Alloi is a 1 9 year old 1st , year BPE student who hails from Sault Ste. Marie. Rick was aware of Lakehead from former Sooites attending here, but he had several other universities in mind and "knew little about LU academically", until he met and talked to Director Dr. Norman LaVoie last spring. Dr. LaVoie was one of several staff members visiting Sault Ste. Marie in order to expose other cities (and their prospective university students) to life and studies at Lakehead University and Thunder Bay. With follow-up contact being made by LU Varsity Wrestling Coach Bob Thayer we see one of Canada's finest young wrestling hopefuls on campus. Rick stands a short, stocky 5'10" tall and weighs in at a tough 228 lbs. He will wrestle in the 100 kilo (220) class so he has some shaving of poundage ahead of him. If credentials mean anything, Rick is among the elite with four years of varsity football at Korah Collegiate, 5 years 'of wrestling high school sr. heavyweight (since he was 15 years old), 4 Soo City championships, 4 NOSSA crowns capped off by his All Ontario Sr. Heavyweight Championship last year and becoming the reigning All Canadian Jr. Heavyweight Champion. Rick was seen last spring at LU while competing in the Canadian Sr. Wrestling Championships, being pinned twice - once by Thunder Bay's own Canadian Super Heavyweight Champion Wyatt Wishart. Alloi was then off to the Junior World Championships where he lost twice, to the World's #1 and 2 champs. from the US and East Germany. Rick's goals include super conditioning, improving his personal strength, quickness and most of all, mastering his technique under · his new coach's tutelage. "I haven't had a coach in 3 years and Mr. Thayer is one of the best. I'm looking forward to maturing under his guidance. I want to be ready for the 1980 Olympic trials and a shot at Wishart, but I really feel 1984 will be where I'll peak and I hope to have a surprise for the American and East German by then." You will probably be hit with terms like 'the Claw·, 'flying leg scissors'·or 'a drive into the turnbuckles'. Names that will come up in conversation may be the Crusher, Mad Dog Vachon or the Super Destroyer. Ask Bob Thayer about wrestling and you won't get the same reply. Thayer is the coach oftheLakeheadWrestling Club that is comprised of both LU students and Thunder Bay city residents. When he talks wrestling it's a three round event without ropes, foreign objects or characters like The Crusher. Thayer's more likely to mention people like Dan Gable, Sean Barry or Gord Garvie. This week Thayer's talking about the Lakehead Fall Open, a five team event that runs this Saturday at the Sanders Fieldhouse. Pitted against the LU NorWesters will be teams from Michigan Tech, the universities of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Regina and Calgary. GPAC-CAN WEST merge Under Thayer and his predecessor, Garvie, the Nor' Wasters have had a permanent headlock on the Great Plains Conference. This year things may change. GPAC tournament• sports, like wrestling and swimming, will hold their championships in conjunction with Canada West conference schools. The presence of the western schools at this weekend's event will only serve as a very early preview for next February's finals. Calgary will send three competitors, two of national calibre. Leading the Dinosaurs will be Ron-Moncur, the 1978-79 CIAU champion at 118 lbs. and a member of Canada's national team. He will be joined by the nation.al 'B' team's CIAU silver medalist, 177 lb. Bob Ecklund. Alberta, under coach John Barry, is going after its thfrd straight Can West title and he sees t.his country west of Wawa this year as a race between his school and Thayer's. Three of Barry's grapplers were very successful last year. Pierre Pomerleau is the defending CIAU champ at 158 lbs. while Glenn Perch was the runner-up at 126 lbs. Bryan Last weekend Lakehead University was the site of a dual meet between Lake Superior State and Lakehead. The Lake Superior State team was led by two AllAmericans in Ted Yachanin at 126 lb. and NAIA finalist, Steve Bryan. Over the past several years, Lake Superior State has been one of the top teams in NAIA and NCAA division II competition. In the opening match, Lakehead's Pete Fournier defeated Bill Brey by a score of 6-3. Fournier, a freshman, utilizing a single leg attack totally dominated his opponent. At 126 lb. Mark Jodoin wrestled All-American, Yachanin to a 12-4 loss. However, Coach Thayer feels that Jodoin did an excellent job against this very tough oppo• nent from Lake Superior State. At 134 lb. Lakehead's Joe Picton surprised ~veryone by performing a front suplay