A great deal, however, has been accomplished in the relatively short period since I 96 r Our disciplines have been well and firmly established; so well, infact, that we have attained a prominent position among Canadian universities in Engineering and Forestry. The first phase of our development is now behind us and we are about to embark on the second. Due to rapid growth, certain areas require additional physical space. Rather than embarking upon a capital building program, a space study was commissioned to renew and reallocate existing space in order to ensure maximum efficiency with regards to its usage. At the same time, new and more modern equipment will be required. The computers at the University are working at close to capacity. With more demands being placed upon them daily, we have an immediate concern to augment the existing equipment to accommodate our long range computer capacity needs. Paterson Chairman, Development Council �Our Programs Lakehead University's innovative curriculum offers our undergraduates and graduate students many career alternatives, with programs in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, fine arts, education, business administration, engineering, forestry, library technology, nursing, outdoor recreation and physical education. Many of these programs have a regional emphasis that combines formal classroom instruction with the natural laboratories of the Canadian Shield. As a smaller University, our highly qualified professors are readily available for guidance and counselling on a one-to-one basis. " Our Beginnings Lakehead University evolved from the Lakehead Technical Institute which was established in 1946. In 19 56 the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology was created by an A ct of the Ontario Legislature and a year later, it moved to its present site, donated by the former City of Port Arthur. As time passed, the College expanded in response to escalating enrolment; courses were added to the curriculum and the College was empowered to confer university degrees in arts and sciences. The first degrees were granted on May 6, 196 5. The Lake head University A ct was given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario on June 22, 196 5 and came into force July 1 of that year. The Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology became Lakehead University. Its mandate includes a special concern for the unique needs of the region's population as well as those who come to us from across Canada. The growing reputation of the University's excellence has created a need for additional equipment, testing facilities, physical space, and research funding. In recent years, government grants to all post-secondary institutions have not kept pace with inflation and the growth of enrolment. It has become extremely important to augment this shortfall with gifts from the private sector. In concert with this solicitation, 19 83-84 marked the beginning of an Alumni Annual Fund. Your support in partnership with Lakehead University will truly be an investment in its future. Academic Development New developments in every academic discipline demand that teachers and researchers strive to keep current in their related areas of expertise through publication of their work and participation in conjer enc es and seminars. The fresh perspectives thus gained are passed on to colleagues and students. Additional sources that provide appropriate funding for these programs are required. The f acuity and students of Lakehead University undertake numerous projects each year in the public and private sectors of industry. Much of the research done at the University has implications both provincially and nationally. Some of the projects deal with the unique problems encountered in the northern regions of Ontario. In response to this need, Lakehead University and the Province of Ontario recently established Innovation North through which faculty members from many departments work together on such projects. To fully meet these commitments, Lakehead University is soliciting supplementary financing to provide for needed academic and research support equipment. �Library The Chancellor Paterson Library is the academic heart of Lakehead University that provides program support to students and f acuity. At the same time, the Library reaches out to serve the University's Of!-Campus program and the citizens of the Thunder Bay area. The Library is creating a computerized database of its catalogue. The transition from catalogue cards to electronic technology is expensive, but the benefits are great in both service and long-term cost of operations. To obtain this objective, significant capital outlay is required, which cannot be fully financed from operating funds. The Library has the only research collection in the rfgion and must keep current with the rapid advances of knowledge and technology. At a time when the demand for information is increasing, the cost of this information, (books, periodicals, and other materials), is increasing too. In order to continue to serve the University community and the greater community which surrounds it in a meaningful way, collections must be expanded and technology constantly updated. Present funding allocations are such that supplementary financing must be sought. Computer In this age of electronic technology, the quality of computer services is fundamental in maintaining contemporary instructional, research and administrative activities. Lakehead University's computer services ha·ve expanded dramatically to fulfill this critical and central function. Over time, further expansion and continued up-grading requirements will place a heavy demand on capital