U .B.A. handbook. Last year, students found the handbook very helpful and interesting. This year we wanted to make it better. Our goal was to make this handbook both practical and professional. The book contains information which we thought would be beneficial to every student in the school. We did not want to reproduce the Lakehead University Calendar. J J J J Jennifer Milne President, L.U.B.A. 1 �L.U.B.A. EXECUTIVES PRESIDENT - Jennifer Milne. The L.U.B.A. president is in charge of the day to day operations and administration of the association. She is the association's chief spokesperson and official representative. VICE-PRESIDENT - Andrew Bird. The Vice-President is the second highest position in the association. He assumes the responsibilities of the President should she be unable to perform her duties in any way. TREASURER - Pinkish Gothi. The Treasurer is responsible for the finances of the association. His duties include preparing an annual budget, monthly financial statements, and records of day to day operations. SECRETARY - Elio Tremonti. The Secretary is responsible for the minutes of the meeting, promotion of L.U.B.A. events, and conduct all offical correspondence for L.U.B.A. VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR - Melanie Kaartinen. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the data base program and finding volunteers for L.U.B.A. events and activities. SOCIAL DIRECTOR - Christine Kolic. Christine is responsible for organizing and promoting all social events and activities. On September 24, after orientation in the upper lecture theatre, the official business initiation will begin. Initiation will not only be an experience you will never forget but it will also be a great way to meet new people and make new friends. BACK TO BUSINESS BASH • SEPTEMBER 24 The Back to Business Bash is the biggest party of the year. This party is sure to get everyone back into the partying mode. This year the party will be held at the ORTONA FROM 8pm TO lam. Every year this party has been a sell out so make sure to get your tickets early. You don't want to miss the GREAT EVENT!! HALLOWEEN HOWL • OCTOBER 29 Have you thought of a costume yet? Halloween is soon approaching and the place to party is L.U.B.A.'s annual Halloween Howl! You are sure to run into some shifty characters, maybe even Elvis. WINE AND CHEESE • LATE NOVEMBER This social event is the last chance you will have to do a little brown nosing before you write your dreaded final exams. The Lakehead University Alumni and faculty will be there to mingle and chat with the students. This is a great opportunity to relax and unwind a little before the serious studying must begin. The bash will be a lot like the first one ...but only BETTER!!! BOWLING • OCTOBER & FEBRUARY Bowling is one of the social highlights of the school year. Last year everyone had a great time laughing and chuckling at some of the inexperienced bowlers. However, those inexperienced bowlers discovered what they had been missing over all these years. BINGO BINGO!!! Yes we have another winner!!! Bingo is a great way to lose so of that frustration that has built up over the last few months here at L.U. and maybe even win a little money. YEAR-END SEMI FORMAL • MARCH 25 The royal event of the year! This formal is the last event of the school year and the whole business school is invited. The night will consist of great food and music. The night is sure to create lasting memories for all business students and send the 93-94 academic year out with a bang! *· 4 D 0 o D D n �l l l l l l 1 I J J J J J J J L.U.B.A. HOUSES Last year was the beginning of a new comradeship amongst the business students here at L. U. Each year level joined together to form a team rather than competing against one another by year level. this new found friendship was the result of the "HOUSE SYSTEM". For those first year students who do not know what the "HOUSE SYSTEM" is, let's take as moment to review. The system is made up of four different houses, RED, GREEN, YELLOW, and BLUE. Each house consists of the same number of first, second, third and forth year students who are enroled in the 93-94 academic year. Each student will be given a coloured sticker for the back of their students card to identify which house he or she belongs to. Each student will generate points by either organizing or participating in L.U.B.A. sponsored events and activities. For Example: Best Bowler Best Team Funniest Team Participation 15 points 10 points 10 points 5 points Every two weeks the total points earned per team will be displayed in the L.U.B.A. showcase. Students are encouraged to volunteer and participate in L.U.B.A. events because there are many rewards and benefits from doing so. There are chances of receiving discounts on event passes or clothing. The top 3 individuals in each house will also be rewarded for their time and effort put in to making our events and activities a success. 