551H CONVOCATION CELEBRATION!
Convocation is a traditional ceremony during which the University
officially grants the degrees and diplomas earned by its students.
The word "convocation" means "calling together." It is a
ceremonial meeting of the entire University community.
Academic Regalia
On Convocation Day, University members and their guests wear
special attire based on a tradition that dates back as long as
seven centuries ago. The academic costume, also referred to as
academic "dress" or "regalia," had its origins in the medieval
European universities. The regalia were devised to distinguish
academic persons as doctors, licentiates, masters, and bachelors.
There are many variations of academic dress. The hood,
gown, and in some cases the special hat worn by an
individual are determined by the style of the university where
he or she receives a degree. The colourful gowns and hoods of
the universities from across Canada, the United States, the
United Kingdom , and several other nations of the world
are worn at Lakehead University today.
The academic dress chosen by Lakehead University 1s fashioned
after that of the University of Oxford, the oldest English-speaking
university in the world. The robes worn by the officers of the
University- the Chancellor, who presides at convocation, the President
and Vice-Chancellor and the Chair of the Board of Governors -

are all of the Oxford cut and trim. Each has its own distinctive
colour. The colourful gowns worn by the individuals who are
receiving honorary degrees are of the same design as are the
black gowns worn by the student candidates.
The ritual at convocation reflects the medieval custom that
anyone in a university could wear a gown, but a hood was the
symbol of a degree. Students who have met the University's
academic requirements (three, four, five, six or seven years of
study in particular subjects) wear the symbol of their status
as holders of a Lakehead University degree. Lakehead University's
bachelor's and master's degree hoods are distinguished by a
one or two inch colour border which indicates the degree acquired
(i.e. white for Arts, gold for Science, blue for Education,
burgundy for Nursi ng, etc).

The Mace
During the processional and the recessional, the Marshal for
convocation carries the Mace, a silver wand which is a traditional
symbol of the University's authority. This mace was given to
the University by the Alumni Assoc1at1on in 1971. It bears
the University's motto "Ad augusta per angusta", Achievement
through effort.

Doctor of Laws
FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2019 • 2PM CEREMONY
The University confers "honorary" degrees
which symbolize the highest honour that can
be conferred upon an individual by the University. An honorary degree may be awarded
in recognition of scholarly or creative
achievements or distinguished public service
to the country or region. They are awarded
to individuals who have been designated by
the University's Senate, its senior academic
governing body a deserving special honour.
At Convocation, the degree is awarded
honoris causa, or "for the sake of honour". A
hood is also given to the recipient and it may
be worn to any academic affair. Recipients
of these degrees become honorary alumni of
the University and they may affix, after their
names, the abbreviation of the degree.

This year, Lakehead University
is proud to honour the following
exceptional individuals:

In 1977, at the age of 17, Gwen O'Reilly was accepted
into the HBSc Forestry program at Lakehead University,
one of about five women in a class of over 100. A
graduate program in Forest Genetics and Ecology and a
six-year stint as a Forestry Research Associate followed.
Fieldwork confirmed her love of the Borea1 Forest.
Forestry confirmed her understanding of sexism and
homophobia.
On campus, Gwen joined other feminists to start the
first women's centre at Lakehead, before the dawn of
Women's Studies or sexual harassment legislation. She
launched her public education career doing workshops
on homophobia. The events following the murder of
14 women students at !.'.Ecole Polytechnique in 1989
shaped her understanding of gendered violence and
the cost of speaking truth to power. This also led to her
focus on the institutional response to violence against
women and the impacts of systemic racism and sexism.
Her work at the Northwestern Ontario Women's Centre
continues to emphasize access to justice for all women.
Gwen's interest in ecology has fuelled her enthusiasm
for farming and sustainable living. Since 1987, she has
been growing her own food, saving seeds and working in
the local food security movement. She has administered
the Thunder Bay Good Food Box Program since 2005.
After 30 years at a community-based Women's Centre,
women have entrusted her with thousands of personal
stories of injustice - but also of courage, perseverance,
acceptance and love. Their fierce determination to live
well continues to inspire Gwen's work.

Moira McPherson, PhD

CONGRATULATIONS
on your graduation!

Sustainable Development Goals. These interdependent goals address global
challenges facing the world, including poverty, inequality, climate change,
environmental degradation, peace and justice, and reflect the grand global
challenges Lakehead University focuses on through its teaching, research and
partnerships.
You, our newest class of university graduates, are even more well-prepared to
lead the lasting transformation our world needs now.

I was so hoping we would be able to share the celebration of
your accomplishments with you, your family and friends, and
with your Lakehead family on our campuses.
While the pandemic has limited our ability to come together in person, it has
not limited the significance of your exceptional achievements, and the promise
of future successes that come from learning and living these past years as a
Lakehead University student.

While experiencing the tumult of this pandemic, we have become profoundly
aware of how well we have adapted to learning from one another, to sharing
resources and expertise, and to seeing ourselves as members of communities
collaborating for the betterment of our shared social, economic, and physical
well-being.

We are especially proud of how well you have adapted to the challenges we
have all faced this past year, and how you have demonstrated your resilience
and spirit, and ownership of your learning goals.

We hope you have become more confident in how to use a wider range of
technologies to help ensure you connect and thrive in your chosen careers or
professions, even when neighbourhoods or hemispheres apart. Using virtual
tools, you are able to create and interact with new levels of effectiveness and
personal connection that truly cement long-term relationships and shared
commitment.

Our world and plans are now are so different from those that were in place
when you entered Lakehead University. However, our strategic priorities and
specific hopes for you are still strong and fitting today.

This is a time of deep change. As both a graduate of Lakehead University
and a global citizen, are poised to create a better future for yourself, for the
communities you will choose to impact, and for our world.

Lakehead's mission to be an innovative comprehensive university that provides
an education that is about how to think deeply has never been more relevant.
We have always strived to be strong members of national and international
knowledge creation communities that share and collaborate for the greater
good.

Keep us in your hearts and in your minds as you, our exceptional 2021
graduates, make our future together brighter. We look forward to learning about
all of your successes!

For the second year in a row, Lakehead University has been recognized
as one of the top 100 Universities around the world in the Times Higher
Education (THE) Impact Rankings. THE Impact Rankings are the only global
performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations'

Best because you and your support team have gotten across a very
important finish line.
Best because you have a chosen or birth Family, Friends, other
supports to hug or elbow bump in-person and say thank you.
Best because so much is possible in-person that was not a year ago,
including your Convocation class of 2023.
It is the worst of times because when we could come out from our
lock-downs, and zoom rooms, and take off our masks, we discovered
that there were challenges still there that cannot be ignored. Just like
debris under the snow.
Worst is climate change.
Worst is our health care system, our universal system, the treatment
of elders.

Go forth and be the Best.
