsible for the life of approximately 48 students in Residence students are allowed helpings of food in their cafeteria. unlimited his House. He will be required to give them leadership in formulating their plans for the operation of the House; assist them in setting up activities and committees for the benefit of all students within the Residence and offer counselling and guidance, especially to first year students, in academic, social and personal problems. In addition each Assistant will have a responsibility in one specific area in the overall residence operation. More Student Involvement in Residence Operation Since the operating expenses of the Residence are completely covered by the fees from regular and summer session students, in addition to income from conferences and temporary accommodations, it is only fitting that students should be involved in the administration of these funds and the organization of residence living. An example of this involvement occured last spring when members of the Food Committee of the Residence Council participated in the food contract negotiations. The income from fees must meet all costs of mortgage payments, maintenance and housekeeping, food services and administrative costs. It is the University's policy to set these fees so that the Residence does not run at a loss - nor does it make a profit. Mr. McLeod and his assistants are hopeful that student participation in the operation of the Residence will increase through the workings of the Residence Council and its various committees. The Commission held its initial meeting on July 13, 1970 and among its first actions wasl the election of Bill Hanley (Associate Professor, School of Business Administration) to the position of Chairman. Members of CUGO also agreed that the services of a full-time secretary/researcher were required. The position would ideally suit a graduate student who is looking for a year of practical research and writing. Anyone with a knowledge of the philosophy and literature of higher education and of university governmental structures, who may be interested in such a challenge, is invited to contact the Chairman for further information. CUGO will invite organizations and individuals, both from inside and from outside the University community, to submit written briefs. Although procedures have not yet been finalized, the Commission will be holding hearings to discuss these briefs. In the course of the study members of the Commission will also examine the governmental structures of other universities and colleges. Professor Hanley expressed his optimism concerning the final outcome of the Commission's deliberations, but noted that similar experiences at other institutions show that the process of self-examination is usually long, arduous, and occasionally W. HANLEY painful. eA group disguised as the 'Non-Such Players' will stage excerpts from four Shakespearean plays in the University Centre Theatre on Aug. 4, 5 and 6. In real life, the actors are all members of the summer Shakespeare Seminar and Theatre Workl:ihop. They have built a "stage within a stage" to recreate an old Shakespearean Theatre atmosphere. Their productions will include two pieces from Richard Ill, an excerpt from Twelfth Night, the witches' scene from Macbeth and an extremely humorous portion of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The goal of the Commission is to produce a report on its findings which will also contain recommendations concerning ways and means of improving the organization in order to best serve the interests of the University as a whole. CUGO was originally established on the recommendation of Senate at its November 29, 1969 meeting, though its terms of reference and membership were not approved until May of this year. He will be concerned mainly with the presentation of off-campus geography courses under the Extension program. eMr. Claude E. Garton, curator of the Claude E. Garton Herbarium at Lakehead University recently announced that the nu~ber of plant sheets constituting the collection now exceeds 21,000. The collection is composed mainly of boreal plants 'but includes many temperate ;species as well. Specimens are .exchanged regularly with otl?,er institutions in North Amenca and Europe. Recently a total of ,3 084 exchange plants were sent tt>: University of Helsinki; Plant Research Institute, Canada Department of Agriculture; Univeri sity of Michigan; National Mus1 eum Ottawa· University of Sherbroo'ke; and Academy of Sciences, Leningrad. Plants from regions around Lake Superior and Thunder Bay are constantly being added to the collection as a result of a collecting program. The busiest studio has proved to be Stoneware and Pottery, headed by Jerry Ashby and located in the basement of "B" House, Men's Residence. The Drama group, headed by Frank Serio from Toronto, is very popular with its study . of 'life theatre' and the Comedia de l' Arte created and enacted daily by the participants. The Sculpture