and pinning his opponent. In the 142 lb. class. Sean Barry wrestled Lake Superior State's Steve Bryan, a two-time All-American and the match was an excellent one with the score 2-2 at the end of one period. However, a head clash resulted in five stitches to the eye of Steve Bryan and a for-. feit of the match. The success enjoyed by Lakehead in the early matches came to an end as Chris Foote, Larry Moro and Mike Warbanski all went down to defeat at the hands of their tougher Lake Superior State opponents. However, Louis Kok reversed the trend by defeating his much heavier -opponent, Mike Hufnagel by a score of 12-8. The final match of the :vening was then won by freshman Frank Schaller :>Ver Kevin Friddle by a ;uperior score of 27-0. The final team score was _akehead University 30, _ake Superior State 21. Tonight at 7:30 p.m., Lakehead will host last year's CIAU champions, the University of Western Ontario. In the past, Western has featured many of the outstanding wrestlers in the country with such names as Clive Llewellyn and Egon Beiler. They have had representatives on Pan Am, Olympic and Com• monwealth Games teams over the past ten years. This week's line up will feature three outstanding Western wrestlers. Leading the group is Ray Takahashi who represented Canada at the Olympics in Montreal in 1976. As well, Takahashi competed for Canada in the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, winning a gold medal, a performance that earned him the oustanding wrestler of the year award. At the present time, Takahashi is a member of Canada's National Team. The team will also feature Thunder Bay's Lloyd Renken, a former Lakeview High School wrestler. Renken is now a member of Canada's National Team. Lloyd will be one of the prime candidates for the Olympic Team in the 149.5 lb. class. The third member of the group is Dave Gordon. Gordon represented Canada in the recent Pan American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As well, Gordon is a member of Canada's National Team in the 114 lb. class. March 9, 1979 Wrestlers take six golds at the CIAUs The Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union's wrestling championships were held at the University of Guelp h last weekend and wrestlers from Lakehead University did extremely well, capturing six medals. The CIAU's attracted I wrestlers from all across the country, including 11 nationally carded athletes, and the result was excellent, tough competition. tn the 120 lb. class, Mark Jodoin had a real battle as there were four carded athletes in his weight division. Jodoin won his first match against Ontario carded Jim Stitt by a pin. In the second match Jodoin lost to nationally carded GeorgeGunoskythen came up with an outstanding performance and defeated Tate 14-5. Jodoin won another match before losing to Andy Longpre, the eventual gold medalist. Dale Adams, at 126, did not win a medal. However, he did an excellent job in the tournament and only the point system prevented him from a medal. In his first match he defeated George Apostolou, a carded athlete 9-4. Adams then lost a close match to nationally carded Ray Takahashi. He went on to win two more matches before losing to Glynn Perch of University of Alberta. Under the draw system instead of finishing in third place he finished fourth. Lakehead team captain Nick Cipriano, at 142, finished with a bronze in spite of a tie match with gold medalist John Park. At 150, freshman Henry Lianga won a silver medal by easily beating four other opponents in his division. His Randy Budner ... four wins only loss was to Thunder Bay native Lloyd Renken. Renken downed Lianga by an eightpoint margin in the finals. Randy Budner, at 167. wrestled his way to a silver medal by beating four opponents. The most notable win for Budner was over John Hemdige of the University of Saskatchewan, a former national junior champion. However, Budner lost a hard fought match to John Dwyer of Western, a member of Canada's National team. In the 190 divisions, Derek Ginter won a bronze medal. Ginter got off to a good start by defeating Serebrin of the University of Western. Ginter lacked the experience to challenge Richard 0eschateletes of Guelph, a national team member. who pinned Ginter in the first period. Phil Colver in the 158 division. lost two close matches and ended up with the bronze. Colyer had an extremely tough match ogain:;t Jame Bethune of Guelph. Wrestlers second set for Guelph Argus - 25 January, 1980 This past weekend some 300 wrestlers from all across the country converged on the campus of the University of Guelph for the Guelph Open Wrestling Tournament. The meet was extremely