resources, thus competing with and threatening financial allocations to other important University functions. Financial support, in addition to normal University funding, is solicited to maintain this essential program. Space Development and Fabric Renewal Significant growth and greater technological content of several academic programs at Lakehead University have resulted in additional allocations beyond the dedicated spaces. A recently completed comprehensive space allocation study has identified ways by which present program requirements can be consolidated and accommodated within the total available space. A one-time capital outlay will be required to make the associated physical changes. Many years of inadequate funding has made the refurbishing of the University's furniture a necessity. To provide for these needs and the implementation of the recommendations of the space allocation study, new financing is required to supplement traditional funding. Instructional Services The instructional support services required to maintain acceptable communication levels in all phases of the educational process at the University has placed a demand on aged and inadequate equipment inventories to the point where selected resource renewal and capability upgrading has become a necessity. At a time when financial resources are severely restricting program development, additional funds are required to meet this real need. Student A id and Service A comprehensive ongoing student financial assistance and counselling program is required at Lakehead University. The need for financial assistance has become particularly evident as student summer employment opportunities have declined significantly in tlze past several years. In a complex modern world, the need for professional counselling has never been greater. Because of the limitation of available funds, the University is unable to satisfy all the requests for financial and counselling assistance. A program that wi/1 provide a suitable counselling service, bursaries for needy students, and scholarships for those with outstanding academic and leadership qualifications, would be an initial step towards establishing a partnership between our students and the Canadian business community. �Serving Our Region Lakehead University is a major educational and cultural resource. In addition to the formal programs which the University offers, f acuity and staff provide consulting and counselling services not available elsewhere in the region. Playing a leading role in a wide variety of activities as volunteers in cultural, municipal, religious, social and other projects, they make a significant contribution to the benefit of our community. Many organizations hold workshops and regular meetings on campus. Our library is available without charge to area residents for study and research, while the C. f. Sanders Fieldhouse facilities are available for squash, swimming, or other activities at a nominal charge. During the summer months, the University hosts conjer enc es from across the country. Cultural events such as live theatre, recitals, art exhibits, concerts and workshops are held throughout the year and attract a large number of individuals from Thunder Bay and beyond. Academic Excellence: Lakehead University's annual budget is in excess of $30 million and has a substantial impact on its surrounding community. As one of the area's largest employers, its 1,100 full-time and part-time staff generate a monthly payroll of $1. 6 million, most of which is spent locally on goods and services. In addition, some 1,800 full-time students from outside Thunder Bay generate more than $8. 5 million annually to the local economy. Leadership and excellence are not sometimes things. They are developed through the intellectual and moral growth that are provided in ~igher education. Lakehead University strives to develop the intellectual growth and moral strength which are the prerequisites of leadership. Excellence is an elusive quality that once attained must be nurtured and maintained through dedication, discipline, and hard work. From LTI, Lakehead became the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology in 1956. The Lakehead University Act was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in 1965, and Lakehead University was established. The first degrees granted by Lakehead University were in Arts and Science in 1965. Now, only 40 years later, the University has over 7,500 students, more than 37,000 alumni working around the world, and a bright future. Lakehead University has grown into a vibrant and dynamic institution and we will continue to build on past strengths for the future! Why Celebrate 40 years? The mission of the Lakehead University 40th Anniversary Celebration has been to celebrate Lakehead University's 40th Anniversary, and the institution's history and development as a leader in higher education in the City of Thunder Bay and surrounding region, and to bring back a significant number of alumni and friends to take part in this celebration. " THUMDl:RWOLVl:S In September of 1993 the Wall of Fame Committee was struck. It consisted of Norm Lavoie, Ron Lappage, Hank Akervall, Peter Dika, Steve Daniar, Francis Clayton, Dan Bissonnette and Darlene Yakimoski. Their mission was to deve1op the criteria for the wall which included who could be eligible for nomination to the wall. It was decided that each induction year there was a possibility of one builder, two athletes and one team being included. In June of 1996 the First Annual Lakehead University Sports Wall of Fame Induction Dinner was held. It continued for five consecutive years. It was then decided that the dinner would be held every two years.