studio, headed by Peter Lenardon, is ~rogressing through a profus10n of dust, salt, stones, and plaster to many interesting, creativeartforms. The painting and drawing studio is presenting lectures on Colour, Theory and Composition. Hours and arrangements for special topics can be arranged through the instructors, Steve Elkerton and Mike LaBelle. The Craft Studio, in the charge of Sharlene Ticknor, 1?,as finished its Macrome sess10n and begins tye dye on Monday, July 20. The Print Studio is presently working on Silk-screen techniques with several participants in_volved _with orga~izing and 1llustratmg an ammated cartoon series. Free film features' •are presented twice each we~k day in Room 1029, Mam Building, at 2 and 8 .p.m. A schedule is posted on the main bulletin board, now locat. ed in the Great Hall. · The music workshop, headed by Bill Gabourie from Peterborough is established and offers ~lementary guitar lessons, organ and piano theory, composition and arrangement theory as well as the opp?r.tunity for advanced musicians to 'jam' with each other. The co-ordinators are looking forward as more and more people come in every day, both to look and to participate. Parents are invited to attend the same classes as their children. The trip has been re-scheduled for the weekend of July 18 this year instead of July 25, as previously announced. "The Tempest" will play . on Saturday evening, July 18 and a second performance of "The Venetian Twins" will be available to Thunder Bay residents, on Saturday afternoon. SUMMER OF ART, POP CONCERTS, PLANNED FOR FREE* NORTH FESTIVAL ein case you're wondering what that red and green and white and yellow and blue and orange thing was that passed you, here's the first clue: it belongs to the co-ordinators of the FREE NORTH FESTIVAL. Surely, you've heard of that. The Festival begins on Monday, July 6 and will include eight weeks of workshops in all types of art from painting and pottery to photography and drama. The FREE NORTH FESTIVAL was organized by four ambitious young university students, shown in the photograph (right). They are: Charles Sharun (left); Barb Williams (centre); Clint Kushak; and Peter Lenardan (right). Included in the picture is Kathy McGovern who has been looking after some of the reams of paper work involved in organizing a program of this size. Engholm, Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Political Science has been awarded a Canada Council Grant of $1834 to enable him to consult the Public Records Office in London, England, and obtain addi- RYAN tional material in the preparation of his book "Immigrant influence on the development of policy in Uganda Protectorate 1900-1952", which is to be published by the Clarendon Press of Oxford. Mr. McEwan, Director of the University Computer Centre, and Mr. Watson, Assistant Director, Academic Services, were recently invited to participate in a conference on System Applications, Implementations anct .l!.;xtensions of A.P.L., the relatively new computer language whose use is fast expanding in universities, business and engineering, at Goddard Space Flight Centre, Maryland. Mr. Watson presented their joint paper on suggested changes to improve the consistency of the language. �·--•tGf JUse Olly FACULTY OF SCIENCE TO OFFER COURSE FOR ARTS STUDENTS eA new physics course desi~ned specifically for nonscience students will be offered at Lakehead University this fall. ,, The course is entitled Contemporary Physical Thought" and it will be available as an option to Arts students in any year without prerequisites. Dr. Hastings, one of the innovators of the new course, commented on the reasons for developing a physics course of this type: "Students today place more emphasis on social thought than ever before. They believe it relevant to study about man and his role in society and they tend to shy away from science which they consider too technical and rigid. Our modern problems, such as pollution and increasing technocracy, have a more direct influence on society now than ever before." he said. "To understand and cope with these modern living conditions, students should be exposed to some scientific fact and thought. A sociology major, for example, would be better equipped to understand the reasons for the varying degrees of success of the world's many cultures if he studied the scientific influence on them." When asked why the course was being introduced now, Dr. Hastings responded: "The recent decreases in science enrolments have prompted many of us to reexamine our role within the university. This new course is a direct result of such a re-examination. Its purpose is to present physics in a manner which is not highly technical or mathematical but which brings out the essential beauty and ideas of the subject. It has not been designed to train scientists, but to give non - scientists an idea of what the physicist is up to these days." The course will be primarily concerned with recent ideas and discoveries in