This course, which carries university credit, will give you a practical, working command of the Spanish language and an understanding of today's Spain - the new Spain that has emerged since Franco died. You will live and work with Spaniards, particularly Spanish students whose interests and concerns are similar to yours. Formal classroom sessions will be held each morning with instructors from the University of Madrid and other institutions who have experience teaching foreign students. A busy and comprehensive program of social and cultural activities, led by Spanish student monitors, will reflect the interests of your group. You will see Spanish history and tradition , village festivals , local architecture, and traditional arts and handicrafts. You'll visit such centres as El Escorial, Toledo, Segovia and Salamanca, known for their historical and cultural importance. Modern Spain will also be on your itinerary, w"th its hydroelectric developments, its automobile industry and its satellite tracking stations. The Spanish in Spain program will be centred in Madrid, Spain's beautiful and exciting capital city of more than three million people. Located in the geographic centre of Spain, Madrid enjoys an almost perfect climate at 700 metres above sea level. You will live in a "Colegio Mayor" or University Residence. A select number of students will also have the opportunity of living with a Spanish family. Popular festivals abound in Spain throughout the year. Giant figures , gigantes, can be seen in many of them. Those shown here are from Lerida. The Rastro, Madrid's Flea Market, is open all week but is busiest on a Sunday morning. Daily routine will follow the Spanish model: classes in the morning, afternoons free, activities in the evening; breakfast 8:00 - 9:00, lunch 2:00 and dinner 9:00. Language classes begin at 9:30, Civilization at 11 :30. Basic structures, vocabulary, idioms and conversational technique are presented in the morning sessions. Evening activities are informal and relaxing. They reflect the student's own interests and provide the opportunity to use Spanish in a wide variety of situations. Emil Dolphin has lived and travelled extensively in Spain and has taken students there on many occasions. From 1972 to 1975 he was director of a group of American students at the University of Madrid. He knows the University, the city and Spain intimately. Mr. Dolphin now teaches Spanish language and literature at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He is married and has three children. His family also shares his enthusiasm for the Spanish language and the country itself.
