UNIVERSITY

THIRTY EIGHTH
CONVOCATION
2002

Lakehead University
Convocation 2002
aturday, May 25, 2002 marks Lakehead
University's thirty eighth convocation for the
conferring of degrees and diplomas. The word
"convocation" means "calling together". It is a
ceremonial meeting of the entire university
community. On Convocation Day university
members and their guests wear special attire
based on a tradition that dates back as long as
seven centuries ago. The academic costume, also
referred to as academic "dress" or "regalia", had its
origins in the ancient European universities. The
regalia was devised to distinguish academic
persons such as doctors, licentiates, masters and
bachelors. In the middle ages they were worn as
everyday attire. Gowns were a necessity because of
unheated buildings and hoods were needed to cover
the heads of medieval scholars.

S

There are many variations of academic dress. The
hood, gown and in some cases the special hat
(mortarboard) worn by an individual is determined
by the style of the university where he or she
received a degree. The colourful gowns and hoods
of universities from across Canada, the United
States, the United Kingdom and several other
nations of the world are worn here today.
The academic dress chosen by Lakehead
University is fashioned after that of the University
of Oxford, the oldest English·speakinguniversity
in the world. The robes worn by the officers of the
university· the Chancellor, who presides at
convocation, the President (who is also the Vice·
Chancellor) and the Chair of the Board of
Governors· are all of the Oxford cut and trim.
Each has its own distinctive colour. The colourful
gowns worn by the individuals who are receiving
honorary degrees are of the same design as are the
black gowns worn by the student candidates. The
ritual at convocation reflects the medieval custom
that anyone in a university could wear a gown,
but a hood was the symbol of a degree. Students
who have met the university's academic
requirements (three, four, five or six years of study
in particular subjects) wear the symbol of their
status as holders of a Lakehead University degree.
Lakehead University's bachelor's and master's
degree hoods are distinguished by a one or two
inch colour border which indicates the degree

acquired eg. white for Arts, drab for Commerce
blue for Education, burgundy for Nursing, etc. '
Lakehead's first PhD degree was conferred in
1998.
In addition to "earned" degrees, the university
confers "honorary" degrees which symbolize the
highest honour that can be conferred on an
individual by the university. An honorary
degree may be awarded in recognition of
scholarly or creative attainments or
distinguished public service to the country or
region. They go to individuals who have been
designated by the University's Senate, its
senior academic governing body, as deserving
special honour. At convocation the degree is
awarded honoris causa, or "in the cause of
honour". A hood is also given to the recipient
and it may be worn to any academic affair.
Recipients of these degrees become honorary
alumni of the University and they may affix,
after their names, the abbreviation of the
degree. Two honorary degrees, the Doctor of
Letters and the Doctor of Laws will be
conferred in today's ceremonies.
The Board of Governors of the university also
recognizes individuals who have contributed to
the growth, development, welfare and well·
being of Northwestern Ontario and ofLakehead
University. This is done by the conferring of
the title Fellow of the University. You will
recognize university Fellows by their familiar
blue gown with white velvet epitoge or scarf.
During the processional and the recessional the
Marshal for convocation carries the Mace, a
silver wand which is a traditional symbol of the
university's authority. This mace was given to
the university by the Alumni Association in
1971. lt bears the university's motto Ad
augusts perangusta, Achievement through
Effort.
Today the university community celebrates its
thirty eighth convocation. Its members dress
in clothes which are symbolic, not functional,
and go through a centuries old ritual for the
confermentofdegreesanddiplomas. We thank
you for being present to share this special event
with us.

Photographs· Those wishing to take pictures of the graduates are most welcome to come forward to the left
and right of the stage. To avoid congestion of that area, please wait until your particular graduate is ready to
receive his or her degree before you come forward.

