L969 HELLO~!! We hope that you will welcome the very first issue of "Technology Tidings." This publication is the idea and effort of the graduates of the first class of Library Technology at Lakehead University. This Graduate Newsletter was contemplated and produced by the second year students (Potential Graduates) and by the Graduate themselves. This medium will keep us "in touch" with each other. You see, many of our fellow graduates have accepted positions in other parts of the province, and, as well, in other Provinces. It is hoped that each .gradu- ate at some time will contribute a "Regional Report", a book review, or an editorial. However, words always connote beautiful thoughts or ideas, yet it is action that solidly enforces REALITYo It was interesting to note the following in Vol. 14, No. 1, 2, 3, issue of "Feliciter". Library Associations around the world, including the Canadian Library Association, sent letters of protest, through diploma.tic channels, regarding the occupation of the State Library of Czechoslovakia and the obstruction of all activity by the occupation of the UoSaSoR. The protest was effective and the library was permitted to resume occupations. --C. E. ~ Mrs. Dorothy Reid has accomplished another amazing feat! Our multi-talented story-teller has her Tales of Nanabozho on record. We all know that her book won an award for Book of the Year for Children presented by the CLA. The sessional lecturer is Mr. M. Zobata.r, Accountant at Abitibi. This is a tri-p~t course. Each part is simply an introduction to one of the specialized areas of Business Administration, in essence, a survey of concepts and techniques. Up until the month of December, the students have lectures in Data Processing. An outline of this introduction is as follows: Def in.it ions Basic Operations Manual & Mechanical methods punched cards p~per tape computer methods systems development decision tables progra.nnne flow charts computer demonstrations typical library 1applications This topic is dealt with according to the stages of mechanization since each level entails progressively greater proportions of machine work to puman effort. So a study of the type of equipment now available for processing dat~an be grouped into a look at Manual data processing, mechanical, punch card or paper tape and computer data processing equipment o You see, the different kinds of equipment related to human effort involved often must be considered in choosing a system which best suits a particular institution or operation. A natural reaction of yours may be to question the necessity of such a course as this in our Library Technology program, however we are all aware that the computer is indeed the most powerful and flexible tool available to mankind. No doubt, the computer will touch man everywhere and in every way~ Technol9gists should be AWARE of progressive steps being made in library service. Automation in libraries is a well discussed topic in the "Professi~:mal literature." Let's face it------Technologists should be more knowledgeable about this subject. For all libraries themselves as information and intermedia centers are feeling the effects of the informational '. explosion and technological changes which may be termed as the second Industrial Rovolutiono The ultimate, we conceive today, in automatic data processing systems is to have all files in ma.chine readable form available for direct access and updating on a real time basis o The students will consider the "How" "Why" and "importance of" computers in library operations. Consider the following: a central processing unit can contain master files as a computer can be programmed for a certain operation. ieo Upd~ting files budget re-ordering materials serials - in Periodicals, possible library operations for a computer are purchase, payments, scheduling for the bindery, shipments, printed lists, subscription renewals, inventory. �BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Tle In Reference work, a regional network is possible in future, co-operation between many libraries and resource , centers. Interest profiles of people r doing research may be };: .~pt, instructions for search among special materials (held in logic area) Memory-tr~nsferred to ma.chine readable form on cards, print out can contain citations of current materials valuable to those engaged.in research. There are many other areas where a computer system could assist. As a follow-up, students will-be given additional lectures about the computer in a library in the Communications course. Reference is made to MARC, MEDLARS, CBIP, and CHEM ABSTRAC'rS ( the latter two are computer produced). In essence, this introduction in Data Processing is part of each Lib. Technology student's Orientation as a technologist must be familiar with the whole aspect of library service. The second part of the course deals with an introduction to Accounting principles. Lectures deal with the discussion of the necessity for accounts, history of the development of business transactions, credit and debit, and of course, time is devoted to studying specialized accountso Short practice sessions in drawing up journal entries and trial balances completed the last few weeks of the study. Human Relations