Tbe L&kehead University Alma Mater Society's concern about the Canadian Native situation has culminated thus far in the establishment of the autonOllOus Native cultural Committee. It is composed of both Indian and non-Indian members. 'lbere is constant publicity of the soci&l., political and economic disparities between the native and his Canadian counterpart. There is a rapidly growing native movement towards an equal place in society. There is an increasing militancy developing in the demands made by Indians and Eskimos. These factors, among others, have resulted for the most part in an interested but confused public. The committee has involved itself in formulating an educational program designed not only for the student body but for the community at large. The program will hapetu.l.ly-provide . along vith its informative role, a forum upon which the beginning of a cross-cultural, communicative and constructive dialogue will be based. As within any ethnic group, there is a spectrum of views. The result is that there are certain reactions to specific opinions, whether they be hostile or supportive. It is a fact, however, that one cannot understand a minority movement together with its causes, goals and nature until the individual has been exposed to some or all of the prevailing ideas in the spectrum. It is proposed that, beginning in 1970/71, a fourth and fifth year be introduced for carefully selected graduates of diploma programs in the four fields of engineering listed above. Students who complete these two additional years would receive a degree in Engineering. The year 1970/71 was selected because this will coincide with the first graduating cJasses in Engineering Technology from Ontario's newly established Colleges of J\pplicd Arts and Technology. Fnr the current year the total enrolment in Engineering Technology in this Province is 4,550 (Ryerson 1,600, other CAA.T's 2,950). It has heen estimated that in 1970, the number o f graduates will exceed !,S00. Past experience indicates that a significant number of these graduates want to go on in a degree program, with a<lvanced standing. The fourth and fifth years proposed at Lakchead have been espec.ially designed for them. Diploma/Degree Program Features 1) Operation of Engineering Technology Diploma and Engineering Degree academic programs in series will improve the long term relationship between technologists and engineers by increasing the understanding of the role and function of each relative to one another. 2) Provides a practical method for Engineering Technology diploma graduates to stay in l:ana<la to complete the requirements for an engineering degree within a time frame acceptable and encouraging to the serious student. 3) Applies the concept of the extended cooperative prosram. After only 3 years of technical study a student is qual1f1e""J as a technologist to spend an extended period of time in the industry and return to complete the Engineering degree requirements. Not all students would choose this option, however; students who must fund their own education would benefit. 4) The concept of the industry standard and modernization can be incorporated in the laboratory design and curriculum. In addition, the maximum possible use can be made of secondary industry facilities in the J.akehead which may help to establish a mutually attractive an<l active applied research and technology applications program.