tough due to it being an Olympic year. The net effect was to have the majority of Canada's National Team present. There were over 20 teams competing in the one-day event. The LU team was led by Sean Barry, who won the only gold for Lakehead. Barry had a total of six matches on the day and decisively defeated all six opponents. His toughest match in the tournament came, as one would expect. in the finals where he out-pointed Andy Longpre of Guelph by a score of 6-0. The only silver medal won by a Lakehead wrestler was captured by Steve Daniar. Steve dropped a weight division by wrestling at 190 lb. instead of 220. The weight loss appeared to have no ill effects on the experienced Daniar as he easily defeated all of his opponents prior to the finals. However, in the finals he met a very determined Doug Cox. who demonstrated his quickness in out-pointing Daniar in a close match. Unfortunately for Daniar, he injured a knee in the match. it was this type of injury which prevented Daniar from representing Canada at the World Championships in San Diego. Two bronze medals were won by Lakehead wrestlers who unfortunately should have captured the silver medal. Unfortunately, the way the tournament was drawn up, resulted in Dale Adams defeating the silver medalist but only taking home the bronze. The silver DALE ADAMS ....... bronze medal medalist, Scott Tate of the U. of Alberta lost two matches whereas Adams lost only one match to National Champion Ray Takahashi. Louis Kok suffered a similar fate as he only lost to Olympic Team member, Clive Llewellyn by a score of 5-2. Finishing in 4th place for Lakehead were Henry Lianga and Joe Picton. Lianga lost a very close match to former National Team member Leo Reyns. Picton, however. was decisively beaten by Glenn Sikura of Guelph in the semifinals. Sikura represented Canada at the Jr. World Championships in Mongolia. Two young members of the Lakehead squad that turned in outstanding performances were Larry Moro and Mike Warbanski. Both competed in the toughest weight division, the 158 lb. class. Both finished in the top eight with 26 competitors in the weight division. Due to the nature of the tournament, team standings were not kept. An Im• pressive list of returning veterans include may of Canada's top grapplers. Heading the list Is Thunder Bay native Steve Daniar, a recent gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games in Ed• monton. Danlar Is a senior Canadian champion and he'll compete this year In the I911pound division. A very exciting wrestler returning to Lakehead Is Sean Barry. This past August Barry competed In the World cham• plonships at Mexico City where he finished a highly respectable seventh. Also returning for another year Is Clark Davis. He's also a senior National champion and will compete In the 180-pound division this winter. In that same weight class will be Dan Muckle, a senior who looks Impressive this year. Muckle has been working very hard through the summer and that's Improved his per• formance considerably. A potential National champ, Phil Colyer, has recovered from a bad Injury to his ankle and has looked very strong In practice. Colyer Is a graduate of Thunder Bay's Lakeview High School where he was coached by Reino Niemi. He's a graduate student at Lakehead. Another graduate student who will be competing for Lakehead for the final season is the 1977-78 team captain Nick Cipriano. Nick was a Canadian senior champ last season and hopes to repeat that feat. In the past Lakehead has been In the Great Plains Athletic Conference but that's Involved just two schools, LU and Regina, and the result has been a foregone conclusion. The governing powers saw fit this year to include LU In the Canada West University Athletic Association meet. Therefore Nor'Westers took the challenge and went to Edmonton to battle the best the west could throw ' at them. That proved plenty good enough as they defeated all four CWUAA teams Involved as well as Regina. Alberta finished H, UBC, Calgary and Saskatchewan all 2-3 and Regina 0-.5. The tourney was a two-day affair that was a series or dual meets between the six schools. Lakehead raced Saskatchewan first and from the outset It was clear Lakehead had total domination In mind' That Is what It turned out lo be as LU won by an overwhelming 53-J point total. Round :? saw Lakehead go against British Columbia and, after some long; hard battles, Lakehead was again victorious, taking nine of 12 matches and outscoring their opponents -10-15. One o( the highlights of this round was JOE PICTON ... not scored on LU's Henry Lianga against UBC's Peter Farcus, a former CIAU champion. It appeared