CONVOCATION
Saturday, May 25, 2002
Thunder Bay Community Auditorium
Afternoon Ceremony - 2:30 p.m. for the Granting
of Undergraduate Degrees & Diplomas in
the Faculty of Education,
the Faculty of Engineering,
and the Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Environment

THIRTY EIGHTH ANNUAL CONVOCATION
FOR THE CONFERRING OF DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS

LOUISE ARBOUR
Justice of the
Supreme Court of Canada

Madam Justice Louise Arbour is described as being one of
Canada's most powerful jurists, a lifelong defender of the rights
of the accused, an individual who goes about her work with
courage and determination.
Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada in
1999, she served as Chief Prosecutor of the International
Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. In
May 1999, she broke new ground by issuing history's first
international warrant for the arrest of a sitting head of state Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic- plus four political and
military leaders, on charges of murder and other crimes against
humanity.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1947, she attended convent school
and graduated from the College Regina Assumpta in Montreal in
1967 with her Bachelor's degree and in 1970 completed her L L.L. with distinction from the University of
Montreal. She was called to the Quebec Bar in 1971 and the Ontario Bar in 1977.
Thirteen years of academic work followed: first as Associate Professor of Law and later as Associate Dean at York
University's Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. During this period she raised three children, and wrote
prolifically in both English and French on criminal procedure, human rights and civil rights. As Vice-President of
the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, she campaigned for voting rights for prisoners and later served as
counsel for the Association. She was appointed to the bench in 1987 as a judge of the Ontario Supreme Court and
later was promoted to the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Throughout her career, Louise Arbour has demonstrated a,willingness to go against the grain in defending the
rights of the accused. In 1992, she co-authored a Court of Appeal decision upholding a lower court acquittal of an
accused Second World War mass murderer. In 1995, she presided over an inquiry into violence at the Prison for
Women in Kingston, Ontario, and made recommendations to the Solicitor-General regarding the operations of
Canada's Correctional Service. In 2000, as a Supreme Court Justice, she issued a bold dissenting opinion in the
case ofR v. Oickle saying the Crown was wrong to use an alleged confession by an accused arsonist.
Madam Justice Louise Arbour holds 24 honorary degrees from universities and colleges in Canada, the United
States, Scotland and Belgium. She is a Lifetime Member of the Association des juristes d'expression francaise de
!'Ontario, and has received an amazing number of awards including: the Medaille de l'Universite de Montreal;
Achievement Award, Women's Law Association; G. Arthur Martin Award, Criminal Lawyers' Association; Medal
of Honour, International Association of Prosecutors, and most recently the McGill Centre for Research and
Teaching on Women Person of the Year Award.

JOSEPH RONALD BARATTA 1938-2001
Educator

Joe Baratta felt he was a lucky man. He was born in the south
end of Port Arthur at a time when prospects for a poor boy with
an Italian name were not good. As a student at Port Arthur
Collegiate Institute, he demonstrated not only excellence in
football and hockey, but also a compassionate nature and love for
life. Joe aspired to a career in teaching, but could not afford to
attend university. Fortunately, under a program provided
through Lakehead Teachers College and Lakehead University's
emerging Faculty of Education in the early 1960s, Joe was able
to receive professional training while he worked as a
probationary teacher. He went on to complete a B.A. (1970),
B.Ed. (1975) and M.Ed. (1980) at Lakehead University, all as a
part-time student.
With his exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills, Joe
soon moved into leadership roles in the Port Arthur Roman
Catholic Separate School Board, and later the Lakehead District
Roman Catholic Separate School Board. From 1966 to 1996, Joe served as principal of six elementary schools,
taking time out to help launch the Board's first junior high school, St. Ignatius, as its inaugural vice principal. He
finished his career as principal of Corpus Christi School in 1996, when he retired for health reasons.
In appreciation ofthe opportunities afforded to him by Lakehead University, Joe began volunteering as a Marshall
at Convocation in the early 1980s. By the mid-1980s, he had been elected to the Board of Directors of the Alumni
Association, serving as President from 1990 to 1992. Under his leadership, the Alumni Association made a
significant contribution toward the purchase of the Avila Centre, which became the new home of the Alumni
Association and Alumni Relations Office. He also served two terms on the Board of Governors and as Chair of the
Italian Studies Committee.
Joe honoured his heritage as a proud lifelong member of the Italian Society of Port Arthur. Other community
organizations which gained from Joe's active involvement included the Fort William Redskins Quarterback Club,
Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, CAA Board of Directors, Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association and
charities of the Gran Sasso Club. In 1983, he was inducted into the Thunder Bay Sports Hall of Fame as a member
ofthe 1958 Fort William Redskins, Canadian Intermediate Football Champions.
Joe said that his volunteer work for Lakehead University was his way of giving something back to an institution
that had given so much to him. Lakehead University is fortunate to have had an alumnus like Joe. He died in
August, 2001, leaving his wife, Gloria, and three children. The Alumni Association has established the Joseph R.
Baratta Memorial Bursary in Education in his honour.