study completes the three topic course. Mr. A. Seuret of the department of Business Administration is the Sessional lecturer. The emphasis is placed on "groups" and upon the "individual" making up these groups. The questions: "What does each individual bring to his job and working environment?" and "What does the job give in turn to the individual concerned?" a.re discussed and studied thoroughly. Factors affecting the individual at work---impersonal influences, social and cultural, interaction and activity from others, and the interaction and activities to others, a.re looked at via case studies of certain Human Relations situations. All in all, this course is very valuable for a Library Technologist!! They are planning to spend one week in swinging London and also on in Paris o Ireland will capture their fantasy for four weeks as Nancy and Maynard plan to tour the Western area via bicycles!!! Newsletter should carry a stimulating "Reflections of our trip" by who(who-M & N) I am sure that Mr. B. will bring back a great deal of information • which he will no doubt impart to students in his History of Libraries class next year o o �NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS STUDENTS Bookmobile Trips : Reports by Susan Willia.ms and Mary Nation Jim Pounder and I ler.t Monday morning January 27 in the Bookmobile for a week lOng exchange trip. Our first stop was the community of Seine River where we exchanged books with an Indian Schoo 1.. The first two nights were spent in Fort Frnaces. Wednesday morning we left for Rainy River stopping at schools on the way exchanging 50 - 300 books at each stop. Nestor Falls was our stop for Thursday night and Friday we returned to Fort Frances. All the way along our trip we were enthusiastically received by the children and made welcome in their homes. -- s. w. )< X )( X )( )( >EX X )( )( X )( )( XX The bookmobile trip in January was an experience I will never forget. My feet were cold much of the time but whereever we visited we were enthusiastically welcomed by the adults and. children. The libraries were located in one room JYH.an Reserve schools and new Centennial buildings (Atikokan ~ Emo) in Comminity· Centers (Rainy River) and in a High School (Rainy River). The bookmobile, a converted. school bus was stocked with 2,000 books, 100 records, half a dozen sculptures and a dozen pictures. At each stop we exchanged 50 to 300 books and a few of the other materials. The largest library, at Fort Frances, took the longest time as it needed. 700 books. We occupied the evening hours by reading or watching television or sleeping. The W8rk involved moving piles of books in fairly cold weather made us quite tired at times! However by the end of the week, we were accustomed to it ane only the -22 temperature in Fort Frances on our last morning really "frosted" us. 'This year's Committee consists of Lynda Barker, Nancy Marks and Lois Pentney. Students have had their pictures taken by Pouncy's Stud.i9. The large island of Newfoundland, with an area of 42, 735 square miles and population of 500,000 provided the Jublect of study for the perceptive, talented Canadian author, Farley Mowat. His text deals with the history of the island; in essence, a perceptive account of trie way of life of its inhabitants and the rare qualities that these people possess. Their way of life i.P controlled and profoundly affected by the sea. A penetrating p 01 t rayal of this concept is relat e · a j_; Mowat writes about the inhabitants of the outposts on the Sou~.l'n,ri?st Coast. For them, their world and existance is the sea. 11 For those who lived by it and upon it, the sea is the ultimate reality in their existance. They accept it as their master, for they know that they will never master it. ThP. cea is there. It is their way of life: it gives them life and somethimes, in its moments of fury, it gives them death. They do not struggle against its imponderaple stre ngth, nor do they stand in braggart's opposition to its powers." Mowat I s nostalgic record of a way of life is complimented by the truly magnificant photography of John De Visser. Each photog~aph captures the scenes of this way of life which Mowat has descrfoed so intensely in words. The message and feeling in E~act·._ of their arts and forms of expression is readily apparent and 1J.nderstood. This way of life i s passing--but why--Mowat attributes this threat to the arrival of King Joey. "The day that Smallwood ca.me to i;:ower, the continuity and evq1.-·1tion of the Newfoundlan d way of life was disrupted, probably forE:ve.r ... Progress dictated t hat the men of the sea forswear their ancient ways of life and move, as rootless migrants, to the alien mileau of industrial and mining towns. ' 1 Now centralization is the goal of the government. This planned process accompanied by financial assistance to people in small villages has as its goal, the movement of these people to larger canters which in turn form new economic and social unit.: . But, the unity and secu.rity experienced in the outports can never be foun1 in these large industrial towns~ The poignancy of the plight of these people is well expressed by a young Newfoundlander herself: "The wor;:;test thing I know is that we have got t·o go away.