5 �HOW TO GET INVOLVED IN YOUR BUSINESS SCHOOL Lakehead University is constantly looking for new and innovative people to join its clubs and participate in organized events. In the business school, L.U.B.A., ACE (Association of Collegiate Entrepreneurs) and AIESEC (International Association of Economic and Commerce) are the clubs to join. We are always looking for volunteers and class reps to help and participate in the many events and activities throughout the year. Not only is participating fun and a great way to meet new people, it also a valuable asset to your resume. Make sure you contact any member of the L.U.B.A. committee and let him or her know that you are available. Your help will not only be appreciated but improve the success of the events. ACADEMIC ADVISING The business school is filled with academic advisors ... your professors. They are always willing to help you choose the correct courses and put you on the right track. Each professor has either open or scheduled office hours. Check with your professor to find the most suitable time for both of you to discuss your academic career. If a professor is not available when you need counselling, your program chair, Jan Thatcher (1 & 2yr) or Richard Glew (3 & 4yr) is available. ADDING OR DROPPING A COURSE Changing one's schedule and work load is a serious matter. You must remember that you can only add or drop courses before certain dead lines. The deadline to add fall half courses and full year courses is September 22. The deadline to drop fall half courses without academic penalty is November 8. For winter half courses, the deadline to add is January 13 and to drop is March 1. The deadline to drop full year courses is February 8. In order to drop or add a course, you must fill out a form which can be picked up at the Registrar's Office. After filling the form out, have your program chair sign the sheet and then summit the form to the Registrar's Office. Calendar supplies each student with a detailed outline of the required courses needed to complete his or her degree. It is the responsibility of each student registering at Lakehead University to be familiar with the specific requirements of the degree, diploma, or certificate which he/she seeks. Each student is responsible for ensuring that the courses in which registration is effected satisfy the program requirements of the degree sought. Advice and counselling for all who need assistance are freely available. For more information regarding either the Honours Bachelor of Commerce Degree or the Bachelor of Administration Degree, please refer to page 113 of the L.U. Calendar. FINAL EXAMINATIONS The final exams schedule is posted on the bulletin boards in the Agora of the University Centre. They are usually posted in late October, early November. If you have a conflict with two or more of your final exams, you must fill out a form and return it to the scheduling office which is located in the University Centre, next to the Registrar's Office. You will then be notified as to when you will write your exams. GRADUATION Students must apply to graduate and obtain their degree. The final date to apply for graduation is February 4, 1994. The applications can be picked up outside the Registrar's Office. There is a $30 application processing fee. Calendar, there is list of all the scholarship and bursaries available to the students of Lakehead University. Last year the university was left with an abundant number of scholarships that were not issued to the students. This was the result of a lack of applicants and interested students. It would be in your best interest to take a look at the scholarships and awards available. You may be able to receive an award that may help pay for your university education. SUPPLEMENTAL EXAMS Students must apply to write a supplemental examination. The applications can be found outside of the Registrar's Office. The deadline to apply for special exams written on January 22,24 is January 10. The deadline for special exams written on July 19, 20, 21 is June 17. There is a fee of $27 per exam which is nonrefundable. The supplemental exam schedule will be posted in the Agora on the bulletin boards. Please refer to page 22 and 112 of the Calender to see if you qualify to write a special exam. :~: · -::.·:-:•.~·-:~ s ' "OK, but only until I find someone better." 9 �WHAT DO I DO IF I MISS AN EXAM OR TEST??? PROBLEM: I slept in! My exam has already started! SOLUTION: Immediately call your professor and let him or her know about the situation. A solution will be found based on the discretion of your professor. PROBLEM: I am not feeling very well. I do no think I will be able to write my exam. 0 0 0 SOLUTION: Call your professor and let him or her know that you are feeling under the weather. The next best move would be to get a note form your family doctor. By obtaining a doctor's note you will be able to prove that you were ill and not trying to get out of his deadly midterm exam. You and your professor must then discuss what course of action must be take next. PROBLEM: I have to work! SOLUTION: You should have booked it off!! Most profs do not have any sympathy for the student who has to go to work rather than show up for their exam. Each professor usually gives his or her students enough warning before each exam or test to allow the students to plan their work schedule around their tests. 0 0 PROBLEM: My car would not start .. .I had a flat tire .. .I was in a car accident... SOLUTION: Bring the situation to your professor's attention immediately rather than waiting until a few days have passed. The longer you wait, the worse the situation will become. Call your professor as soon as you are able to get to a phone. These services are designed to help students achieve a prosperous university career. L.U.B.A. has only provided a short description of each service. As LUBA Faculty Advisor, I understood my role was to advise and to serve as a liaison between LUBA and FBA faculty and administration. After several lengthy discussions with your president, Allan Porter, I became convinced he was sincere about his hopes and plans for LUBA. He invited me to attend LUBA meetings and I agreed to attend. Since then the enthusiasm has been contagious. Because better communication was stressed during elections, we immediately set out to design and administer a survey of the membership before classes were out in March 1994. Council eventually learned a lot from the survey results. LUBA Council began having