Physics. Chairman of the Physics Department, Dr. V. V. Paranjape . commented, "Science programs of this type are now being offered at several Canadian Universities and are proving to be extremely popular with the Arts students." Parking lot #2 will be closed as of Monday, June 22 in order that construction on a wilding for the Regional School of Nursing may begin in that area. Parking lot #3 next to the Centennial Building will be closed temporarily during July while it undergoes expansion. It will accommodate 250 cars when completed. A new 450-car parking lot will be made between the University and the Faculty of Education building. It will be ready for operation in September when the students return for the 1970-71 academic year. But where will you be able to p:trk this summer? Director of Planning and Physical Plant, Claud Smith said: "there will be ample parking in the lot east of the Ii brary to replace that space lost by construction on the nursing building." And if you still can't find a place to park your car this summer, maybe it would be better to leave it at home and take the bus. The lots marked #4 (Student Parking) will be open to car owners .who normally parked in the #2lot. ePLEASE FREE NORTH FESTIVAL PROJECT AWARDED SECOND GRANT $8,000 grant from the Province of Ontario Council for the Arts (POCA) has been given to the Free North Festival project which will be held at Lakehead University this summer from July 6 until August 21. The Festival also received a $2,000 grant from the Council in May to cover initial operating expenses. Lakehead University, a co-sponsor in this ambitious project to inspire the arts in Northwestern Ontario, has loaned facilities valued at $7,800 to the Festival and the University's Faculty of Arts has donated $735 to it. Four hard working young artists of Thunder Bay: Charles Sharun, Peter Lenardon, Clint Kushak and Barbara Williams the co-ordinators of this prO: gram have brought together more than thirty resource people to assist with the Festival. Their project consists of open ~orkshops in drawing, paintmg, sculpture, film making, print making, drama, music, photography, pottery, literature, crafts and ceramics and it will benefit the entire community of Thunder Bay since everyone is invited to come out to the university to either eAn watch or work in the studios. There will be no admission charge and supplies will be available for those wishing to participate. Although the Festival is open to the general public, emphasis is being placed on the great number of students who will be unemployed this summer and would otherwise have very little todo. The Free North Festival expects to draw out local talent as well as attract outside entertainers so that concerts plays and film festivals will be staged throughout the summer. The exhibit has come from the collection of the Extension Department of the Art Gallery of Ontario and is sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and the Aesthetics Society at Lakehead University. Picasso is widely recognized as the most significant of modem artists. This exhibia tion shows Picasso in all stages of his life and work from the 'Art Nouveau' elegance and tragic sorrow of 'The Old Guitarist' through the Blue and Rose periods to the invention of Cubism in 'Les Demoiselles d' Avignon', in the most crucial picture of the modem period. The exhibition explores the changes Cubism underwent; 'Synthetic' cubism appears in the 'Three Musicians', the happiest picture of 'le jazz hot' ever devised, and at last, Picasso's expressive distortions as m 'La Femme qui Pleure'. Perhaps no other artist has expressed with more passionate conviction the horror and futility of war than Picasso in his 'Guemica', seen in this exhibition Included on some of the panels are relevant texts, many drawn from Picasso's own writings. "During the past year, data has been collected concerning the academic preferences of the students which will better able them to choose their courses with a greater than average possibility of success," the Dean explained. This information will be invaluable to incoming students as the norms are the most up-to-date and pertain exclusively to courses and programs at Lakehead University. By comparing his interests with those of graduating students, a new student can discover which subjects attract students with the same interests as his own. With this information, the student is better able to choose his courses and major area of study. The norms have been developed by Mr. Tosh Hayashi, M.A. (Lakehead); working under the direction of Dr. W. T. Melnyk, Chairman of the University's Department of Psychology. SHAKESPEARE SEMINAR AND THEATRE SPECl·ALISTS W. Pendergrast C. Pendergrast eAre you hung-up on Hamlet, mad about Macbeth or keen on King Lear? Well, you'll find all these characters alive and well at Lakehead University's Shakespeare Seminar and Theatre Workshop this summer. This will be the sixth summer for this special course which