this would be a long and close match but Llanga suffered a re-Injury to his knee which forced him out of the competition. In round J Lakehead met Calgary, determined to keep their victory skein going. This desire paid o(f as they won 10 of 12 possible victories. The event, hosted by the University of Saskachewan, saw a 10-member Lakehead squad return to Thunder Bay with 7 medals (1 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze). The Nor'Westers were proclaimed university champions and they led the way for a combined Great Plains Canada West squad to claim the team crown. The combined GPAC-CWUAA team finished with 39 points and that was enough to dethrone the defending champion Ontario University Athletic Association who finished one pointbehind with 38. As well as Lakehead's seven medals, four Thunder Bay high school graduates, who are now attending universities in other parts of Canada, claimed gold medals. The Nor'Westers' Randy Budner won a gold at 72 kg. Brian Renken, attending the University of Ottawa at 80 kilos. his brother Lloyd Renken of the University of Western Ontario at 68 kilos, Steve Daniar of McGill University at 86 kilos, and heavyweight Wyatt Wishart of Concordia University all won gold medals and did Thunder Bay proud. Silver medalists for Lakehead were Mark Jodoin at 54 kg. Dale Adams at 57 kg, Rick Alloi at 100 kg and heavyweight Andy Jackson. The Nor'Wester bronze medalists were Joe Picton at 61 kg and Larry Moro at 68 kg. Another Thunder Bay high school graduate, Ed Slabikowski of the University of Guelph also won a bronze. Missing out on the medals from the Lakehead squad were Henry Lianga at 65 kg, and Frank Schaller at 80 kg. Both finished 4th in their respective weight classes and turned in credible performances. Mike Warbanski had it the roughest of all the Nor' Wester grapplers as he finished 6th in the tough 86 kilo ctass. Randy Budner CIAU gold medal Budner won all of his matches en route to the gold medal with his toughest battle being a 6-4 decision over silver medalist Jamie Bethune of the University of Guelph in the final. Budner·s other 3 wins were all by superior scores. Wishart beat the 'Westers ' Andy Jackson in his opening match and coasted to the gold. Jackson rebounded with 3 straight pins before dropping a 6-5 final match decision to Gavin Carrow of the University of Guelph. But by then Andy had locked up the silver medal behind Wishart, who repeated as the CIAU heavyweight champ. Lakehead's Dale Adams gave a good run for the gold. He won a decision. lost a close 4-2 match to gold.medalist Ray Takahashi of the University of Western Ontario and finished with two more easy wins. Rick Alloi and Mark Jodoin both gave fine performances outside of their matches against the eventual gold med:.lists. Jodoin won three straight, dropped a 16-7 decision to 54-kilo winner Scott Tate of the University of Alberta and then closed with a victory. Alloi won 2 matches and then was drubbed 13-1 by 100-kilo winner Wayne Brightwell of the University of Guelph. Two more wins after that gave Alloi the silver. Both wrestlers are seniors at Lakehead and in physical education. Mark Jodoin is a native of Rainy River. Ontario and wrestled for Rainy River High School under Jim Martindale. Last season Jodoin was the Canada-West-G.P.A.C. champion and finished second in the C.I.A.U.'s. As well, earlier this season Jodoin defeated Guelph's Andy Longpre, a former C.I.A.U. champion. Jodoin is one of the hardest working members of the LU. squad. . The other captain, Dale Adams, is a native of Toronto. Adams finished second in the C.I.A.U.'s and second in the Olympic trials in London last spring. Like Jodoin, he is an extremely dedicated athlete. Coach Thayer feels that the choice of team captains is an excellent one in that both athletes have the · competitive background and dedication to the sport to lead the L.U. Nor'westers. This weekend members of MARK JODOIN DALE ADAMS the LU Wrestling team will travel to the University of Regina for their annual invitational wrestling tournament. The tournament is an excellent one with virtually all members of the GPAC and Canada West participating. Participating teams include U. of Alberta, U of Calgary, U. of Saskatchewan, Regina, and Minot State of North Dakota. The tournament will provide coach Bob Thayer with an excellent.opportunity to get a good look at John Barry's U of Alberta squad. The University of Alberta finished second in the Canada West-GPAC championship and 3rd as a team in the CIAU's. As well, they have several outstanding wrestlers returning. This will be the first com-petition of the new year for the NorWesters.