regular meetings as early as April 1994. It seemed LUBA could predict snowfalls better than the meteorologist. Imagine the uncanny coincidence of three April meetings each the morning after a snow stonn? Whoops! I wasn't supposed to say we get snow in Thunder Bay in April just in case some out-of-town students believe you can swim er- rr fish ... in Lake Superior in April. After having a workshop on how to conduct meetings, we fonnalized our meeting procedures setting agendas, taking minutes, preparing for meetings ahead of time and following up on commitments made by individuals. In hardly any time, I felt comfortable with the group because I believed Allan understood the magnitude of his responsibility as president and that his Council members understood their roles as well. We all set out to work hard.... We talked about LUBA's need to have a mission statement. It became apparent when we discussed what LUBA should or should not do, there was some confusion. Why? Because we had no underlying philosophy to help guide our decision making. Just what is LUBA? Who does it serve? Who else does this? Who could do it better? How could LUBA do it best? After a few sessions, we put together a mission statement. J Q n I J J D n U D We then found that we could envision LUBA's role, that is, what it could and should be doing. However, we were concerned with how things would get done. By whom? When? And assuming 0 LUBA could get everything right this year, how could we plan for continuity in future years? Like any good organization that has a mission and goals in place, an appropriate administrative structure to facilitate the achievement of those goals is needed. While LUBA Council members felt they could 0 study and evaluate LUBA's administrative structure themselves, they feared they would not necessarily remain objective. Worse yet, perhaps the study would never get finished because other priorities would arise. Council therefore felt it would hire someone to carry out this project and to □ help defray costs, applied for and receivedNORTOP funding from the Ministry of Development and Mines. LUBA's has had excellent experience with NORTOP funding. In fact, NORTOP funding g �1 enabled LUBA to launch its first ever Handbook and design its first student database two years ago. This year NORTOP funding not only permitted LUBA to study and redesign its administrative structure, but also become an employer at a time when jobs are scarce for students. I supervised the student who completed the study and was very pleased with her work. We'll be reporting the findings and recommendations to you this Fall. Next Council decided it was time for a LUBA identity. LUBA needed a logo so it contracted graphics work from a FBA alumnus, Scott Sumner. After several iterations, we are proud to say we approved the logo you see on the cover of this Handbook. This is a milestone! Let's stop. Time for some grim reality. Finances. How do you pay for the NORTOP study? The logo? Enter the LUBA Handbook. While the Handbook costs LUBA a considerable amount of money, nearly $1800, it also provides LUBA with a major source of operating funds because advertisers appearing throughout the Handbook pay LUBA. I would have to say without a doubt, the production ofthe Handbook is one of the fargest projects undertaken by LUBA. The Handbook Committee worked endlessly soliciting advertisers and producing the contents of Handbook. While many individuals helped, I feel Allan Porter, Marianna DeAgazio and Chris Enstrom deserve special mention for their dedication and enormous efforts. Congratulations on a job well done. .l } J J J J LJ In addition to the production of the Handbook, LUBA's other major project over the summer was the production ofits first newsletter, an excellent vehicle for communication among LUBA members, alumni and faculty. Again, this would not have been possible if not for the efforts of one individual, Maria DeAgazio. Thank you Maria. That's not all. LUBA attended to a myriad of other details throughout the summer - the Database, Orientation, Tree Planting, Back to Business Bash(es), Bowling Night, Appreciation Night, Graduation Gala, and new events such as Casino Night, Snow Golf and learning workshops. Furthermore, samples of new LUBA clothing had to be ordered. I have found my work with LUBA extremely rewarding. I am pleased to see these students applying classroom theory in their management of a real not-for-profit organization, LUBA. I am hopeful and confident this year will be a great success, something to continue long into the future. In addition, the conflict should be resolved as close to the source of the problem as possible. DI D 01 0 0 o These guidelines are designed to address matters of academic concern. These would include course- { specific issues such as grading, student attendance, marking scheme, grading system, faculty perfonnance, etc. Other university policies and procedures exist to address issues such as student misconduct, harassment, and external academic appeals. PARTY HARDER! �l l l l l l l I I J J J J J J Intercollegiate Business Competition Let me tell you about the Queen's Intercollegiate Business Competition (ICBC). Each year the brightest and best business students from across Canada compete in ICBC. Queen' s ICBC is becoming the Stanley Cup of the Undergraduate Business Schools; a pri:ze enhancing a school's reputation and a fierce pride among students. When ICBC originated in 1979, the aims and objectives were: to provide business and students alike from across Canada, with a forum for the constructive exchange of ideas and to establish relationships which endure in the future years; to challenge and further develop a variety of essential business