Morgan TO: Academic and Administrative Staff SUBJECT: Mid-Canada Development Corridor Conference First Session - Lakehead University, August 18th to 22nd, 1969 You recently received a small pamphlet outlining the purpose of the Conference and the basic topics that will be discussed. We are expecting approximately 75 participants from business, industry, major unions and the professions, 25 governmental representatives from the provinces and Federal Government, 25 representatives from the eleven sponsoring universities and approximately 25 key speakers, panelists etc., for a total of 150 participants. With the exception of the university representatives each participant has been asked to contribute $5000 to the Mid-Canada Development Corridor Foundation. This money covers all expenditures in connection with the August 1969 session at Lakehead University, the August 1970 session at a pla.ce in the Corridor yet to be named and the ten day trip through the corridor area in the fall of 1969. Some members of the academic staff of Lakehead University have indicated an interest in attending at least some of the sessions a.t Lakehead University in August 1969. The basic format for the Conference is as follows: Tuesday morning - 4 panelists, each speaking for approximately 15 minutes will discuss Resources (Human and Natural). Participants will then break up into discussion groups of about 20 persons and after approximately 1 hour to l½ hours will report back to the plenary session with the results of their discussion. In the afternoon the same format will be used to discuss Industrialization. Wednesday morning - Urbanization will be the topic (Human and Environmental Factors). Wednesday afternoon will be a free afternoon with some social events planned. Friday morning - There will be a summary of the proceeding days discussions and conclusions. If you are interested in attending any of the sessions please let me know by April 30th. (There will be more room at the panel discussions) Because of limitations of space it is possible that there will not be enough room for everyone who is interested. Eleven universities across Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia have joined with the Government of Ontario to sponsor this major Canadian Conference to examine the advantages of establishing a nation wide policy and plan for the development of Canada's Mid-North. At the first session of the Conference at Lakehead University papers by outstanding authorities will be given on the problems and potential of the Mid-North under the following topic headings: Resources; Industrialization; Urbanization - human and environmental factors; Transportation and Communication; and Financial and Trade Implications. In the fall of 1969 Conference participants will visit carefully chosen places in the Corridor in order to familiarize themselves at first hand with the living, working and other conditions of the Mid-North. In August of 1970 the second session of the Conference will be held at another place in the Corridor. The intention of �222222222222222222 the second session will be to create recommendations and conclusions which will then be published and put forward to Federal and Provincial Governments and the people of Canada.