is co-ordinated by Dr. George Merrill, the University's Shakespeare specialist. It is designed to combine an academic study of Shakespeare, his time, his plays and his theatre with practical experience in acting, speech, technical theatre and a period study of Elizabethan life styles. This year there will be an additional laboratory course which will involve the rehearsal and preparation of a presentation of W. Shakespeare G.Merrill Shakespeare scenes. Plans for an Elizabethan "Midsummer Festival" are in progress. In addition, the Summer · School will show a limited series of Shakespeare films from many lands. It is expected that the regular theatre trip and tour of the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis will take place in July to see this year's production of "The Tempest." Dr. Merrill expects an enrolment of 40 students in the course which he will direct in co-operation with Mr. and Mrs. William Pendergrast of the faculty of the National Theatre School of Canada. They will be assisted by Mr. a11d Mrs. Bartley Bard who are graduates of the National Theatre School. The Kudder Preference Record, is used by Mr. Hayashi to measure ten broad areas of the students' academic interests and it takes approximately thirty minutes to complete. (The Record will be available to incoming students at the times indicated below). Because of the potential usefulness of this type of information, each student will be offering invaluable service to others coming into the university in later years. Because of the time required to score and interpret the form, each student is encouraged to come to the University at least two days prior to his appointment with his advisor so as to undertake the record. At the time of counselling, an interpretation should then be available. Each student is free to come at any time within the times indicated below. The counselling sessions will all be held in the Upper Theatre (Rm. 135) in the Agora. The Centre is under the directorship of Ken Boshcoff, an Arts Student, and is being run as an extension of the Academics program of the Alma Mater Society. For the summer months, research papers will be done, info.c mation on all aspects of the drug scene accumulated and counselling on personal matters will be avail• able. The Centre is situated in the office across from the University Centre Theatre, which formerly housed the Winter Carnival committee. "This service has as its basic aims-education and communication ," commented Mr. Boshcof( "believing that much of the publi city given to the non-medical use of drugs has been based on ignor ance and isolation leading to a tremendous over-reaction by adults in general and parents in particular." OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING BUREAU NOW IN OPERATION seeking off.campus accommodations at Lakehead University this summer will be assisted by the Off • Campus Housing Bureau under the direction of Jim Gellert and Susan LeSauvage. Approximately 1200 summer sessional and 540 Ontario College of Education (O.C.E.) students will be attending the university from June 29 to August 14. The Lakehead University Residence under its Director G. D. McLeod will absorb a healthy portion of this total but a substantial number require off-campus accommodations. In addition, large stocks of Alcohol and Drug Research Foundation (ADARF) fact sheets are being distributed. Mr. Boshcoff has spoken to parents, teachers and professionals in their various organizations and he has also delivered a report to the Le Dain Commission concerning local aspects of drug abuse. In addition to several conferences and courses on drugs, he has an in-depth knowledge of the drug culture. For those in need of counselling beyond this primary level, referrals to various professionals will be given upon request. GEOLOGISTS ON THE MOVE e"Three members of the Department of Geology have got the 'travelling itch' this year" said Dr. Edward Mercy, Chairman of the department. Dr. H. Loubat, Assistant Pro• fessor, has been invited, as Visiting Professor, to give a series of lectures on the geology of Canada at the Institut de Mineralogie de l'Universite, University of Geneva, Switzerland. While in Geneva he will conduct a series of field excursions in theAlpine Mountains. Dr. J. Franklin, Assistant Professor, is spending two months in Europe and Britain visiting various famous mining localities with two purposes in mind. By discussing, with local geological experts, the condi~ tions of formation of these mineral deposits he will greatly enlarge his knowledge of his subject; but also, he will be seeking analogies with the mineral deposits of northwestern Ontario and thus furthering his researches into the local metallogeny. Dr. J . Talbot, Associate Professor, will be travelling to Missoula, Montana; unfortunately for the Department he will not be returning in the fall since he is taking up his appointment as Chairman of the Department of Geology in the University of Montana.