skills; to increase the visibility of all participating schools within the various communities--business, government and public; to promote, in the eyes of the public, the positive qualities of the business schools and programs; and, to provide an opportunity for social interaction with business students from across Canada. There are two components of ICBC. During the Preliminary Case Round, held in September and October of each year, over 20 universities play-off to qualify for the finals by preparing a written case submission (see below for areas of competition). During the Final Round, held at Queen's in January, the top five teams in each area of competition compete for 1st and 2nd place. However in this round, competitors have 15 minutes to make an oral presentation to a panel of judges made up of leaders of the Canadian business community (after only 5 hours of preparation)! There is also a debating competition introduced in the Final Round - only the top five schools overall are invited to participate in the debating. These students serve on the Committee for one year beginning in February and like most of you, these students have full-time course loads! The Committee has substantial financial support from corporate donors such as the Financial Post and Unilever (to mention a few) and academic support from Queen's faculty who mark the Preliminary Round case submissions. However, notwithstanding this support, the Committee cannot be praised enough for having hosted this highly popular and successful event over the past 16 years! �D Well, how does Lakehead fit into aJI of this? Lakehead has competed in ICBC since its inception in 1979 and has posted excellent results over the years. Last year, our Labour Arbitration team (Jodi Hazuda, HB Commerce '94, and James Lindsay, HB Commerce '94) placed second in the Final Round and in 1993, our Marketing team (Stacey Medwid, HB Commerce '93, and Rhonda Pettigrew, HB Commerce '93) placed first in the Final Round!! In fact, Lakehead has placed in the top five teams overall in three of the past five years during the Preliminary Round (see below). In order to participate, you must be a full-time undergraduate student. NormaJly, the teams are selected in September, however, this year the teams were selected in July 1994 (see the August 1994 issue of LUBA Update for names). The teams are selected by the faculty. After that point, faculty is no longer involved. Faculty cannot in any way assist the students during the competition - students are entirely on their own. My role as ICBC Coordinator is to liaise with the Queen's ICBC Committee and Lakehead's teams. give our students materiaJs from Queen's during the course of the competition and ensure that all submissions are mailed on time. Furthermore, I deaJ with media, make all travel arrangements and manage our budget. This leads me to finances. As you can well imagine, our team's travel costs to Kingston can be substantiaJ placing considerable strain on operating funds available to the Faculty of Business Administration at a time when university funding is declining. Each year the University tries its best to come up with funds to pay for this travel. Two years ago we were able to secure a business sponsor for our team. The chartered accounting finn of KPMG Peat Marwick Thorne established an ICBC endowment fund (eventually self-supporting) to which it contributes annually. Over the summer, Peat Marwick Thorne also paid for a beautiful new plaque that honours all of Lakehead's Final Round participants over the years. The plaque is on display in the computer lab. Please make a point of reading the plaque - you'll be sure to recognize the names of students (even faculty and recruiters) who have participated! I would like to thank everyone who makes ICBC possible at Lakehead: the faculty at large and faculty liaison for their assistance during the course of the competition; KPMG Peat Marwick Thorne for their generous financial sponsorship, and especially, the team members for their participation. I cannot stress enough how grateful we should all be to those students for their representing the Faculty of Business Administration because ICBC requires a considerable personal time commitment from each of them. It is also recommended that you find a fellow student to photocopy handouts from, rather than inconvenience your professor for them. In addition, be sure to catch up on all the readings and assignments before the next class. Academic Advising The Faculty of Business is filled with academic advisors...your professors. They are ready and willing to help you choose the correct courses and put you on the right track. Each professor has either open or scheduled office hours as well as his or her own E-mail account. Make an appointment either in person, by phone, or through electronic mail with your professor to discuss your academic career. If a professor is not available, when you need counselling, contact your program chair, Professor Archibald (first and second year) or Professor Glew (third and fourth year) for academic advising. Adding/Dropping Courses Changing your schedule and work load is a serious matter. You must remember there are deadlines for adding or dropping courses. Do not talk when others are talking, do not excuse yourself from class needlessly (to get snacks or roam the halls), and if you are having a snack do so inconspicuously. Above all, remember that respect for your professors and classmates is the key to a rewarding and enjoyable year at university. Study Habits One of the greatest assets you can have in university is good study habits. They can be acquired or improved upon through workshops, peer study groups, and advice from professors.
